What Payments Will Look Like on eBay

By: Ina Steiner

Paying for items on eBay will soon be more like Amazon than the traditional eBay model: instead of paying sellers, buyers will pay eBay, and then it will disburse the funds to sellers.

During a webinar to answer seller questions last week, eBay executives provided a preview of what that will look like in a series of three slides, which we've mashed together:

eBay noted there would be a streamlined buyer experience with an increased choice in payment options that would be "locally relevant" and "mobile-optimized." The new experience will roll out to a very small number of users beginning this year, and will be implemented fully by 2021.

In the screenshots, eBay showed the transaction flow for a memory foam mattress pad for a bed. The "buyer" chose to use Apple Pay to pay with their Visa credit card - note that Apple Pay isn't a payment method - it's a digital wallet that stores a person's payment methods such as debit and credit cards.

On the sample screenshot, it shows the checkout screen with a total amount next to the words "PAY EBAY." The final screenshot showed a "thank you" page showing the order details along with a "Continue shopping" button.

You can find more information about the webinar (along with readers' reactions) on this March 7th blog post.

I just finished moving the last of my items. Almost a thousand various items.

I am ready to promote myself and the new site.
And I already see the views coming in.

I can already see it.

eBay won't even show WHO the seller is!

They're going to pretend that the merchandise is THEIRS. . .

I think this stinks because Paypal works great for me and never causes any problems.  I worry about my combined shipping deal and if it will still work.  But more importantly I would rather get paid right away with Paypal and then withdraw right away if I want to.  I'm wondering 2 questions right away: So will there still be auctions?  Will there be a shopping cart?

I just thought of something else important.  If people win auctions, then does their money get shifted to the seller's bank account?  Another words; will this new payment system put an end to people winning auctions and not paying?  That would be a great change if this puts an end to non-payers.  Non paying buy it now winners as well

ebay's game plan is both diabolical and paradoxical...
It intends to make more money by inviting sellers to make less money.
Hopefully, paypal will champion a viable alternative when their shackles are finally loosened.

Yes the days of having your seller name shown will soon be gone

We are in business for ourselves and that means growing our brand, and it's a very important part of business, we will continue to do this, thru our own venues, and we will continue to operate how we want, take whatever payments we decide is right for us, like paypal, and make policies that are right for us,

ebay has stepped over the red line ,  they want it all, but without the risk,, we might still run limited google ad's on ebay this year, but I think the listing / selling will be done soon

@Ebay Seller-Ebay Buyer

The answer to all of your questions is we just don't know yet.  Ebay has not released ANY details yet.  Only generalized statements.  They are months away from launching this for about 5% of sellers later this year, so they are not done with designing the program.  What you are reading on these blogs are other posters opinions, fears and guesses on what Ebay will be doing.

BTW they have said that we will still be able to accept PP even when they bring their own payment processing online.  I mean we have to give buyers the option of paying via Ebay, but we can also give them other options as well or so they are saying.  PP is the only other payment method they have named that we can accept, but there apparently is some other method of methods coming.  It will be interesting to see what it is.  Heck it will be interesting to get more details on this whole program.  But I suspect it will be awhile before we have any answers from Ebay.

Article begins with "Paying for items on eBay will soon be more like Amazon "

And that's really all you need to know.  "No original idea ever eBay" are dying for Amazon to swoop them up so Wenig and his pals can cash in big.  Everything they do mirrors Amazon.

The day eBay went public was the day they said to hell with the sellers who built them.

There are a few important issues that eBay AGAIN refuses to answer.

I doubt anyone cares (1) iota who process the payments as long as its fair, equitable and transparent ... all things eBay is known NOT to be.

Looking at eBays TOS, tells you all you need to know about how this will work - eBay will stretch the rubber band as much as they can - break/bend as many laws as they can - and sellers will just have to take it.

Rex (whos %101 right) quoted eBays understanding of ecommerce - ape Amazon - BUT - eBay always likes to go 1 stedp farther to "prove it was THEIR idea" and not Amazon - and thats whats scary.

I can live with taking money out every 2 days, I can live with eBay taking its fees out right away (I have to pay them anyway and its what I do with Amazon) .. the issue is (for me anyway) what OTHER nasty tricks does eBay have that its still hidding?????

Will they use it to force sellers to warranty goods for 60 days? 30 days?
Will they use it for force 30 day returns?
Will they force it to block certain items/brands?
Will they hold it in case of VERO issues (which most times are lies)?

eBay is the LOWEST of the low - but sometimes you have no choice and you must make a deal with the devin ... i mean devil.

I understand they are running a business, I understand they want to grab that extra %1 on billions of dollars of transactions - I understand it all - I just dont understand eBays zeal to steal from its sellers (at a rate that would make Al Capone blush).

They will still have Paypal available BUT

If the buyer chooses eBay's payment processer than Paypal, your money is in eBay's hands and not directly into your Paypal account.

I just got out of a site that went to an in-house payment and Paypal. I never chose their payment and guess what. I had a sale that I couldn't figure out where the money is. Yes, it was in this site's in-house payment and they won't release it unless I give them my banking and checking account. (my shop showed Paypal) It's a small amount and I made sure the customer got their item, but I got the shop emptied and very little personal information left until they do something.

Sorry, I just don't like the fact that all these sites (especially let's hack ebay) want your banking information. I want one or two "professional" money transmitters that have minimum amount of information.
My bank requires minimum amounts to just have a bank account. (And I don't to hear people say, open one at another bank. Why, that bank would like to see your other accounts there, too and then the cost of new checks and such.)

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

If ebay follows Amazon, your money is held for two weeks and they deposit into your bank account. This will be a problem for many. Amazon sales run about 40 to 1 on ebay. Ebay has become a after thought since sales have dropped, and I mean dramatically. Who are they trying to kid? This is going to benefit ebay and nobody else. Where are the sales ebay? No more excuses.

I believe that Amazon is going against a lot of the states Money Transmitters rules. What I remembered that most states were well under 7 days to get your money and if Amazon is holding onto sellers money longer, they can be find.
Sellers should check their states Transmitters law and then file complaints.

I see a couple of ECB readers / posters has stated that seller names will disappear with the new format.

NOT. GONNA. HAPPEN.

They are just showing examples of what the new pay format may look like.

Since when does eBay (or Amazon) not show the User ID and feedback record of the seller?

And if they do not show the name of the business one would be purchasing from, how would a prospective buyer know who they are dealing with? And are they a TRS or TRS+ seller?

We all know eBay has a (well-earned) reputation for messing up any new program which comes along, and with this comes the assumptions that they are going to radically change things.

One thing for sure, Pierre invented feedback, is very passionate about including it on eBay, and will not just let it go away. Isn't he still the largest shareholder of this company??

@eXtinctBay - I believe people are assuming seller names are going away since they will be telling buyers to PAY EBAY, which makes it appear as though eBay is the seller. If they do away with sellers' names it would probably be less confusing since a buyer who doesn't keep up with what's going on behind the scenes, might be concerned that they are purchasing from Seller XYZ, but paying eBay.

eBay and Paypal are cut from same cloth; extreme caution should be used when using either company.

When they were one entity, eBay benefitted from one of Paypal's sidelines in making money: payment holds/seizures for the most spurious reasons.  Now they have split, that strategy has become more and more aggressive and eBay were feeling the brunt of it with more and more sellers going to the wall and more and more buyers having bad experiences with Paypal.  Did you not notice eBay's language in the email notifying users of its switch to Adyen? Users will supposedly have "....more predictable access to funds....."

eBay are aware that Paypal's current favoured modus operandi is the seizure/lengthy holding of funds to be a loaner to those using Paypal Working Capital and Paypal Credit and to report false "growth" statistics.  In fact, Dan Schulman is quoted as saying that the back end processing moving to Adyen is "not that profitable".

Let's be clear, these payment holds/seizures by Paypal are only going to get worse now that users globally won't have to use Paypal on eBay anymore and Paypal will feel pressured into continuing to report fake growth figures in an attempt to prove that it does not eBay.  eBay served as a trap to provide Paypal with users/accounts and now Paypal won't have that reservoir anymore.  Those of you lamenting the demise of Paypal on eBay should consider that.

Search "Paypal" in Youtube and scroll down to Minnie Smalls' video.  Read the horror stories in the comments including the guy that was rendered bankrupt after $178,000 was seized.  Paypal are looking for any excuse to hold funds, married name changes, sales spikes, the vague "unusual" actvity, name not the exactly matching your ID (eg, your name is "Greg William Smith", but you've always been known as "William Smith" because you hate the name "Greg") Also, if you have time to go through the thousands of comments, you will also see ex-Paypal employees confirming that Paypal are just waiting for you to slip up so that they can pounce on your money.

I consider eBay and Paypal as bad as each other.  You need to watch out for both of them.
