Fall Update: eBay Raises Fees as It Makes More Demands on Sellers

eBay is raising fees even as it makes more demands on its sellers. The bad news came in the third and final Seller Update announced today.

eBay explained, "We are increasing our investment in our platform, marketing efforts, and tools to enhance both the seller and buyer experience."

But the decision to raise fees comes less than 3 weeks after eBay revealed another quarter of stalled growth, coming in at single-digit sales growth compared to Etsy and Amazon's strong double-digit growth in sales.

One change in fees is remarkable as it comes at a time when consumers are turning to digital content (ebooks, music subscriptions, and streaming movies), including from its arch rival: eBay is increasing commission fees for the Books and DVDS & Movies categories to 12%, and is removing the fee advantage it had given to Store owners:

Starting September 15, 2018, the final value fees for Books, and DVDs & Movies categories will increase from 9.15% to 12% for Store subscribers and from 10% to 12% for non-Store sellers.

Starting September 15, 2018, the final value fees for the Music category will also increase from 9.15% to 12% for both Store subscribers and non-Store sellers, with the exception of the Records category, which will remain at 9.15% for Store subscribers and 10% for non-Store sellers.

Some auction sellers use a Reserve price when they are uncertain if eBay will be able to net them a profitable selling price on auction listings, but that safety net is becoming more expensive:

Starting September 15, 2018, the feature fee for Reserve price will increase to either $5 or 7.5%, whichever is greater and the Reserve fee cap will increase from $100 to $250. In some Business & Industrial categories, the feature fee will remain at a flat fee of $5.

And sellers who try to boost visibility in search results by paying extra to include a Subtitle in listings, or use a Value Pack, will also see fees go up in certain cases:

The feature fee for Subtitle will increase from $0.50 to $1 for listings with 1-, 3-, 5-, 7- and 10-day listing durations and an item price of up to $150, and from $1 to $3 for listings with an item price of more than $150. For 30-day duration and Good 'Til Cancelled listings with an item price up to $150, the feature fee will remain unchanged at $1.50. For 30-day duration and Good 'Til Cancelled listings with an item price of more than $150, the feature fee will increase to $6.

The feature fee for Value Pack will increase from $0.65 to $1.15 for listings with 1-, 3-, 5-, 7- and 10-day listing durations and an item price of up to $150, and from $1.30 to $3.15 for listings with an item price of more than $150. For 30-day duration and Good 'Til Cancelled listings with an item price up to $150, the feature fee will remain unchanged at $2. For 30-day duration and Good 'Til Cancelled listings with an item price of more than $150, the feature fee will increase to $6.50.

And finally, eBay is removing the incentive to list auctions for lower-volume sellers:

Starting October 4, 2018, unlimited insertion fee credits for auction-style listings that end in a sale will be available exclusively to US and Canadian Store subscribers with Basic, Premium, Anchor, and Enterprise Store subscriptions. Starter Store subscribers and non-Store sellers will no longer receive these insertion fee credits. Only listings created after you sign up for a Store subscription will be eligible for a credit.

At the same time eBay is raising fees, it's delivering less (see eBay's second-quarter results) and demanding more, pressuring sellers to offer free 30-day returns, forcing them into the new Seller Hub, and charging them penalty fees for having high rates of SNAD returns. In addition, eBay is giving such sellers less visibility, announcing today, "Starting November 1, 2018, if you have very high rates of "item not received" requests, you may be subject to extended delivery estimates in affected categories."

There are a many changes coming as part of the Fall Seller Update, be sure to read and study all of the changes, and then let us know how the changes will impact you.

And the Titanic continues steaming full speed ahead towards the inevitable iceberg.  The writing is on the wall, ebay's days are numbered.

Like many here I would like to see Ebay at least make a failed attempt to re-ignite its original markets of used and one of a kind items.
Were it not ebay, the masters of incompetence, it would be surprising that they have not attempted to do so....

ebay will need to get more money from less sales / sellers, it will be another big fee increase, if I had to guess it will probably from the new ebay / Adyen payments, and or shipping labels./ or global shipping, they will hit every seller except china sellers, as you clearly see these new fee's don't impact china at all,

I suspect, because of the problems with the shipping window and the funny response from Blues about the post on Needing the Full address to win INR,
that eBay is going to Make it mandatory to ship with them for All postage needs.

They will then get to keep MORE of the shipping money that they are making now. but not telling anyone. If other sites are giving such LOW shipping to their Sellers, then I get a hinky feeling that eBay is too. They are just pocketing it.

OT Someone Wrote about how every New update toke away from Sellers. The poster had every Seller up date for years back and how it took money away from Sellers. I saw that posted both here and on the ebay community forum. Could someone post the link so I could study it? I really wished I had not read it so quickly.

Any body know of Good baskets to put eggs in besides eBay? I sell 50's collectables, kitchen ware, barbie dolls, etc.
Thank You in advanced. :(

The Adyen beta test doesn't have to work. It just has to be done. Adyen doesn't have to work; it just has to be there.

Ebay in Japan. Japan has laws against counterfeits. Doesn't matter. They just have to be there.

The Arab ststes. Half the population Can't read and write; doesn't matter.

Many warehouses in the states have been shut down by the board of health, because they were filled with items from India. Bug infestations. But ebay's there.

When you want to sell a car, what's the first thing you do? Don't you take out the clutter? Spend as little as you can to clean it up and make it look good?

I didn't read Wenig's contract but I saw a synopsis of it. It said that if Wenig quits or is fired, he has to pay back a substantial amount of his salary and reimburse the company for perks.

The perks alone could wipe him out.

''Let's see. Can't quit. Can't get fired. How else can I get outa this __________?''

I read the article, but all I saw was :
Don't go back to Ebay.
Stay away from Ebay.
Forget about selling on Ebay.

What a garbage site. Have any of you ever tried to filter out certain sellers for the past year? (exclude in search)  The tool is completely broken. Nothing works and there are bugs everywhere in their code due to cheap attempts at making everything cellphone friendly. Raised fees?  HAAA. OK

Ebay doesn't have your financial information.

To sell on ebay, you gave Paypal your financial information, social security number, etc. You didn't give it to ebay.

With Adyen:
You won't be giving your social security number, card number, bank account number to Adyen. You'll be giving it to ebay.

Ebay will give it to Adyen and anyone else they want.

Now if you trust ebay and ebays security, and technical excellence, then jump right in. We can't wait to hear about it.

I'd like know who our peers are to be judged against our business model, we are unique more so than most doing this catagory(used, new, and NOS inventory), of course we are going to be hammered on against the ''new'' only sellers i suspect.   Ebay also needs a change for ''Doesn't work or Defective'',  I can't imagine who dreamed up that reasoning,  we get blasted all the time with these return reasons when it should be only ''defective'' only,  and the buyers click on the doesn't work because they ordered the wrong one(all the time)and now ebay gets the benefit of this one for there own pockets,  we need help with this one ebay,  management thinks they get it right and we are all wrong, we mention it all the time to no avail.  they are making all of us thinking of new venues and that is for sure, you can bank on that,  without sellers,  where is Ebay heading,  might be a fair reason why share holders are losing out,  how many jumped ship,  there is quite a few online options evolving and we are studying them very closely.  Good platform thats managed by algorythms which regulates our sales,  wouldnt it be nice to have open ended bandwidths all day long all over non stop?  Then the ''free returns'' is running rampant,  buyers just luv this,  guess on ordering and change instantly when delivered on our dime, we are in it and we cringe everyday what we are eating on this one,  maybe we will hit 50 out and 50 back at the sametime(new set of goals for us sellers)

Ebay has gone from 97% of our total sales in 2007 to 7% of our total sales now....
i tallied up all 3 selling accounts, and we have sold over 50 Million dollars of merchandise on their site. Soon?? We are going to cut bait completely.
And I am FAR from the only volume seller who is saying this....I hope they rot
