What Should eBay Do with Billions from StubHub Sale?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is selling its StubHub ticket-resale marketplace for $4.05 billion, nearly a year after activist investor Elliott Management forced its way into the picture and recommended eBay consider selling StubHub, eBay Classifieds, and possibly the eBay marketplace itself.

The acquiring company, viago, is headed by StubHub cofounder Eric Baker, who had left before eBay acquired StubHub in 2007 for $310 million.

eBay's Scott Schenkel, who took over as interim CEO after Devin Wenig's departure on September 25th, said the eBay leadership team and Board of Directors "concluded that this was the best path forward for both eBay and StubHub" and said it maximized long-term value for eBay shareholders.

Schenkel told CNBC that proceeds from the deal will be put toward stock buybacks, dividends and M&A investing.

Think there's any room for eBay to "spare a square" for customers? What would you ask for as a buyer and as a seller? After all, helping buyers buy and sellers sell is also adding value for shareholders.

"Selling on eBay should be NO DIFFERENT then opening a store at a mall."

Here's where you are WRONG, because it is different. . .Maybe that's the root of your problem.

You think ecommerce is the same as brick & mortar retail. . . . .They are world's apart from each other!

Why is it different?

On Amazon - all you do is fullfill inventory, period. You have NO (little) control over anything except price.

eBay ISNT a merchant. They "sell space". They bring in traffic, you list, you sell, you give them commission.

Even Amazon gives you your customers phone numbers!

Im not sure why you think selling on eBay is any different then taking space in a mall - in fact - eBay even tries to SELL YOU A STORE!

HIS (PIERRES) had NO UPC, NO item specific, he couldnt get paid anyway he wanted - he would be FORCED into Paypal or into eBay pay, he would be open for SNAD or INR (if there was an issue) and he would be FORCED to take it back under what is todays returns policies.

What part is unclear?

From the article (in case you think I make stuff up)

"He remembered that during Auction Web’s early days, people would send their payments in in the form of coins taped to index cards. He also said that from the very early days until now, the trust found in the eBay ecosystem comes from the belief that “people are basically good.”

A) he didnt pay with any "ebay approved payments"
B) eBay doesnt believe sellers are basically good - they lie cheat and steal from them 24/7

"I felt that we should have a community that embraces a system of values.”

C) what values (comparing then and now) are even close to being the same?

@pace306

You really need me to explain the difference between ecommerce and brick & mortar to you? You know how foolish that sounds?

How about I tell what they have in common, the list is way shorter.

You buy an item and you pay for it

Now the list of differences would fill the rest of this page

(If I really need to post a few dozen differences I can on your request)

@toolguy, retail is retail, no matter where the business is being conducted. A business pays rent for their space and they run their business as they see fit without any undue intrusions from the landlord.

This marketplace facilitator law they have wrongfully created should also be applied to every mall owner, big and small -- if they're going to continue going that route. That wouldn't make a lot of sense, would it? So why would it make sense for any business conducting business within a mall -- online or offline.

Tool

With all due respect - I have NO IDEA what your point is.

eBay is a website that "matches" buyers and sellers, no more no less.

It is NOT a retailer (so IT says) - not sure what you are trying to compare.

eBay ONLY has control over sellers because A) they put quasi-illegalities in their TOS/UA, and the TONS of lawyers they have on staff, are there to insure that they are on "the line" legally but dont cross it.

If you want to (again) compare eBay to retail - we can.

If you rented a store in a mall - and eBay states OPENLY that they want you to pay for an eBay store - $14.99 a month last I looked - you would NEVER put up with the garbage eBay pulls on sellers.

Would the store manager tell you how your customers can pay?

Can he/she tell you how to display (list your items)(can the sweaters be in the same section as pants?)

Could he/she tell you what your returns policy should be?

Could he/she hide your store ?

Could he/she tell you how and when you can contact YOUR buyer?

Could the mall punish you if you ship a day or so later then "promised"?

You can say its the same - but theres TONS of differences that eBay does to sellers that are NOT the same as retail.

Is there a part of this that I am not making understandable? or will you "toolishly" continue to exist that eBay has the rights to do to sellers, things that no other place would?

In any case - this is all off topic - the money belongs to the sellers eBay has stolen from - that they havent gotten caught isnt the point.

In any case - making your sellers whole (a hundred or so to each seller defrauded or maybe a free year of a premium level store for example) would go A LONG WAY to fixing eBays abysmal image in the ecommerce world - more so then a few stupid tv ads. Sellers would then say "eBay CARES about me, so maybe I should come back/redouble my efforts to help eBay grow"

@ebayout, I must have missed that comment about the PayPal fee on sales tax. I'm not sure what Tool said, but PP is entitled to that fee. However, since the marketplaces are the ones being required to collect the tax, THEY should be the ones covering an expense incurred relating to that.

The marketplaces also should NOT be charging their commission on the sales tax portion. We never see that money. They are the ones collecting it, not us. So, why are we paying any fees on it?

@ebayout

Paypal has only been charging a fee on sales tax for a month, you act like it's been going on for some time. . . .
