eBay CEO Devin Wenig Horns in on Amazon Prime Day

eBay CEO Devin Wenig is trying to horn in on Amazon Prime Day. This morning, Amazon officially announced the date of its much-anticipated summer shopping event - you can read about its Prime Day plans in this morning's Newsflash article.

Wenig tweeted hours later to say eBay would also host deals that week:

"@eBay will hold large deals events on the week of July 16 to showcase our significant inventory and price advantages. Expect the next wave of our brand and marketing campaign to launch as well."

As we noted on our reporting on the Prime Day announcement this morning, Amazon is focused on showing that not only can it come up with shopping deals, it can also deliver those deals - literally. Two videos show Amazon delivering Prime Day deals to customers by all kinds of vehicles, including Amazon-branded planes.

eBay doesn't have its own logistics operations in the US, but it has been trying to show it can compete with Amazon fast-free shipping by launching the Guaranteed Delivery program, and it continues to pressure sellers to offer Amazon-like policies around shipping and returns.

eBay doesn't mind being compared to its rival - in fact, it posted a recent article from BuzzFeed, "eBay Now Looks a Lot More Like Amazon."

But whether that works as a strategy is another thing. In every press release Amazon issues, it writes the following:

"Amazon is guided by four principles: customer obsession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellence, and long-term thinking."

Meanwhile, eBay stays focused on trying to compete with Amazon.

It will be interesting to see its messaging in its new brand marketing campaign - when you see it land, let us know what you think.

I don't understand WHY Ebay feels it has to compete against AMZ....if anyone, it's Posh and Mercari that they have to compete against.  No one can compete against Amz.  AMZ has prime, Echo, streaming service, delivery service....STOP WITH THE COMPARING WITH AMZ!

I can see why eBay wants to compete with Amazon for some deals day because they do everything that Amazon does. Plus, well, businesses compete.

But eBay's CEO seems confused. eBay doesn't have inventory or logistics, and can't enact any of these resolutions Amazon publishes unless it's on the backs of their sellers.

LOL - I don't think eBay has much to worry about with Poshmark and Mercari save for the used clothing and accessories market, which is probably about 5% of the site. Pre-owned is only 19% of the site at last reporting. All of eBay's worries are pretty much mismanagement.

@Chicago 48 - I seriously doubt that Post and Mercari are any kind of competition to eBay simply because who has heard of them? I think the only time I have seen anything about them is when you have brought them up in various places.

Amazon is not eBay's competitor either as they have no desire to be eBay. I do remember at one point Amazon had auctions and that section whithered away and was chopped. But eBay has gone so afield from what it was and what made it great, they should put the whole place on hold while they get their act together. Decide what kind of marketplace ebay will be and leave the bigwigs in a closed in room with no access to the outside so that their decision on where to take ebay isn't predicated on what Amazon is doing this week. A business shouldn't be making all their meaningful decisions based on another company. They have forgotten that what made them great is that they were unique. No longer now. Unless you are willing to lose your shirt, you can't start an auction at 99 cents. It just isn't worth taking a chance. Ebay has been going downhill for well over 10 years and I haven't seen a thing that would induce me to go back and sell there -- and I miss the excitement of auctions. I miss seeing something that cost me a dime sell for $40. That is what ebay was good at. But instead they trip over themselves trying to pretend they are Amazon when they aren't.

@Moonwishes, there's something called Social Media (Youtube, FB, instagram) and they way that people get the word out about their items is through social media.  Posh doesn't have to advertise because the sellers and buyers advertise for it.  Most "modern" retail sites are like that.  Posh has a HUGE following (sellers and buyers).  Mercari is up and coming.  Again, you won't see TV ads, news ads, probably not even internet ads, because the buyers&sellers advertise through social media.
Go to any forum where sellers and buyers meet and more and more you see Posh and Mercari mentioned.

i wonder if the time will ever come when eBay will be operated by someone who is actually competent, listens carefully to what Sellers have to say and actually know what the heck they are doing. I'm not holding my breath! Delusional Wenig has more personalities than "Sybil" & not a single one has half a brain.

This Looser company and the complete idiots who operate it do NOT have one single original idea on how to profit, other then raising fees for sellers and adding draconian policies to favor ebay,

NEVER buy anything on ebay, until you check other sites,

Amazons Prime Day will be ebays WORST sales day,

@Chicago48 - I certainly know what social media is. My Pinterest site has over 23,000 followers at this point. I go on FB and I don't recall ever seeing anyone anywhere talking about those two places except for you. I even just did some Google exploring to find places to shop on line and I never even saw those two sites mentioned. There are oodles of places that someone can go to buy and sell but most people know ebay and Amazon and some would know about Etzy fas well. Just saying that there are plenty of sites out there that a person can buy or sell on but none currently that are in anyway compeition to ebay.

Chicago - Poshmark and Mercari have a following, but it's a very limited market. For what they are and what they sell, they're great, but they're narrow-spectrum sites. Used clothing and accessories are a TINY fracture of eBay and pretty much nowhere on Amazon.

Walmart, etc., are a lot more of a danger - big market, wide footprint, many new items.

Ina said, "Interesting, @FidoMaster - this current management team is very sensitive - Bob Kupbens blocked @EcommerceBytes on Twitter - a first."

Check out Mr. Kupbens complaining about his flight back from Vegas on Twitter expecting a response from the carrier:

Not
only can Mr. Kupbens not be bothered to respond to a professional blogger/columnist media inquiry, he blocks Ina like a spoiled child.

Hypocritical pathetic leadership, Mr. Kupbens.
