Jordan Sweetnam Returns with New Message for eBay Sellers

By: Ina Steiner

eBay executive Jordan Sweetnam returned to the eBay Seller Announcement Board today with another message for sellers. The head of eBay Americas rejoined the company in July after a 3-year stint at Walmart, and we covered his initial September 30th post where he addressed the change in top leadership and said eBay wanted to hear from sellers to ensure their success.

In today's post, Sweetnam announced that his colleague Marni Levine, Vice President of Merchandising, was now Vice President of Seller Operations and Engagement:

"Marni will partner closely with our product and engineering lead Harry Temkin (VP, Seller Experience) to hold all of eBay accountable for delivering only the best end to end experience for our sellers. Marni and her team will bring your voice into everything we do, reboot our engagement through events and regular touch points, and foster a strong spirit of community."

Sweetnam also addressed three key areas in his post: Internet sales tax, Marketing spend, and Category focus.

He said eBay would use its strong marketing budget to drive buyers to sellers' listings through a variety of channels: advertising, search and owned channels, social media and more. He said eBay is expanding its "channel mix."

And he had this to say about buyer promotions:

"While we previously cast a wide net, we now have more knowledge of our customers and their behavior. This means we can use incentives to meet their specific needs, allowing us to "surprise and delight," but not rely heavily on site-wide coupons."

Sweetnam used some of the stock messaging sellers have grown accustomed to: "We don't compete with you and we never will," and "multi-year journey," for example.

He also told sellers eBay allows them to build their brand on eBay. "We allow you to build your brand on eBay, because we firmly believe eBay is strongest when you feel a strong connection to the customers - from hobbyists to small businesses, and everything in between."

We're curious if readers agree or disagree, and if you have specific concerns about branding your business on eBay. Here's your chance to weigh in.

One statement jumped out as a potential sign eBay may be open to paying more attention to non-commodity goods:

"Protecting and growing our ownable selection of things you cannot find at mainstream retailers. New: from espresso machines to the exact car part; refurbished tech and tools from your favorite brands; hard to find collectibles and comics; and the magic of mainstreet, from toy stores to local artists."

Let us know what you think of Sweetnam's second post, which you can read in full on the eBay website - keeping it constructive is appreciated! And be sure to send me promotions you encounter, we're curious what how eBay will be enticing shoppers to buy.

Simple question for Mr. Sweetnam…
"Have you ever walked into a Walgreen's and saw shelves that were covered up...
especially in the aisle you were searching?"

Before ebay undertakes it's next reinvention-of-the-month. Maybe it should take a gander at it's embarrassingly glitch ridden platform.

I am proud to announce today's major screw up. Just picked this off the boards

''We are aware that item descriptions suddenly going missing on active listings at eBay. They are not really gone from the listings, but being hidden due to some HTML code that eBay is adding to the bottom of the iFrame code. This issue has been reported to the eBay developers and we are awaiting a fix. Please do not end your listings.

This was posted on Seller Sourcebook this morning 11/8/19''

This joke of a company doesn't deserve to be in business.

The question is, when is Schenkel going to address the sellers, this is a weak effort on his part to send out this guy, we need to hear from Schenkel about the Good Til Canceled automated renewal disaster and if he is going to continue this criminal program of Wenig's and Harry Temkin's who flat out lied to sellers upon the inception of this program in March.

Temkin made up the fictional account that eBay did this so listings would rank better in search engine results and under no circumstances did Devin approve this scheme to generate additional fees for eBay.

Let's hear what you have to say Scott about this issue and Wenig's other disaster Seller Hub, and now the destruction of the classic MyeBay interface with your new abomination buyer and seller overview pages.

Mr. Sweetnam:

I do believe you want to hear from the sellers to understand what's happening. First though, you need to understand that the figures eBay quotes of gains in new sellers and buyers are fictitious. The ones who are no longer there and haven't been there for years. Your base is incorrect. You do NOT have the people to bring the money to eBay like before. They've left, gone to greener pastures, or just had enough. Wall Street doesn't seem to have the ability to process such a simple fact.

You can't make a difference if you don't even know what you're dealing with. I have mentioned this many times, but I have several eBay accounts....many not active for a few years. Only one, 3 years old, was shut down by eBay for inactivity. If you try to use those figures to factor what potential is out there, you will be left with egg on your face.

Ebay needs to face it's own inadequacies, fraudulent figures, etc before it can do anything. Once you have the real data, you'll understand what every other seller on eBay already knows. The buyers are GONE!

Secondly, shut down your boards. They do more damage than good to your company. Run by absolute lunatics.

An even simpler question for Sweetnam…
"How do you justify NOT showing listings that have been PAID FOR?"

Seriously, lets just face the facts here,,,, china sellers and their items are now the majority of ebay, they list super low cost items, and most really don't give a shit about buyers, the math is simple, the bidding wars are long gone, and ebay just doesn't make as much money from these items, this has also driven away a lot of buyers not interested in waiting months for a $2 item, that they can buy at the Dollar Store today, or wanting to open endless INR SNAD cases every time they get burned from these sellers, and it's a lot.

ebay had no choice to apply higher fee's to make ends meet, and at the same time create draconian policies to protect buyers from these china sellers, these draconian polices, and fee's have driven away good higher end sellers, their items and their buyers, ebay is mostly now just a wasteland of, pure garbage, even their big brands list only refurbished, stuff that should have been thrown in the dumpster

in this holiday just around the corner, sales will be just another sad result for ebay, just like the last few and it's already over, because, it's already November, and most of the items on ebay cannot be purchased as gifts, they would take 2 months to arrive, and that's if they arrive at all, Amazon will again totally kick ebay's ass

ebay will never recover, they have nothing left to offer, other then $2 trinkets from china, the next 5 years will just sadly be a exact copy of the last 5 and the remaining sellers stupid enough to think some talking head bigwig is going to fix / change ebay, are foolish, they will only pay dearly to keep ebay in business,

Jordan has a job, but sadly it's not to actually fix ebay, it's just to actually CONvince you they are.

"Jordan has a job"

Yes but it is impossible to help sellers that eBay executives such as Devin Wenig and Harry Temkin whose lives have been made miserable by the policies they have forced on us.

I do not want to be held hostage by eBay having to watch my listings to insure they do not defraud my accounts with their criminal Good Til Canceled automated fee churning listing renewal script.

I do not want to use their abominations Seller Hub and their new Seller overview pages in MyeBay, they have even ruined that interface introducing Seller Hub type ideas into all their new overview pages they are forcing on users in MyeBay.

In other words running a business on eBay is nothing short of utter folly due to eBay policies introduced in the last few years by Wenig, the next disaster will be eBay Payments.

This is why we are moving the bulk of our inventory off of eBay, there is no way to grow a business on eBay when they are forcing idiotic policies on sellers non-stop that we despise.

We can only hope the new incoming CEO is an intelligent person who will go back a few years and read the history of these bad 'so called innovations' which are nothing more than a plan to copy Amazon.

When we see these policies reversed we may one day be able to enjoy working on eBay, but now eBay has become a living hell, they would know these things simply be reading their own forums.

wow wow wow - this is the most interesting thread Ina has run AND it has ALOT of great info for sellers - the majority of it being Get out Now while you can - I read stuff here I didn't even know - I feel like I've been living under a rock all the while working so ferociously on my own website.  What a sad conclusion we are approaching to a once great venue.

Mr Sweetnam:

Another day, another slap in the face from eBay's marvelous buyers. I accept all returns automatically. I also pay for all returns. Most buyers think they have to file a false claim in order to get free shipping. Pretty sad, isn't it? eBay taught them that move. Here is the description for an item I sold and the message I was sent for a return.

"Hi, these earrings are 18k, not sure if they are even real at this point. I would like to return please. Acid test 18k and not 18k. They look like something else and got made into earrings. I would like to do a return for full refund".

Yes, Mr. Sweetnam, I reported the buyer. I am a top rated seller and in order for eBay to help me, I have to jump through the hoops you've established so this nutbar doesn't damage my account. This is selling on eBay now.

"When did Meg Whitman leave?"

I have a good friend who has been selling on eBay for 15 years.

This morning I asked him what he thought of the new interm CEO at eBay, his response was priceless.

"When did Meg Whitman leave"?

He's clueless to "eBay politics" ~ LOL

Mr. Sweetnam:

You've heard from many posters here of their feelings and feedback about eBay. Some are rather harsh to hear I'm sure. How about you show some conviction and post a message here. Maybe that might show your desire to assist your sellers in the future.

The new CEO has to decide if he is going to continue to run Devin Wenig's fee churning platform or if he is going to build out a marketplace that is able to grow sales 10% a year to generate final value fees, if it is the prior eBay is doomed to a final death.

ebay is way too far gone,,,,, 10 years of total destruction by the last two idiots, is irreversible, I mean Seriously,,,they even sold off PayPal, try and reverse that scam blunder,

A new CEO talking head won't make one single bit of difference, it's just not humanly possible, ebay is ruined beyond repair, it will die a very slow death, no different ,like many other once mighty companies, that hired incompetent idiots to control them,

so sad.....

Well one thing is sure, pissing sellers off by holding them hostage on a daily basis forcing them to log into their accounts to end listings to avoid being fee churned by Wenig and Temkin's automated free churning relisting script is not going to garner them any good will.

We are pulling inventory from eBay and not listing new items.

If they can build a company on fee churning God Bless them, but fraud always fails in the end and it is not keeping with the law of the land.

eBay will be busted in the end or their own criminal schemes will completely destroy the company.
