Any Advice for Returning eBay Executive?

Former head of Seller Experience Jordan Sweetnam is returning to eBay as Senior Vice President and General Manager, Americas Market, which encompasses the US, Canada, and Latin America.

Sweetnam spent 12 years at eBay before leaving in 2016 to take a job at Walmart Ecommerce, which underwent a shakeup last month.

He will report to Jay Lee, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Markets. eBay's announcement didn't address how Sweetnam's role differs from that of Jay Hanson, who is Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of eBay Americas.

Lee said in the announcement, "Jordan's incredible experience and energy will be a huge asset in this critical leadership role and we are thrilled to welcome him back to eBay to lead our Americas business. He has long-standing relationships with many of eBay's seller community, is an avid customer, and will bring an invaluable perspective to the Markets leadership team."

Sweetnam will start work in San Jose on July 15.

Do you think Sweetnam will recognize eBay after his 3-year absence? Do you have any advice for the returning executive?

@TheEnd ... UGH!

Kick eBay's new Managed Payments to the curb and let us have PayPal again! Or let us accept whatever forms of payment we want to accept. Don't try to micromanage the sellers.

No offense man, but as George Carlin said "Soft names make soft people". Hiring someone back under these odd circumstances mean he's there to be a punching bag and a front bumper, probably there to absorb blame, and deflect punishment and blame away from those higher than him in the "management" team.  He's certainly not going to implement anything or do anything of import.  He'll be gone again before 400 days pass.  You saw it here first.  Anytime you add modifiers like "Senior" to the job title of "vice president", and your title has a comma in it?  EXPENDABLE.  They are going to find out he learned nothing during his "secret" espionage mission at walmart, and cut him loose again so Devin can have another 100K in stock options back.

1. Rehiring a former employee or executive is never something to be taken lightly, especially given the public criticism Elliott gave Wenig and eBay for its leadership turnover.

2. Related, what is with the constant churn of those with the title (or immediate orbit) of eBay’s “VP Seller Experience”?

3. Last November, when eBay announced Wenig’s former Thomson Reuters drinking buddy Harry Temkin was being brought in as VP Seller Experience, we wondered if Bob Kupbens would soon be “having drinks with RJ Pittman” (who was released in one of the eBay layoff rounds last year).

A couple months later, sure enough Kupbens was gone.

4. As pointed out in the blog, what does this mean for Jay Hanson? At best it’s another confusing mish-mash of roles and responsibilities (both internally and externally), and at worst Hanson's life expectancy at eBay is about the same as Kupbens’ was (and largely agree with death’s thoughts above).

5.   Further indication of eBay's ongoing exec org span-of-control specific to the eBay's core marketplace. Hopefully yet this year we may hear good news that eBay may sell or spin-off StubHub and Classifieds units.

I wonder about Walmart.com's supposed losses.  A very common situation for me as a toy collector is for Walmart's shelves to be barren for months on end. Then, at certain points in the year, I can go online and stock up on toys at below what I'd be charged at wholesale.  In other words, I'd be happy to pay $20 in person but I'm only allowed to pay $8-$12 online with free shipping.

I can get the same sort of deals on Amazon but they don't have physical stores to chronically neglect so it's a little different.

rescind the single WORST decision in my 21 years selling on eBay. "Good Til Cancelled" - nothing but a greed driven money grab that costs me sales and money each month. I now have to cancel on day 29 (if I remember) and loose that last day sales which was always one of the best. And I now realize the listings renew before the full 30 days. I went to cancel a dozen a few days ago and all had been renewed (with fees) showing 30 days 3 hours!

...which executive return to ebay?

None. It's time for a drastic change in ebay's business model and it's very core which has been rotten since 2008. It's reputation is an International embarrassment.

This company needs a complete makover from top to bottom. An exorcism to expel a decade of abuses, extortion, Chinese junk, counterfeits, scams, money grabs, glitches and a dis-loyal contempt towards it's customers that is unprecedented in the history of commerce.

It's going to take a guy like John Legere, current CEO of T Mobile to turn things around. Google him.

Advice?  To eBay?  The entity that describes anything resembling such to be mere ''noise''?  Perhaps he remembers.

Ok, sure, how about this: HEED the advice that has ALREADY been given by folks logarithmically more experienced that YOU in eCommerce.  Ya got a bit over a decade's worth stored up in your archives by now.  You can spend the time until your 'family' needs your undivided attention (again) reviewing it.

FVF on shipping will end when:

eBay takes control of your sales and you just become a fulfiller of merhandise for eBay.

You'll list the item, eBay will sell it and send you the seller a label to ship the item.

The return address will say eBay Inc.

eBay will have complete control on how much to charge a buyer for shipping.

The day is coming that buyers will no longer know who the seller is, because the seller will be EBAY!

Sweetbutt couldn't handle the cutthroat corporate culture over there at Walmart, so he is back sitting at the new Ebay bar with his buddy Brian Burke, and his other cohorts. No doubt they will be sitting there "brainstorming" new ways to screw over their customers..... the SELLERS on the site.

Pace - Walmart is NEVER going to allow used goods on their site. Get over it - why sell used junk when they already have the hookup to keep pumping billions of dollars worth of cheap chinese crap thru the system? Never going to happen - If antiques and collectibles are going to stand any kind of chance on the internet it will be thru ebay or someone else with a boatload of money that wants to compete with ebay

... shouldnt eBay be concerned with "trimming the fat" instead of hiring more know nothings?

There are SO MANY things that eBay needs to fix, why hire (rehire) some yoyo from before? Makes NO sense.

It seems that its more of the "good ole' boy culture" over at eBay. You hire your buddies at some tremendous salary, give them a BS title, all the perks anyone could ever want - and tell CNBC/Seeking Alpha etc golden tales of how this guy is going to revolutionize "the business" - then you go off and use the TOS to steal money from sellers.

just wow

As it is most eBay honchos do nothing all day - theres ZERO innovation, theres ZERO growth - so what do people like GRIFF do all day ?

Will never happen. The 1996 Communications Decency Act protects sites like ebay and Amazon from responsibility from dangerous and counterfeit products sold by 3rd party sellers.

Although that was recently challenged. A federal appeals court ruled that Amazon can be sued over a defective retractable dog leash sold by one of its third-party vendors to a woman who suffered blindness from it.

The appeals court also said "the Communications Decency Act doesn’t shield Amazon from liability because Amazon “plays a large role in the actual sales process” and isn’t merely a publisher of information or content provided by third parties."

I hope she wins and this sets a precedent that ebay and Amazon need to clean up their highly profitable unregulated dangerous products and Chinese counterfeit market. They reap all the profits from this but are not held accountable for anything. This is literally the definition of a criminal organization, i.e. Racketeering.

The last think ebay wants to do is become the seller of record.
