eBay Floats Fulfillment Pilot Program for Sellers

By: Ina Steiner

Last week eBay invited some sellers to participate in "Fulfillment for eBay," but the pilot program works differently from the rival Fulfillment By Amazon program (FBA). Instead of building out its own fulfillment centers, as Amazon has done, eBay is working with third-party fulfillment services.

Keep in mind that one of the most compelling things about Amazon's program is the fact that FBA products qualify for free delivery through Amazon Prime, meaning sellers' listings become more appealing to shoppers.

It's unclear if eBay is considering rolling out a Prime-like program as it did in Australia this summer, where shoppers pay $49/year to qualify for free shipping through the program, called eBay Plus. eBay is also using a third-party fulfillment company in Australia rather than building its own infrastructure there.

eBay enticed sellers on eBay.com last week by promising that participants' listings would qualify for "Guaranteed Delivery" to 90% of buyers: "end-to-end fulfillment on 3-day deliveries are standard for 90% of buyers in the continental US," it stated.

eBay described additional benefits of participating in the fulfillment pilot program as follows:

- Enjoy special eBay negotiated, variable shipping rates.
- See increased velocity that can boost your sales.
- Focus on selling, while eBay and our partners handle the rest

In order to participate in the pilot program, sellers must use either eBay listing tools or use one of the following listing tools: ChannelAdvisor, Shopify, Zentail, SellerActive, GeekSeller, InkFrog, or WooCommerce. eBay is looking for sellers who can turn over their inventory within 3 months, and sellers must be able to split their inventory into at least two locations.

eBay will run the pilot for a limited period of time and then evaluate its performance to determine the future direction of the program.

eBay has been floating the idea of offering its own fulfillment program on and off for the past decade. eBay currently offers a fulfillment program in Germany as well as Australia. eBay Germany hired former Amazon EU's Director of Prime Michael Pasch in 2017.

Let us know if you'd be interested in participating in the program and what you think of it.

TOOL - with all due respect - why would it be "a good thing to have eBay drop ship for you!" JUST CURIOUS.

As an aside - how much do you think sellers make on things?

HINT: sellers of new items (not used, not Chinese junk, not industrial, not automobiles) get %45 to 50 off MSRP. With the VERY HIGH cost of shipping, eBay's VIG on the sale AND on shipping and with the CONSTANT pressure by eBay to concentrate on PRICE ..... where is the margin to "do this fantasy"???

(At least

I ask - because Ive ONLY been doing this since the early 80's and "I know nothing about how this works"

We don't participate in Prime and won't participate in this.. any online shopper with half a brain knows that the prices of those products are significantly higher in most cases and the better deals are with sellers who stock and ship their own inventory.

I used FBA for approximately two years and was amazed by how awful it is. I didn’t realize how bad it was until I started stocking in house again.

If you’re moving massive quantities for a select few skus, it might be okay. But there are fifty fulfillment companies who will handle that for you. Otherwise, they break and lose so much stuff you’re guaranteed to lose money.

I take my business seriously. I would never trust these companies with my inventory or livliehood.

I can say this... Amazon has insanely low express shipping rates. Something that costs me $120 to Overnight was maybe $25 on FBA.

For the very same reason sellers use FBA. . . .

@toolguy - Amazon has warehouses all over the place, preferential treatment by the post office, trucks that personally deliver items, and years of doing FBA so they know what they're doing. Contrast that with FBE (Fulfillment by eBay) where all we're getting is vague details (what's the cost?) where it sounds like the sellers will be doing all the work and eBay will be seeing all the benefits. Couple that with the fact that eBay can't seem to do anything right, add in a few glitches, and I pity any seller who falls for this latest money-grabbing scheme.

@iheartjacksparrow

Wouldn't it be funny if eBay used Amazon warehouses to do FBE out of.

Anything is possible. . . .

Tool 😀 there’s actual sales on Amazon! Not do on eBay.

And until there’s a buy box on eBay - there’s no benefit to do so.

One of the key benefits of FBA is getting that box and all the sales.

😀 point set game match

Do you ever have anything positive to say about eBay?

But yet you still sell there!

Your last post makes NO sense.

Like a previous poster already said

Many eBay sellers use FBA for their shipping needs. . . .eBay knows this and wants in on the game, just like payments. . . .

You're correct, customers want to see product video's

We have ton's of video's shown under our products, they work great, customers love them, and they definitely help to sell our products, would not be the same without product video's

It's not viable for me.  Aside from lack of trustworthiness, the biggest ding against FBA was having to pay to mail in and out of their warehouses.  It was hard enough turning a profit on Scamazon without even more fees like that.  If I could've driven there, I might've considered it.  FBE is out of the question for the same reasons.

I'm pretty sure that most if not all of the programsusinesses ebay has ever started or copied has failed. Even Stubhub sells fake tickets.

After over a decade of failures and demoralizing abuse against sellers, how could anyone trust them to even show your item much less ship it for you.

It'$ clear why eBay want$ to do thi$.

What isn't clear is why any seller in their right mind would want to.  Or need to.  Even if eBay - or any 'partner' they chose ( who likey paid them for the privelege) could be trusted not to hose it up.

No, there’s nothing positive to say. It’s a necessity not a want.

It’s abit hard to find a silver lining when the lightening from the storm tries to zap you on purpose

“Your last post makes NO sense“ - sorry you didn’t understand it - you were never in retail/wholesale/etail.

Part of FBA is getting the box - it’s not rocket science SIR.

"Enjoy special eBay negotiated, variable shipping rates."

They should be passing that on NOW, especially with the CONSTANT ANNUAL INCREASES, and the S#$T just got real with the zone-base pricing:  https://i.imgur.com/kc1BgvG.jpg

and USPS is lowering the dimensional divisor later this year to take an even bigger chunk out of everyone's bottom line.

if ebay would actually negotiate something - prices would drop on the site, making their venue more attractive than Scamazon, and sales would increase by default, everyone would make more money.  BUT THAT MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE.  They WANT higher rates because their 10% take is higher.  Then they have to withold their ability to get better carrier rates, and use it as some convoluted way to try and create dependence and hoop jumping to generate a sale that would happen by default if the items were simply visible in search 24/7 until they sold.

2018 saw about 15% of my sales go through on OTHER platforms, with not much additional effort.  I already get better shipping rates than ebay passes on through OTHER providers - WAY better.  They also don't control my return policy, they don't force me to be liable for at least a month, they take about 1/2 the cut that ebay does, don't force me to ship things in one day and pay for returns to have exposure.  The items talk for themselves and sell when they are visible.  So guess it's time to make a full court press to these other platforms?
