Jordan Sweetnam Returns with New Message for eBay Sellers

By: Ina Steiner

eBay executive Jordan Sweetnam returned to the eBay Seller Announcement Board today with another message for sellers. The head of eBay Americas rejoined the company in July after a 3-year stint at Walmart, and we covered his initial September 30th post where he addressed the change in top leadership and said eBay wanted to hear from sellers to ensure their success.

In today's post, Sweetnam announced that his colleague Marni Levine, Vice President of Merchandising, was now Vice President of Seller Operations and Engagement:

"Marni will partner closely with our product and engineering lead Harry Temkin (VP, Seller Experience) to hold all of eBay accountable for delivering only the best end to end experience for our sellers. Marni and her team will bring your voice into everything we do, reboot our engagement through events and regular touch points, and foster a strong spirit of community."

Sweetnam also addressed three key areas in his post: Internet sales tax, Marketing spend, and Category focus.

He said eBay would use its strong marketing budget to drive buyers to sellers' listings through a variety of channels: advertising, search and owned channels, social media and more. He said eBay is expanding its "channel mix."

And he had this to say about buyer promotions:

"While we previously cast a wide net, we now have more knowledge of our customers and their behavior. This means we can use incentives to meet their specific needs, allowing us to "surprise and delight," but not rely heavily on site-wide coupons."

Sweetnam used some of the stock messaging sellers have grown accustomed to: "We don't compete with you and we never will," and "multi-year journey," for example.

He also told sellers eBay allows them to build their brand on eBay. "We allow you to build your brand on eBay, because we firmly believe eBay is strongest when you feel a strong connection to the customers - from hobbyists to small businesses, and everything in between."

We're curious if readers agree or disagree, and if you have specific concerns about branding your business on eBay. Here's your chance to weigh in.

One statement jumped out as a potential sign eBay may be open to paying more attention to non-commodity goods:

"Protecting and growing our ownable selection of things you cannot find at mainstream retailers. New: from espresso machines to the exact car part; refurbished tech and tools from your favorite brands; hard to find collectibles and comics; and the magic of mainstreet, from toy stores to local artists."

Let us know what you think of Sweetnam's second post, which you can read in full on the eBay website - keeping it constructive is appreciated! And be sure to send me promotions you encounter, we're curious what how eBay will be enticing shoppers to buy.

These executive will keep pushing the same agendas that have been rejected by the seller universe at their own expense, they understand no other way, they have never listened to seller feedback on their own forums for the last decade.

Here is the 'Big Bang' as Wenig likes to say for eBay executives.

eBay has ruined the MyeBay interface by continuous ill advised 'improvements' they call new overview pages which are an abomination on the seller and buyer sides and have 'Big Bang' forced users into them.

eBay has 'Big Banged' sellers into Seller Hub which is universally hated by eBay Sellers who would have stayed in the old MyeBay (that eBay has now ruined).

eBay has 'Big Banged' the search engine forcing sellers into promoted listings to be seen which makes listing on eBay unprofitable.

eBay is 'Big Banging" sellers and buyers into using eBay managed payments.

Last but not least, eBay has 'Big Banged' sellers into their lunatical Good Til Canceled fixed price listings which holds seller hostage to watching every eBay seller account daily so we do not get fee churned by this illegal and criminal automated program.

Until eBay executives wake up and understand that sellers do not want to be 'Big Banged' by eBay, sellers will remain completely turned off by anything any eBay executive says, including the new incoming CEO who should fire all the 'Big Bang' executives on day number one.

I don't think there are any lies there because first Jordan would have to say something.

I read the entire speech with an open mind. Walked away with nothing.

As usual the majority of it is very general with no specifics. For example, I read this over and over and for the life of me have no idea what on earth this guy is talking about.

"While we previously cast a wide net, we now have more knowledge of our customers and their behavior. This means we can use incentives to meet their specific needs, allowing us to “surprise and delight,” but not rely heavily on site-wide coupons."

And then this

"We don't compete with you and we never will."

Talk about an assault on our intelligence. If buyers can even see our items, they can't see our descriptions until they drill down 3 giant lines of ads to then be met with a salvo of 'better, cheaper' options AFTER the sale. And that's only if they can navigate around all of the 3rd party ads junking up the site.

Not a single word about search, technical issues, seller protection, disruptive changes. Nothing. And so much 'we, we, we.' How about a little 'you' for a change. What are you going to do for us. Sellers don't give a darn how you plan to reinvent yourselves every month. They want you to GTF out of the way, simplicity and sales. Period.

It's the same ole crap, different day, different do-nothing executive Act II

"While we previously cast a wide net" - is he the Gortons Fisherman?

"The head of eBay Americas rejoined the company in July after a 3-year stint at Walmart" ... Walmart is catching up to Amazon (so says an article on Seeking Alpha), so why did he REALLY come back? Why did he leave to start with? What are they all hiding?

"This means we can use incentives to meet their specific needs, allowing us to "surprise and delight," but not rely heavily on site-wide coupons" ... no specifics at all = useless garbage. Until now ebay has been giving out coupons like Halloween candy - are they going to stop? (not that it ever impacted me at all anyway).

""We don't compete with you and we never will," - %100 lie (aka lawyer speak). We dont "compete with you directly since we dont actually sell anything", but we give out to SPECIFIC people Chinese and Brands) perks, lower costs, and visibility that you dont get. (So in Lawyer speak) "even though we do that - it isnt direct action, so we can say "We dont compete with you". And they think we all are so stupid that we cant see it??????? If ebay hides my listing for sneakers and puts Nike there instead - THATS competing (just its indirect). (Dopes)(Yes Jordan - Im talking to you)

"eBay allows them to build their brand on eBay" ... HOW? eBay hides and diminishes the value of stores, by hiding them, hiding listings, not promoting them and bluring the lines/listings so that customers cant find/rely on those "brands". The ONLY brands they value are NIKE type brands.

"we firmly believe eBay is strongest when you feel a strong connection to the customers - from hobbyists to small businesses, and everything in between" - except when eBay makes it hard for sellers and buyers to connect with the draconian rules for CONTACT between the 2 parties. Geez, even Amazon gives you a buyers phone # .......

How much are they paying this clown?

First ebay you have to show a seller's listings. We did an audit yesterday of our listings, out of 100, 61 are showing in the search. 39 are not even being shown to potential buyers, and we are paying for this BS??. This is why we at this point last year had 15,000 listings, now we are down to less than 3000 and hope to be out of this sinking ship by March. Amazon is a much better option, facebook marketplace also. Starting a website is very simple on Shopify.  Ebay is a broken "has been"  marketplace.

Must be the Algo at work that says if they are not paying for a store, promoted listings and paying to relist items over and over we will not show their items.

Then you have the one where if they post the truth about eBay on our forums we put the seller in the not shown unless they are the only seller on eBay with the item and we need the inventory to close and isolated sale.

Again - tough crowd - but rightly so - I'm so over the top disgusted with this UnAmerican site that has sold it's soul to the Chinese I want to vomit. These corporate guys should be up for treason. Plain and simple. Until Americans start supporting Americans it's over - we've already slipped into 3rd world status - our children have no future. My ebay sales are absolutely non-existant - I'me paying little attention to that site and doing my own thing whereas I used to promote and support the heck out of ebay. Those days are long gone. Good luck with your advertising scams and hoop jumping and defrauding the sellers. I'm just over it.

Love this!! More smoke and mirrors. The only thing that will change is how much less money you make. That’s it! Bottom line. They rely on heavily on the naivety of sellers and buyers. Good luck to you sellers during the holiday season. Try not to stress too much...

notfunanymore, it is ironic that eBay sellers are some of their largest customers, so as they disgust sellers with nitpicking fees like the Good Til Canceled automated relisting script, sellers tend to cut spending on eBay services even more.

Now constantly shooting yourself in the foot is what got Devin Wenig fired, they say he stepped down, but he was fired for sure.

it's really quite insulting the nonsense that spews out of these people, after 10 years of truly punishing policy, that literally destroyed peoples livelihoods, it would believable if they actually did something positive towards regaining trust, and just stop all the talking head nonsense

There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ebay can say to fix ebay, they must ACT first, they know what the issues are, so they can skip the Q and A crap too.

More of the same corporate jargon, gobbledygook, mumbo jumbo coming from eBay as always. Nothing ever of any substance or meaning. Everything always has to be smokescreens and diversions with them. No surprises here.

Could be the institutions getting out or a rush of insider selling, they know the company is in a mess for at least 2 years because of Wenig's programs imploding.

Remember how Wenig was begging for more time to 'modernize the marketplace' at eBay open.

Well, you are seeing the results of all those programs flopping all at the same time, perfect short seller storm.

Sweetnam used some of the stock messaging sellers have grown accustomed to: "We don't compete with you and we never will,"

Horsehockey!!!  Stop with the corporate semantics already...

Memo to the ill informed Mr Sweetnam: eBay collects revenue for competitive ads placed on listing pages sellers are paying for...

Wake up Mr Sweetnam.... eBay IS COMPETING with sellers by the act of accepting revenue and allowing those ads to be placed.
