eBay CEO Devin Wenig Horns in on Amazon Prime Day

By: Ina Steiner

eBay CEO Devin Wenig is trying to horn in on Amazon Prime Day. This morning, Amazon officially announced the date of its much-anticipated summer shopping event - you can read about its Prime Day plans in this morning's Newsflash article.

Wenig tweeted hours later to say eBay would also host deals that week:

"@eBay will hold large deals events on the week of July 16 to showcase our significant inventory and price advantages. Expect the next wave of our brand and marketing campaign to launch as well."

As we noted on our reporting on the Prime Day announcement this morning, Amazon is focused on showing that not only can it come up with shopping deals, it can also deliver those deals - literally. Two videos show Amazon delivering Prime Day deals to customers by all kinds of vehicles, including Amazon-branded planes.

eBay doesn't have its own logistics operations in the US, but it has been trying to show it can compete with Amazon fast-free shipping by launching the Guaranteed Delivery program, and it continues to pressure sellers to offer Amazon-like policies around shipping and returns.

eBay doesn't mind being compared to its rival - in fact, it posted a recent article from BuzzFeed, "eBay Now Looks a Lot More Like Amazon."

But whether that works as a strategy is another thing. In every press release Amazon issues, it writes the following:

"Amazon is guided by four principles: customer obsession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellence, and long-term thinking."

Meanwhile, eBay stays focused on trying to compete with Amazon.

It will be interesting to see its messaging in its new brand marketing campaign - when you see it land, let us know what you think.

Wenig's desperately timed pronouncment - he must have wet his drawers waiting for Amazon's reveal - is actually quite and transparently pitiful.

The only 'innovations' eBay has managed to attempt have either been blatently plagerized 'ideas' or pasta tossed experiments that so far have resulted in little more than monitized splat stains on practically every page.  Which apparently they now need user's 'help' to even notice, despite over a decade of such being repeatedly 'voiced' via countless means.

He speaks of 'significance' and 'vastness'; the first empty air, and the latter only true if referencing either the number of Chinese duplicated listings of trinkets and counterfeits, or the unprecented number of geometrically increasing technical 'boo-boos' unexpected of even an amaturely developed gaming ap.

And speaking of gaming, et.al., AZ Prime offers much more than just 'stuff' at true discount, there is also a vast array of aps, music, media and service elements eBay hasn't yet even been artificially intelligent or capable enough to copycat.  Because as has been stated numerous times, eBay owns nothing, sells nothing (except a service they pick and chose not to provide at a whim), ships nothing, and produces nothing themselves, except anxiety, fraud, and empty promises.

And their 'brand'?  It's been disruptivated into the laughingstock of eCommerce now.  One quarter at a time.

Oh, what might have been.....

Ina:
From his tweet..."Expect the next wave of our brand and marketing campaign to launch as well."
What a perfect example of meaningless nebulous & amorphous foreshadowing.
Furthermore...when did ebay acquire a "brand'?
Any description of ebay proper will never be prefaced by "the"...a simple "a" works in all cases.

Thriftyone, be sure to click ''Show additional replies, including those that may contain offensive content'' below Wenig's tweet.

Wenig (or one of his crack social team lemmings) has apparently been flagging my retweets and replies as offensive to have them removed or hidden (so that the general public and $EBAY investors don't see them).

Gee, I wonder why @eBayForBusiness stopped tweeting the hashtag #eBayOpen...

Wenig and his CxO/SVP/VP ''leadership'' team needs a hot Brazilian ''3G-Way'' enima.

eBay needs to be rebuilt with executive talent and bench strength from the top-down. The massive layoffs, to the best of my knowledge, did not include any eBay executives. This needs to change Q3.

Thomas J. Tierney stop abdicating your responsibilities and the laissez-faire deference to Wenig and take action to turn this sinking, glitch-ridden ship around!

I do believe you are wrong about no executives being laid off, however Wenig did not get rid of any of his cronies, just the good ones that were actually helpful and useful.

Bobbie Kupcake = Jose Mallabo!

The truth hurts, Bobbie! You and Devin are abysmal failures and wannabe tin horn dictators. You can't STAND the truth!

Gawd, I hope you're both history before fall.

However, you'd fit right in in Washington.

So Kupbens once again shows he cannot stand any criticism of his work or decisions??  Should have seen that coming when he walked out of that chat after 15 minutes when he first started with Ebay because he did not like the tone or the content of the questions.  He looked like a huge fool then and has once again stepped into the fools spotlight.  Did he really think that pre-screening the questions was going to make the after comments any easier?

This man is nothing but an idiot that has no comprehension of just how bad things are on ebay, but now he actually has the nerve to post an apology for all the glitches that have been happening and promising that a new team will be looking and testing things before they are uploaded to the site.  Problem is Bobby, that costs money and Ebay has no desire to spend any of that correcting all the cheap crappy programming that they have continually paid for in the past few years while refusing to spend any money on Beta Testing it.

Anybody want to bet how long that team lasts before they are fired as scapegoats for Wenig and kupbens useless management skills??  Here is the link for the posted announcement from Ebay...roflmao

Still
can't wait to see how Kupbens handles the questions at Ebay Open about the other executive that Ebay either drove off or laid off.  That is going to be a really fun topic at Ebay Open Bobby boy.

Ina, disappointing to hear that Kupbens (@bob_k) would block @EcommerceBytes in a petulant fit.

I'll speculate that he's butthurt over ECBs truthful and accurate coverage of the many significant eBay site issues and glitches plaguing users (particularly sellers) for these many months.

Perhaps he kept these problems buried and wrote them off to his superiors as "just the usual complaints from sellers", when reporting up to Cutler and Wenig, and now he's having to own it?

Either way, when Cutler blathered on at the Merrill Lynch conference (in the midst of many of these significant site issues), he was either ignorant or full of hubris to characterize eBay as "the best technology company out there "(when compared to Amazon or Walmart).

Cutler has probably taken plenty of slaps for that, and perhaps the kicks have rolled downhill to Kupbens?

SIK, I don't see any changes in the eBay leadership team page, save for the _additions_ of Patt and Rawasdeh to the executive team after Steve Fisher was put in charge of payments and demoted and defrocked of his CTO title.

I'm sure some (possibly very talented) middle managers (including department directors) were eliminated during the headcount reductions, but I don't see any cuts from the corporate executive team (meaning VP and above)?

PS: No special insight, but it's quite common for layoffs to come in waves. If I were at eBay I'd be working on my resume and have a backup plan. Just a thought.

Believe me there either is or will be as I am aware of the person who is either no longer there or not going to be there much longer and they were at least a VP last i knew.  Ebay does not want anything about this layoff out there as they still have not publicly announced it like most public companies would have.  I keep my promises and until this person makes the announcement public or gives me permission to disclose it,  I will keep it private also.

For those that know this person I think it will come as a bit of a shock,.

@FidoMaster

I just looked at your link and that doesn't even show Kupbens as an Executive at Ebay so that listing only shows SENIOR VP and above not VP and above and when I look at that listing Kupbens isn't on the list either and unfortunately we all know he is still there.  I also looked at another listing of executives and Kupbens is not on that one either but I will admit I am not sure of his title.  There are actually a few people missing from the list of VP's so as usual, Ebay puts out a faulty product that cannot be relied on, or it is telling us what is coming up, like Bobby Cupcakes is the next fall guy for Wenigs failures.  I notice that Patt is on that list of executives and that both he and Kupbens signed that document of apology from Ebay.

@Ina  Maybe that is why Kupbens blocked you from his Twitter account, maybe he is not going to be there much longer or may have gotten his walking papers also since he is not listed as an executive anywhere now.

@SIK, I hope things work out okay for your friend (they're better off out of eBay in any event). It's not far-fetched to imagine someone that felt (and spoke up) that there were better alternatives to the direction Wenig's attempting to steer the ship would get clipped.

Since these site issues have been going on for months It's interesting though that Kupben's is the one made to publicly take the fall on his sword over the myriad of site glitches with the video and posted co-authored apology. I bet Steve Fisher is breathing a sigh of relief in his little payments-only hidey-hole.

Makes one wonder though who really has ownership (and more importantly accountability) for the functioning of the ''tech'' in the self-proclaimed world-class technology company that is eBay?

Happy 4th!

#FidoMaster

I think the fact that Ebay left that position empty says it all about who has accountability, NOBODY.  If I was Fisher I would have my resume out also as all he did was get transferred into the area that I think everybody knows Ebay is going to fail at and Fisher is going to be the perfect fall guy.  All Wenig has to say is that all the site glitches happened on his watch so he was given a second assignment that he should have been able to handle and didn't so he goes bye bye and Wenig has his scapegoat.  But I think if Ebay does not turn something around quickly that Wenig is going to be gone anyway as he has done nothing other than cash in on the stock when Ebay managed to artificially inflate it with all of their smoke and mirrors and as soon as both he and Fisher cashed in on all the options they had and sold it off the stock started dropping and has not recovered yet.

Funny how Wenig and Fisher happened to sell at the peak of Ebays stock price, kind of makes you wonder if they knew what was going to happen and used a little bit of insider information to cash in while they could.  I would not be surprised if that was brought up by somebody during the mysteriously silent Q & A session of that meeting,  I guess unless the questions are pre-screened and the answers all written out for them, Ebay could not take the chance on them embarrassing themselves and Ebay any worse than they already have.  Wenigs tweet about Ebay launching a new marketing campaign during Prime week says enough about what happens when he is left to his own resources.

Evidently Kupbens has been determined expendable or I don't think he would have been the one to make that announcement nor signed that statement.  That basically makes him look like the person who should have been reporting the errors and did not take care of business.  Whether he is or not remains to be seen, but he is being made to stand up and basically take the hit.

As you said though, Cutler probably knows now that he made a complete fool of himself with that speech about how great of a Technology company Ebay is.  I am also guessing that the glitches are no where near done as that would put Wenigs plans to far off track time wise and he would not be able to survive as  you cannot go from no Beta Testing to top notch overnight.  Ebay just does not have the personnel on staff to do so, nor in my opinion the staffing to even begin to develop that type of department.

What few programmers Ebay has are still fixing all the previous glitches, including many store owners not being able to order their FREE shipping supplies this quarter because of another glitch that does not allow them to access the page where they get their code to enter for payment for the quarter.  There are already a lot of threads about that issue now and it appears Ebay is stating that July 31st is the expected fix date.  So that small issue of some Sellers not being able to access a page in Manage My Store is going to take a full month to fix?  I can only imagine how long the more difficult fixes are going to take, let alone how long it will take to Beta Test all the additional changes that Ebay has lined up.

Oh well, Happy 4th everybody !!!

With eBay OPEN (CLOSED) only a few weeks away, one wonders how they will spin all this.

Of course Bobby Cupcakes (Bob Kupbens mafia name) is mia on the list - hes probably going to be the fall guy at some point for all the failures .....

As for blocking ECB - petulant child - I wouldnt loose sleep over it - I hope Ina doesnt.

eBay is simply circling the wagons - trying to control the message that "there is no iceberg up ahead".

Its all about keeping the Titanic/Lucitania/Morre Castle/Andre Doria/QE1 afloat. As long as theres no major meltdown that shows up in the local or national news - its all ok.

Any glitch is a test. Any layoffs are a tightening and correcting the budget via overemployment thats not needed - everything is spin. Meanwhile things continue on as always.

eBay isnt worried and never has been about seller exodus. They pay and keep well the few hundred/thousand sellers that they need, that they rely on, that pay the bills - and the rest can go suck it.

CS workers read the script, tell you im sorry, and debit your account - 'cause why not. You WILL PAY the various VIG's - ON TIME EVER TIME AND SHUT UP ABOUT IT ... or we come back at night and burn down your store aka hide your listings. Simple mafia 101 behavior.

Circling back - eBay OPEN should be a RIOT - cause theres not much to say. Pictures of middle aged women in weird hats eating food at a buffet ISNT ecommerce news  (those comments based on pics eBay posted previously).

CES is free, NY NOW is free, Toy Fair is free, SEMA is free - why isnt eBay CLOSED?

Why make it in Vega in JULY/AUGUST (hottest time of the year?)

Why not specifically invite a hundred or so disenfranchised sellers and "get them back on board" by helping them instead of taking random people (in)?

Yeh, lets see what eBay does PRIME DAY - I can always use a good laugh.

eBay is every bit a brand just like Amazon is.

When sellers are just product fulfillers for eBay you'll really be complaining!

eBay will sell products and ask YOU to fulfill the order, if you can't someone else will. . .

Seller ID's will be hidden from buyers and eBay will be the record of sale for everything sold on eBay.

BIG changes are coming!

Tool..something (cant think of what to say here)

1) when people think of the "eBay brand" they think of theft, fraud, crime, coercion, illegalities and more - not something Id want associate with MY brand. Most manufacturers hate eBay - Ive been to enough CES, Toy Fairs and NY Nows to have seen it and heard it FIRST HAND. People like TWICE and Dealerscope ignore eBay - and with good reason. They may have billions in sales but people just hate them.

2) "eBay will sell products and ask YOU to fulfill the order, if you can't someone else will" ... eBay cant SELL anything - unless they have their own listings - which they dont. They cant even get their catalog straight. eBay owns, sells, ships, supplies, and creates nothing. FBE is a pipe dream - eBay doesnt have the ability to manage such an outlay - look at what it does to Amazon.
Your assertion is based on .... nothing.

3) "Seller ID's will be hidden from buyers and eBay will be the record of sale for everything sold on eBay." They may try such a move but that would run counter to MANY state and Federal laws - considering their TOS/UA not to mention their 10k statements say otherwise. Oh yeh - so do their statements to the many courts they were sued in. As well - when they DO become merchant of record - the taxes are "on them". Of course they will lie about it - but thats how it works. Why do you think eBay begged its sellers to write to DC to stop it? They DONT want all the responsibilities - just the title and the money. But since they go hand in hand ....

eBay cant stop sellers who ship goods from putting in paperwork, supplying discounts tied to their own websites and verbiage in listings etc - they can try but it will never work.

Your thoughts may be a DREAM of Wenigs - but it wont happen.

It would be nice for eBay to have an original idea! But the great sellers here are holding this company up.

This may be a bit off topic but I had to buy a couple things that I was not in a rush for: Brita Water Filters & some mascara.
I did price shopping and the eBay sellers consistantly came in less expensive than Amazon. These were new items and sealed.
Brita came in almost 40% less and the make up - $29.00 for one on Amazon and 3 for $18.00 on eBay.
I don't sell or buy on Amazon but I do on eBay.
I can't stand the glitches, the crazy fee structure, the RULES which never end. But one more push from eBay that costs me more money as a seller, and as much as the sellers save me money, if eBay continues down this path, they will lose both sides of my business. So in essence I am saying that for every seller, the seller is a buyer so acts as 2 customers on eBay and if they lose one, they will lose the other.

eBay is not just copying Amazon, but they are literally pirating Amazon's advertising believing that eBay will get the exposure hanging on to Amazon's coattails . Its down and dirty and I don't think I have even seen the likes of this even at the retail level.

Jeesh, I can't even get the little ditty from Walmart out of my head. I am now starting to check Walmart's delivery and prices.

eBay really needs to do some advertising. And let the sellers run their sales!!!
