Shocker: eBay Adds Unique Order Numbers

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is pretty quirky in lots of ways - after all, it started as a person-to-person online auction site in 1995. Nevertheless, it's baffling why in all this time, eBay has never assigned unique numbers to individual orders.

Last year, a seller expressed his incredulity in a letter to EcommerceBytes: "Why does eBay not provide order numbers? This is something so basic, yet it does not exist. The item number is shown, but that same number is for all sales of that item. There is a PayPal transaction ID, but that is not from eBay.

"The only number that is unique to a sale is the record number, but it's not a real order #, it's not unique. They don't even provide it to the buyer."

The letter generated some discussion, with sellers sharing their strategies for working around the deficiency.

This year as part of the Spring Seller Update, eBay announced it would begin assigning unique numbers to orders this summer - though it was easy to overlook among all of the other changes announced.

It would be nice to think eBay made the decision in response to sellers' requests (especially since eBay executives demand sellers offer retail-standard policies in their listings). But the more likely reason is eBay's rollout of managed payments. Sellers somehow made do for two decades, but it's hard to imagine eBay's payments partner Adyen would operate without unique transaction identifiers.

In its April announcement, eBay said: "The updated order numbers will appear in the "order details" section of your View Order Details page, Seller Hub, reports, emails, APIs, post-transaction records, and other locations over time, so you can efficiently track and manage your orders."

seller reported seeing the new numbers on his orders on Sunday - we're not sure if eBay will first test the new numbers among a sample of users, gradually roll them out, or introduce the new practice all at once.

Let us know if you're seeing them yet, and share your thoughts on how they're working out - do they make your life easier?

I have 1 on the 14th and 2 on the 15th, order numbers, 09-03481-38681, 19-03479-61213 & 23-03478-22792

Today I sold 2 items and they have "sales record" number, 30498 & 30499

So now we have an item number and or a sales record or a order number.

And has anyone downloaded a report?

It has every single tidbit of info for a transaction, kind of cool to say the least. Addresses, phone numbers, item sale price, shipping cost, tax collect by sellers, tax collected by ebay.

It's so much info it might be sellable. . . . .

Id rather they focus on their search engine. Search results are now coming up that have nothing to do with what I search for and contain none of the words. Also some things with exact words are not showing up in search at all.

And yes this is even after I click the "view all results" BS.

The last few weeks it has been worse than ever. Ebay has done something to search.

Don't see order number yet on two sales Sunday.  Since my items are mostly unique with quantity number, I've never had an issue using the eBay item number.

I had those order numbers showing last September as a buyer.  One of them was 110000227881444  No hyphens, just a bunch of numbers.  And it is not tied to ANYTHING.

It did not show up on my Order Details, not in my PayPal payment record online, not in My Purchases, not on my PayPal email receipt, not even on the email order confirmation from eBay.  It just shows up on the screen at the end of Checkout, and like a ghost, it's gone.  If I wanted to find it now, there's nowhere left to look.  Maybe eBay is just doing it to test their systems, that they can get an order number to appear.  They would want that later on in the process.

It is a good change.  One I've never really had a big issue with but for some sellers I can see that this makes things easier for them.

Now hopefully they will move on to more important things like the search engine as it is beyond screwy right now.  It is an enormous mess that needs some serious attention.

Haven't looked and really don't. Sales have dropped into the gutter the past 2 months, unique order numbers should be the last thing ebay is worried about.

Gee -  a monumental change, and of such importance to the small amount of items I sell through their limited search engine.
Just one more step toward a wannabeamazon.com

To be fair.  This in the past has been a very big issue for some sellers.  I agree with Ina, it is odd that it has taken all these years for them to address this issue.  But it is important to understand that for some sellers this is a wonderful thing and makes their life much easier.

eBay didn't previously issue order numbers because it wasn't eBay's 'order' to fulfill.  It's surprising that so many sellers apparently have been clamoring for yet another disconnection (and increased glitch potential) from control of what should be built into their own operations.

Of course, if it is to be eBay's 'order', given how they've arrogantly now claim staked every single aspect of inventory and offering and fulfillment sans ownership title, they may as well tatoo it too.

Word of warning though - this will have eTendrils that snake into almost every record form that will need a new field input - and many that take inputs from varient sources in the programming.

I'm sure eBay's thorough testing and configuration management is up for the challenge.  Right?

Is this the same as the ASIN in Amazon?

The design of ebay's system is one big "kludge" (long u).

They have added function upon function onto an already-existing pile of spaghetti code.  And they have no discernible "state model" for how transactions should flow through the system as various events occur.

The lack of an order number is just one more indicator of an insufficient model. Now they'll be dropping this meatball on top of the spaghetti, breaking God knows what else in the process.

I would expect there was an order number and we just weren't shown it until now.

No order numbers for me yet...  They will be useful a couple times a year when looking back for something but realistically it would be more helpful if eBay focused on measures to help increase sales.

Amazon is a catalog, and each unique product has a product page with a unique ASIN.

eBay has listings; you can find unique products in multiple listings (though eBay is trying to move to a catalog approach). Each listing as an Item Number.

Order numbers are tied to an actual transaction (order). It can consist of multiple products, but is one order placed by a customer.

Im not sure what the issue is here - Im sure its important to some sellers - just not me.

Maybe if you are %100 automated it makes things easier ??? who knows.

Personally .... all I want is for eBay to help me make sales - the rest I dont need help on.

eBays doing this either means 1) some big player asked them to 2) like others have said Adyen demanded it 3) eBay has some other nefarious plan - since they are never helpful or altruistic - and they HATE sellers so they wont ever help them. Best off to build a bar instead.

Its eBay - nothing ever makes sense.

I am not sure if "Order numbers" are being consistently supplied. The eBay Orders Report downloaded today has an Order Number column containing a 12-digit integer to tie together multiple row combined orders and nothing for single item orders. I am not sure what eBay intends, but limiting reports to 90 days makes them all but useless. eBay Collected Tax was added in mid-April, but values prior to that are not populated. New Jersey sales tax collected from April 1, 2019 is zero for the first half of April. Worse, reporting for Washington State, collected from January 1, 2019 is not in the report until mid-April and earlier amounts were never reported. The Orders Report in csv file format is not easy to process in Excel because column data is not typed - requiring extensive column reformatting in Excel before it can be imported into a relational database.  It is also missing Managed Payment fees. While PayPal is no different, the process is tolerable because it is possible to download and process an entire year of data in one session. Excel format downloads, prior and current year data, and integration with Managed Payments is needed.

For me, order numbers aren't necessary. I believe that eCrater has had order numbers since the beginning, and I've never used them for reference. The spreadsheet I keep for my sales has the date, items ordered, breakdown of the monies paid, and tracking number (and for California sales, the city and county for tax purposes).

@cfrphoto

You stated that PERFECTLY!

Tax info for the beginning of the year is missing.

eBay collected the money and added it to the sellers gross income when the seller never collected the money. . . .For me it only a few dollars but it's still a major error on eBay's part. . . .

@toolguy

Ebay does NOT add taxes collected by Ebay to be paid by Ebay to a seller's "gross income"

You are however correct that we can't get a report yet for the first part of the year.  But the new report in the Seller Hub does split out taxes collected by Ebay if you customize it to do so.
