eBay to Proceed with Annual Seller Conference in July

Despite facing a host of problems, eBay will proceed with its annual seller conference in July, and there are some tangible benefits to attending the event. In 2017, eBay invited all attendees into its special Concierge customer service program. And in 2018, eBay provided information about Managed Payments exclusively to eBay Open attendees.

This year, eBay Open will take place on July 23-25, 2019 at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas. The cost is $499 per attendee, a $100 increase from 2018 rates. The early bird rate is $350 for those who register by April 11, 2019. (In 2016, the regular registration fee was $199, and in 2017, it was $249.)

The event is a chance for sellers to meet with eBay staff face-to-face and attend workshops. About 2,000 sellers attended last year's eBay Open, with eBay reporting that over 60% of them were first-time sellers.

Last year, eBay also held its annual Top Seller Summit directly preceding the conference, which attracted 300 eBay top sellers representing more than $2B in GMV. (eBay defines Top Sellers as "large, merchant-size businesses with annual sales of $1 million-plus.")

During Devin Wenig's 2018 eBay Open keynote, the CEO told attendees he had a goal of increasing eBay's buyer base from 175 million to half a billion, and he said eBay would have to do the following: modernize the platform; get better at customer service; and get quality sellers and inventory on to the platform.

A lot has happened in the 8 months since the 2018 event, including the departure of some high-profile executives such as Scott Cutler, Bob Kupbens, Laura Chambers, and Dan Tarman - and of course, the attack by activist investors to which eBay recently capitulated.

Visit the 2019 eBay Open conference landing page for more information, and let us know if you plan to attend.

Gee - I've got an idea!

Why dont I take $500 of my money, get naked, light it on fire and dance around it in a circle while it burns - may THAT will help me sell more on eBay!?

Are they on CRACK? or is it April Fools Day already?

LMFAO - July 23-25, 2019 - Las Vegas, NV

Attendance fee is up $100 over last year.  Which is why Wenig is allowing the event to proceed despite the activist investors looking over his shoulder.

It's eBay..... Follow the money... it is the path to find the corporate truth.

CES is free, NY NOW is free, ABC Kids Expo is free, ASD is free, National Stationary Show is free, SEMA is $40 .....

And eBay is $500 .....

I guess its a (less) honest way for DW to get MORE money from sellers .. as apposed to a DIRECT GO FUND ME PAGE (so he can keep his job!)

Do I get to speak to DW?
Can I get an audience with his majesty the Grifter?
Will all my (non existant) negatives be erased if I go?
Does my Feedback go up to $100 if I go?

Well thats 4 Nos. TY DW for giving ma a good laugh ! (always knew you were a clown!)

And once again they don't accept payment by PayPal. Still in fear of all those SNAD cases being filed against them.

I hope Elliott has a big presence there, just to make Devin sweat.

"[Devin] said eBay would have to do the following: modernize the platform; get better at customer service; and get quality sellers and inventory on to the platform."

The site hasn't gotten better, customer service is still abysmal, and I don't recall him adding any quality sellers. So basically nothing he promised has come to fruition.

Ebay open is DEF for me about networking with other sellers, & meeting new people, hanging out in Vegas and partying. The Ebay open as a "Conference" isn't going to really help someone who's been on the platform for 12 years and done millions of dollars in sales.

OMG - what a shocker! Thank goodness it's ONLY going to be $500 - BFW - let's see get the plane tickets - book the hotel for a week because you know your going to ASD as well (and just why are you going?) Pay for food and entertainment - rent a car.
These people are ficken nuts. I'd rather take the week off - take the money and go on a cruise. What would I miss? SNAD's and fake scammy returns.
Actually I'm shocked that they have the gaul to up the price yet again another year.  Just how many attended last year's event? I remember 2005 - thousands of people came - Huey Lewis  and the News entertained us for free - the grub was beyond excellent and the eBay shop - well we were all in there buying eBay logo crap like drunken sailors on shore leave. It was our reward for a year of hard work. Ebay appreciated the seller's back then.  We belong to the Team! We all left there like Jim Jones followers - couldn't wait to get home and hit those keyboards - rah rah ebay we were obsessed loyal lunatic followers to the numbers.
We are certainly not the same old sellers anymore. The lies - the deception - the thievery - I have whiplash on a daily basis now.
So no I won't be going to ebay open yet again this year.

I won't be going.

"About 2,000 sellers attended last year's eBay Open, with eBay reporting that over 60% of them were first-time sellers."

So only 40% were seasoned sellers that saw value in going. . . .

But I will say eBay has a lot of GREAT Quality Sellers still on the platform.

Many of the sellers I buy from on eBay have their own large websites like: Optics Planet & Botach

"About 2,000 sellers attended last year's eBay Open, with eBay reporting that over 60% of them were first-time sellers."

That would be people who all hoped that going - would provide some kind of miracle for their accounts. NEWSFLASH - it didnt.

"So only 40% were seasoned sellers that saw value in going. . . ."

Those people were hoping, hope against hope - that talking to someone (anyone with some sanity and/or business experience) there, that eBay would help them with their slowly dieing sales, the theftacular returns, and the hidden listings ... but it didnt.

Of course there will be plenty of people THIS year with the same hopes and dreams - hoping against hope that maybe THIS TIME (since eBay is more desperate/against the ropes due to investor pressure) they can get some help.

BUT, a wise man once said that the true definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again - expecting the outcome to be different. So, people will again plunk down hard earned coin hoping/expecting eBay to "care" and help them ... jokes "on you pal", the outcome will be the same.

Better off go to any/all of the shows I mentioned above - most small makers have $200-300 minimum opening orders - you'll get further ahead then lining DWs pockets.

Want to bet that the number of Ebay Employees who are there this year will be maybe 50% of who went last year?  I heard that last year there was already a large decrease in the number of employees who go, plus it was held at the hotel where the sniper shooting had been so they were basically giving the rooms away plus the meeting rooms were all tossed in also.

If they have it at the same place this year its probably costing more because the hotel is not in need of their business as much as last year which would explain the increase in cost.  I also heard from others that went that everything was done on the cheap compared to when they held it at the MGM hotel in previous years but again, they keep raising the cost.  I am guessing that is  so that Ebay is out nothing for their employees going there by commercial planes as only Wenig gets to fly the corporate jet.

What I can't wait for is to see if Ebay has the guts to once again broadcast the shareholders meeting this year without suddenly losing sound just as the Q & A starts as I am sure it is going to be a doozy this year.  Not that I am able to go, but I cannot see my self spending $500 just to attend their conference in addition to room, food and airfare to get there, although i would also stay through the weekend to get the Ebay stench off of me before going back home.

You COULD spend $500 for nothing OR

You could go to the Prosper Show (in Vegas as well) for Amazon sellers. (People here love to compare eBay vs Amazon.

"Prosper is an annual conference focused on sharing best practice education and providing significant networking opportunities for established Amazon seller"

BTW - its FREE ......

@OnlyPollyPocket - Back in 2005, life was good on eBay. So there were enough people making lots of money who could afford to go. In 2018, and going by the reports on this blog, sales were terrible and sellers couldn't waste the little money they were making.

At last year's Ebay Open, the big selling tip that Wenig gave to sellers was to "have the right product at the right price".

Here are some of the other tips to sell more on ebay:
Find products in high demand with little competition.
Sell items that you can get cheaply and sell them for a much higher price.
Find products that people want to buy.
Buy rare items that are below market value.

There were 7 eBay Lives, each one we covered in-depth, by sending Ina, a crew of writers, photographers and videographers:

2002 - Anaheim
2003 - Orlando
2004 - New Orleans
2005 - San Jose
2006 - Las Vegas
2007 - Boston
2008 - Chicago

If memory serves, Las Vegas was the best attended eBay Live with ~15,000 people. There is a huge trove of coverage in our archives, pictures, interviews, articles. The thing that jumps out is the number of eBay-related services that attended that are no longer in existence, and the huge changeover in eBay employees. It might be a challenge to find a recognizable face in those old pictures.
