eBay Runs Dedicated Brand Sale for Adidas

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay is running a 60% off sale on Adidas branded goods, but it appears all of the items featured in the sale are sold by Adidas itself (user name adidas_official). After clicking around, we couldn't find listings from any third-party sellers included in the sale.

The impact of a dedicated brand sale on sellers is a kind of glass-half-full/empty argument. Some would argue that by sending an email to users featuring a 60% discount on a popular brand will get people to click through to the site. They would argue that even though shoppers will only be browsing through listings sold by Adidas, getting people to visit eBay will ultimately benefit all sellers.

Others would argue that a dedicated brand sale hurts every other seller since they're getting no exposure when shoppers click through to the pages featuring the brand.

There's actually another argument - some might say such a deep discount harms brand integrity. While Adidas can move a lot of inventory this way, it's not clear it's the best strategy for a brand to teach shoppers to expect deeply discounted inventory. And after all, brands are the ones restricting retailers from advertising below MAP prices - they usually want to maintain suggested retail pricing.

eBay often promotes sales that benefit only a select number of sellers through its eBay Deals program. But featuring a single brand's listings signals an approach we may see more of as eBay tries to attract more brands to its marketplace.

As usual, another half-baked announcement.
Key: "up to..."
1st page has 72 listings highlighted...many are under 50%, many with 0% off.

This also may be what eBay meant when they said they were changing into a site for Brands which is pretty ominous for Small Sellers.

If they can convince enough ''Brands'' to let eBay run a direct sales operation for them, then they have leverage to continue to squeeze small sellers out or make them give up more and more of their profits by increasing performance metrics, which translates into increased fees  that ''brands'' won't have to comply with.

Adidas looks like it it's transacting 30,000-40,000 or more transactions a month judging by their feedback volume.

The Reputation of Adidas is not all that hot with a 98.3%.  This also brings back rumors of the User Feedback ratings disappearing.

It seems very short sighted by the Adidas. Even if the products were closeouts or excess stock, I'm sure it's large reseller channel members would have appreciated extra discounts to run sales.

Part of the big transform?

Adidas is one of eBays most act Vero members - there’s your connection.

On eBay nothing is random, by chance or by mistake.

I “guess we should all be thankful “ that eBay’s just running a special sale and not giving us (us = any one who sells Adidas)  the Skullcandy/Denon treatment. THAT itreatmeny is where the maker gets a platinum store and then gets Vero to kick anyone selling those brands via fake takedowns.

Sigh, another eBay scam against smaller sellers

"There's actually another argument - some might say such a deep discount harms brand integrity."
In this day and age it doesn't matter about deep discounts.  Every brand does it except the luxury designer brands.  I'll know not to buy or source Adidas to resell.  And as more brands get in the mix with Ebay, I'll steer clear of those brands too.
As a reseller&sourcer of goods, I notice that some brands (because of oversaturation in the 1st and 2ndary markets) aren't holding their value -- until you get to the luxury point.  For example, Ralph Lauren & Chaps.  There's so much Ralph Lauren in the thrift stores and being discounted at Macys and Marshalls, that brand has lost its value.  The same with Michael Kors, not his collection line, but the regular line.  I see so many Michael Kors shoes in DSW and in the thrift stores.  This is what the luxury brand names were afraid of -- the race to the bottom and that's why most of them don't have stores on AMZN and Ebay.

After all the slaps in the face that small sellers have received since Donahoe's time, and they seem to get worse every day, if you haven't figured out that eBay does not want you and if you haven't developed a presence elsewhere, you might want to begin.

There are always those who come here and say "it's eBay's playground". Well yes it is, but small sellers pay store fees and they expect visibility for that.  If eBay does not give that,in my mind that is unethical, dishonest, and I might go as far as to say criminal.   Not only do they pay store fees they don't get to negotiate lower final value fees or other perks.  Therefore, small sellers are subsidizing these "big boys" and the small sellers get little or nothing for it.

Look for more of these sales from the brands on eBay, and mark my words, your branded items of the same won't see the light of day while these sales are on.

Empty suit Wenig has made it clear-- he IS NOT reconnecting with small sellers.

There is another way to look at this. Take of family of four or five. Needing shoes. Contrary to what the media wants one to believe there are families that are still having problems putting food on the table. They save money where ever they can. The kids need shoes. Family goes to ebay and sees a up to 60 percent savings from adias. They buy. They don't care about any seller on ebay nor do they care about feedback or whining about how unfair ebay is to them. All they know is they are saving money on shoes for the kids. This family only wants to get a buy on shoes. Without a doubt large sellers do have an advantage on pricing as they can buy in very large quantities for discounts. But if you are selling the same thing as these guys you are failing only because you insist on selling it. Get something else to sell.

sasikat9 is right...Baby Needs New Shoes. I am that family of four. I was able to buy "a few pairs of shoes" and pay some bills when as a Top Rated Seller my eBay items actually showed up in search and were selling. No longer TRS as of June 1 as I refuse to offer 30 day returns with free return shipping. Looks/Watchers/Sales dwindling. Impending eBay take over of payments going to be a complete mess in July. Paying eBay around $200.00 a month for fees and lucky if I can pay a bill or two and transfer some cash to my bank account from Paypal with ebay sales. Depressing.

sasikat9, very noble post, but if you think for one second that anything eBay does is to help the poor or the struggling, well, think again.  Look what they have done to small sellers--destroyed their businesses. Many of those small sellers used eBay to augment their incomes to put food on the table, help pay for their children's education, and pay for steep prescription prices.

eBay looks out for eBay's own pocket to ensure that Wenig gets his enormous salary and stock options.

I do like your humanitarian thinking, but it in no way aligns with the eBay that I know.  They've given me enough examples over the years to beg to differ with you.

@rexford

No where in my statement did I condone what ebay does or doesn't do. What I said was that their are families struggling to feed the family and a 60% discount on shoes helps them. You have to be on another planet if you think that these families care about you or your problems with ebay. All they want is to buy some shoes for the kids. So I'm not sure where you think I'm condoning anything ebay does. Actually I'm glad that they give these families the chance to save some money. I was in their shoes a few years back so I know what it is like. So if you have a problem with they way ebay operates you have a choice. Leave or ajust to it. These families don't care one red cent about you especially when your prices are higher.

eh ... the Adidas gig is eBay trying to move from c2c into the b2c space.

The days of eBay creating jobs (sellers) and boosting anyone's economy (except China) are LONG over (if you believe "the cupcake" or any of his minions .... = )

Sellers complain because they have been hurt and stolen from, not because they have nothing else to do or are bored. We expect "just a little service" for the money we pay - is that so wrong?

@sasikat9 - I am very receptive to the needs of families who have trouble buying necessities each month with limited funds, as that was my story in the not so distant past. But I have to ask, why would a family who is looking for children's shoes be buying them on eBay, or anywhere on the internet? Wouldn't a more logical solution be to go to the nearest DSW, WSS or Payless, where the children could actually try on the shoes? And probably pay less money? And please don't think that eBay cares about the plight of low income families; they're only interested in funding future golden parachutes.

Speaking of Adyen...it's curious that their IPO soared today, while ebay stock was down 2.77%. ebay volume today was almost double the daily average of the last 3 weeks, with 20+ trades of over 100,000 shares.
