New Head of eBay Seller Experience Details Major Changes

eBay's new Vice President of Seller Experience Harry Temkin revealed in an interview on Wednesday changes that will be coming to the marketplace and described how they will impact sellers.

eBay CEO Devin Wenig brought his former colleague from Thomson Reuters on board last month as he tries to revive growth.

With a background in financial information and technology, Temkin is tasked with helping Wenig achieve his vision of a more powerful central dashboard for sellers, called Seller Hub.

Temkin envisions sellers viewing their listings in Seller Hub with realtime pricing data on one side and promoted listing settings on the other - and it's easy to see why. Amazon's marketplace success is in part due to fluid product pricing, but it also makes it an incredibly competitive place on which to sell. And making it easier for sellers to pay-for-play increases eBay's take rate.

Here are changes Temkin announced:

Multiple Top Pick (MTP)
eBay already provides pricing guidance, but MTP takes it further. eBay will display off-eBay "web-based" prices of products (low, mid, high), and it will display prices for the top 5 comparable products on eBay (taking into account sellers' policies). MTP is launching to a limited audience starting this week with a full rollout next year.

Price-too-high Notifications and Adjustments
Temkin wants a mechanism to inform sellers in realtime if their product prices aren't comparable to other prices (on or off eBay), and give sellers the ability to either have eBay adjust the price for them, or reduce prices themselves in bulk by a set percentage relative to the prices eBay found.

Seller Initiated Offers
Sellers will be able to initiate an offer to anyone who is watching their listings.

Buyer Initiated Offers
Buyers will be able to initiate an offer to sellers. For example, Product X is listed by multiple sellers at $50. A buyer willing to pay $45 will be able to send a notification to those sellers asking if any would be willing to sell at the lower price.

Listing 1.0
Some of the features eBay foists on consumer sellers will be available as options to business sellers. For example, sellers will be able to choose to automatically relist items that don't sell at a pre-determined lower price or with the Best Offer feature.

Multi-user Access and Authentication
eBay will roll out multi-user access and authentication sometime in the first three months of 2019. This allows an eBay seller to give employees partial or full access to their account.

Social Sharing from Seller Hub
eBay made it easier for sellers to socially share listings using eBay's mobile app, and it will extend that functionality to Seller Hub.

Seller Protections
eBay will work on seller trust issues in 2019 - "As the head of seller experience, it's my job to protect you as the seller," Temkin said. "It's a high priority to add more seller protections."

Temkin's presentation indicates more fluid pricing and paid promoted listings are priorities for eBay in the year ahead.

"Multi-user Access and Authentication"

I belong to a local online seller meetup group and this item met with a lot of positive comments last night.  Many of our sellers outsource some of their work, or would like to hire help, and this will make it easier for them to farm out some of the more tedious portions of selling on eBay. This change was long overdue.

Ebay will probably be changing minimum price from .99 back to .01 soon. Imagine the boost in sales!

Okay well the first ''major'' change has arrived.

They changed the logo to all red!!   (WOW)

The PROBLEM with ebay is becoming more and more obvious. The CEOs salary should absolutely be tied to increase in sales. If sales increase only 5% Year over year, he takes a pay cut.  If 30% he gets an increase. (kinda like us sellers get)

They HAVE the tools and info to help us, yet they don't seem to like making money.

If, for example, they would show the page views on unsold, that could help. Instead of the idiotic ''promoted listings'' banner, they should replace that with  ''HEY SELLER!!  Your item is not getting seen, lower your price a bit this time!!''

They did tell us to lower our prices on some items, stating that another seller had sold one for a bit less...

LIES. Some of the items I looked at are unique. NO ONE has had one up there for 6 months. NO COMPLETED, NO SOLD.  So of course, we now ignore all of that erroneous info.

They already HAVE this info. Tell us, help us, and we all make more. And if the CEO's salary is tied directly to volume and sales, this stuff would stop.

Starting my 1st listings with that red logo glaring.
I can honestly say it's both distracting and annoying.

The old multi-color wasn't even an afterthought.

Yeah, what's up with the all red logo? Multicolor eBay is now all red lowercase ebay. Nothing 'pops' there.

I just saw the new red logo. So much for "fill your cart with color." I wonder if the change is a nod to China since red is often associated with communism.

As one other poster stated, EBay has become a big fiasco since Donahoe took over for Whitman.  Sellers have been leaving since then and there has been a mass exodus of good sellers.  As others have mentioned, it is the sellers (ultimately) that bring the products and pay the fees to support the site.  Yes, you need buyers to buy, but without sellers you can guarantee there will be no buyers and no revenue stream for eBay.  EBay has treated sellers woefully and the harm (yes, harm) caused to many sellers and their reputations leave a bitter taste in their mouth, so bad it will last in their memories forever.  Many of the sellers that left, left a hole in eBay (which eBay refuses to admit or apologize for).  Smaller sellers with unique and harder to find items have gone and mass liquidators, Goodwill, drop shippers and China is (for the most part) all that remain.  For me, it I want the newest widget......I have so many options, I compare and price shop.  So, if you want to compete in ONLY that arena (which it seems what eBay wants to do) you have to be the LOWEST PRICE.  This to many is a race to the bottom and since eBay doesn't own the merchandise on its site or house items in distribution centers, eBay is ill equipped to compete.  Putting downward pressure on sellers to race to the bottom to compete against Amazon or even Walmart is just an unrealistic business model for eBay.

As far as this new guy, based on his credentials, I would say he is ill equipped.  His rhetoric sounds like sounds just like the spin Wenig puts on eBay and changes and it goes to say that NEITHER OF THEM are listening to what sellers with decades of experience are telling them.  I am sure they think they are "mavericks", but in truth they are just rogue.

''eBay revenue has more then DOUBLED since Meg Whitman left. . . .''

Do you ever actually check facts before spewing such nonsense?

eBay's posted revenue for 2007 was $7.672B, equivalant to $7.831B in today's dollars.  For 2017 it was $10.567.  That's nowhere near being ''doubled''.

Also, eBay has significantly increased seller fees, added seller fees that didn't exist in 2007. (e.g. Ship cost FVF), and has monitized advertising, established monthly 'store' fees, and has realized revenue from such nefarious schemes like paying for CS that should be included.  Soon you can add managed payment 'fees' to that.

Clearly, their revenue 'growth' can not be attributed wholly to any increase in sales, which is the point here is it not?  And any increase in sales or sales volume that isn't a cooked book entry is thanks more to the sellout to the PRC than increase from the rest of their seller 'foundation'.

Those kind of windbag pronouncements might serve to fool those walking the street, but not the folks who actually live there.

Well, not all of them at least.

In 2017 eBay NO longer owned Paypal

Here's the data I used for my statement:

ual-net-revenue/

As
shown by this chart John Donahoe grew eBay way more then Meg Whitman did. . . .Don't get me wrong, I like Meg way more then I do John but the fact is he brought in the CASH then she did!

My response to deejae137 was to this:

"As one other poster stated, EBay has become a big fiasco since Donahoe took over for Whitman".

So my research data was for when John Donahoe was running eBay which didn't include years of which Wenig has been at the helm.

Donahoe "DOUBLED" eBay's revenue over Meg Whitman and that's a FACT.

So in response to your statement:
"Do you ever actually check facts before spewing such nonsense?"

YES, I did do my research. . . .Did you do yours? ? ?

PS: eBay's revenue has dropped since Wenig took over because eBay no longer owns PAYPAL. . . .

I don't understand how the offer would work, if the buyer can send an offer to 10 sellers and all 10 agree does that mean the buyer is now obligated to purchase all 10 because the way it is now if a seller has best offer and it's accepted it's SOLD.

Also, the part about sellers initiating an offer to watchers...do they realize MOST watchers are a waste of time..it's usually other sellers wanting to see if the first seller gets their price for the item. I can just see all the happy watchers getting messages saying....please buy...they already get pissy when some sellers send reminders for feedback etc.

As for items being priced to high...they quote Amazon as an example of a working system....sure, I've seen 2 page leaflets listed for $1000 on amazon and $20 books for 1 penny....so...are we supposed to start selling our products for a penny, it's not worth my time since I charge exact shipping I would lose a LOT of money.

If I'm supposed to be responsible for all my listings and have to suffer a negative when a buyer said he wasn't happy that a magazine only had 3 pages on the cover story...then I want control over what is in my listings and that includes price

I wanted to vent about all the changes I've had to spend time revising on my listings since 2007-first Canadians could list without shipping charges, then we had to insert those-mostly by guessing since we couldn't weigh everything. Next came photo size, had to redo all the cover/gallery photos, then changing to Cdn currency-had to do each listing separately-took from March until August and was unable to list anything new during that time. Halfway through that we had to add isbn etc so had to revise those already revised for currency. Along came https issues which I'm STILL fixing today-along with them not allowing edits on older listings which means I have to end and relist things (internal application error). Not to mention the yearly postal increases. Over the last few years I have spent more time revising than listing and every time they roll out a new policy I hold my breath to see what I'm going to have to do now.

dear toolguy
so why haven't you bought those 40 items yet? I have over 56 watchers on one item alone with only 3 of them in stock yet no sales....
