This is why everyone hates recurring billing! (and why sellers frequently complain about eBay technical issues). Today, an eBay moderator confirmed eBay overcharged some sellers this week and said the company is working to identify listings that were impacted.
"Some Good Til Cancelled listings which renewed early in July (July 1 & July 2 as an example) were charged a 2nd insertion fee after 30 days passed instead of renewing the following month as they should have.
"The appropriate teams are aware of the issue, have identified the cause and corrected it. Additionally they are currently working to identify and credit listings that were double charged incorrectly in July.
"Moving forward this will not occur as we finalize the transition from 30 day renewals to monthly renewals. Thanks!"
There's something about the wording of that statement that doesn't inspire confidence that eBay will be successful in crediting all accounts that were overbilled - "working to identify"; if eBay can't identify those listings, what does that say?
Remarkably, eBay never announced this over-billing incident - we happened to stumble upon the post in the discussion boards. eBay's System Announcement board continues to show an all-clear in "Billing," and there's nothing at all about the overcharges on the Seller Announcement board.
Skeptics who've been around the block might also ask, what are the chances the same problem will occur in exactly one month?
Some sellers had already reported that eBay had caused them to overpay because of a "fix" it rolled out this month due to a botched implementation. (eBay failed to anticipate that a 30-day auto-renewal period would not sync with monthly billing cycles and would therefore result in sellers paying listing fees twice in a month for some months.) You can read about those sellers' reports of over-billing in this July 22nd EcommerceBytes blog post
Incidents like GTC renewal glitches (and the failure to announce them) certainly don't help with eBay's credibility, especially as it rolls out managed payments, far more complex than the transition to Good Til Cancelled.
Update 8/6/19: Marking this thread on the eBay boards to watch. Glitch impacted sellers in 2 ways - Stores have limited # of free listings. Will eBay issue credits for all the ways sellers were overcharged...?
