New Head of eBay Seller Experience Details Major Changes

eBay's new Vice President of Seller Experience Harry Temkin revealed in an interview on Wednesday changes that will be coming to the marketplace and described how they will impact sellers.

eBay CEO Devin Wenig brought his former colleague from Thomson Reuters on board last month as he tries to revive growth.

With a background in financial information and technology, Temkin is tasked with helping Wenig achieve his vision of a more powerful central dashboard for sellers, called Seller Hub.

Temkin envisions sellers viewing their listings in Seller Hub with realtime pricing data on one side and promoted listing settings on the other - and it's easy to see why. Amazon's marketplace success is in part due to fluid product pricing, but it also makes it an incredibly competitive place on which to sell. And making it easier for sellers to pay-for-play increases eBay's take rate.

Here are changes Temkin announced:

Multiple Top Pick (MTP)
eBay already provides pricing guidance, but MTP takes it further. eBay will display off-eBay "web-based" prices of products (low, mid, high), and it will display prices for the top 5 comparable products on eBay (taking into account sellers' policies). MTP is launching to a limited audience starting this week with a full rollout next year.

Price-too-high Notifications and Adjustments
Temkin wants a mechanism to inform sellers in realtime if their product prices aren't comparable to other prices (on or off eBay), and give sellers the ability to either have eBay adjust the price for them, or reduce prices themselves in bulk by a set percentage relative to the prices eBay found.

Seller Initiated Offers
Sellers will be able to initiate an offer to anyone who is watching their listings.

Buyer Initiated Offers
Buyers will be able to initiate an offer to sellers. For example, Product X is listed by multiple sellers at $50. A buyer willing to pay $45 will be able to send a notification to those sellers asking if any would be willing to sell at the lower price.

Listing 1.0
Some of the features eBay foists on consumer sellers will be available as options to business sellers. For example, sellers will be able to choose to automatically relist items that don't sell at a pre-determined lower price or with the Best Offer feature.

Multi-user Access and Authentication
eBay will roll out multi-user access and authentication sometime in the first three months of 2019. This allows an eBay seller to give employees partial or full access to their account.

Social Sharing from Seller Hub
eBay made it easier for sellers to socially share listings using eBay's mobile app, and it will extend that functionality to Seller Hub.

Seller Protections
eBay will work on seller trust issues in 2019 - "As the head of seller experience, it's my job to protect you as the seller," Temkin said. "It's a high priority to add more seller protections."

Temkin's presentation indicates more fluid pricing and paid promoted listings are priorities for eBay in the year ahead.

Great another suit who has never worked retail and knows nothingabiut selling, yet is being put i  charge of sellers.

my reading of the changes was that buyers will be able to iniate offers to ALL sellers, not just ones who have chosen best offer.

The relist function they refer to is in that automatically knocks down the price upon relist.

As far as cost comparisons,  I guess they don't look at eBay as a site for  collectibles anymore.  Which is what ebay did best.

I HOPE it's on ebay.
I KNOW it's on Amazon.

Different strokes for different folks.

What is it about human nature that Wenig refuses to acknowledge?
Maybe his Stepford look says it all.

I WILL NEVER PAY FOR A "PROMOTED LISTING"

I PAY ENOUGH IN FEES

AS IT IS EBAY CAN'T DELIVER ENOUGH BUYERS

PS: The last 7 days have been the worst in 18 years of selling!

I can't pay the bills :-(

The only part that bothers me is the remark that Ebay will lower the price according to their research. For used or vintage items, that does not work. True Example: I once saw 4 Hummel figurines priced at $8.00, plus shipping. When you read the ad, you find that everyone of the figurines have parts missing or have been glued back together, but according to the price comparison program, Ebay was using at the time, Hummels  were worth $8 each.  With this new seller experience, will Ebay will reduce the price of Hummel Figurines to match their price comparison program? If so, sellers will have no choice but to leave Ebay.

^^  This is dumb.  The seller knows what they paid for an item and what it should sell for.  We're in it to make money, not lose money and that's what EB wants us to do....for the sake of them making fees.

BTW. for the past 3 months or so, my clothing has been jumping off the shelves of Tradesy.  Ladies & gents, I think the only way around this is to sell something that's not "common"....the Collectibles, rare/ antiques, and Replacement / Parts ONLY will do well in (the new) EB because you're the only one selling that stuff.  If you're selling "Proctor and Gamble" "Nikes" - common brands, you're going to drown.

"brought his former colleague from Thomson Reuters on board last month as he tries to revive growth"

Straight from the dictionary: cronyism (noun, derogatory)  "the appointment of friends and associates to positions of authority, without proper regard to their qualifications."

Thomson let Wenig go for under performing.  Nuff said.   Seems appropriate that Wenig's pal will focus on Seller Flub since he obviously knows nothing about ecommerce or retail.   All those dashboards do is remind me of how eBay killed my sales and ruined my business.

@Rexford, I get offers from Posh all the time.  I often counteroffice.  Sometimes they accept the counter, sometimes they don't.  I don't see anything wrong with doing a "bulk" make an offer.  The trick is to have something listed that NO ONE ELSE HAS.  For example @ Posh, you may see the same JJill blouse and therefore it would make sense to make an offer.  But not all listings are similar.  JJill blouse #1 will be different than #2, and also sizing matters.  A size 10, size 12, etc.  So that offer can only work if it's the SAME SIZE the SAME BRAND and the SAME style.

BTW, buyers can already initiate an offer.  I get those too.  I have a product listed for $20 and the buyer sends me a message asking if I will accept $10, if yes then I relist and enter the price at $10 just for THAT seller.  So this is nothing new either.  I also have that happen at Grailed and Tradesy.  It's up to the seller to accept the offer by the buyer.  Not new at all.  Happens all the time.

• Another data guy with a FinTech background and no material experience with retail, ecomm, usability, or design – the perfect fit to lead a seller experience role!

• On “paper” (actually his LinkedIn and CrunchBase profile) he’s another Scott Cutler-ish clone – BOD of the BATS Stock Echange, CEO of a couple small startups in the FinTech sector, and of course all his time at Thompson Reuters.

• I’ve suggested Wenig has Cutler on-board to help scale eBay to function much more like a stock exchange: scale transactional volume with bids and asks on the buyer and seller side. Hiring another guy with the same type of background as Cutler and the buyer-initiated offers and other things he wants to implement seems to confirm it.

• I get that eBay needs some “Data” leadership, but Wenig doesn’t seem to be managing to his blind spots very well with this hire.

• Why does eBay burn through so many “Seller Experience” execs so quickly?

• Earlier this year, former Lithium Technologies CTO Sunil Rajasekar (the company that hosts the infamous eBay community forums) held the title of “GM of Selling Experience”  (he’s also really a “data guy”). His LI profile now shows him as VP/GM of eBay's Engineering and Product Management.

• What does this mean for Bob Kupbens? Is this a peer position to Kupbens or will Kupbens report to this guy? (or is Bob having drinks with RJ Pittman ….)

• Kupbens’ has gone through a lot of title/role changes, at least as presented externally. He’s often (mis)represented as the executive version of Griff’s seller advocate-type role (back in 2016 eBay’s Kupbens’ announcement included “serve as global initiative owner for seller experience”.)

• I noticed the eBay executive leadership page now features only SVP’s and above. There must have been squabbling amongst the too-many VP’s on who was/wasn’t featured prominently on the profiles page)

Since eBay,s search system and product catalog is ONLY accurate for products with a UPC code, the NEW policy should be applied to ONLY products with a UPC code. Otherwise DISASTER will result; as you the Seller will receive notices your product is too expensive based on terrible programmed parameters of the OBSOLETE eBay search system! Mr new VP, read and understand, ebays search system is NOT and can NOT understand RARE variations on a specific model made 70 years ago! Your ONLY choice for sucess is with a  UPC coded product!

Chicago48, everything that you say is true, but what I see on Poshmark are a ton of low ball offers.  I also clearly see that folks list items at a much higher price that what they normally would so they have additional wiggle room when the offer comes.

All and all it works for me (good sales on Poshmark) but the buyer on Poshmark is a different breed of buyer than on eBay.   I am hoping that there will be an option to turn this off on eBay.

Protection for sellers? What a joke! Even when you hand them proof, have over 6,000 feedback, 100% positive, they take the side of the lying buyer.  The seller always has to take the hit.  If ?I didn’t need the money to supplement my Social Security, I would be gone.  EBay is a joke.

I liked the idea of being able to make an offer to watchers.  That's something ice wanted to see for awhile.  At a live show, I can tell when somebody's on the edge and some sort of deal will push them over.

That said...part of it's because I just want out (without losing my shirt).  eBay and Scamazon and Walmart and Hasbro pretty much dashed my hopes of making a few bucks on the side to fund a US-made action figure.  If I had a business I still have a damn about, maybe I wouldn't be interested.  Monkeyed payments is still coming and I'm still not going to submit to it.

I think this ^^ is a given.  I have rarely had someone pay BIN price.  Usually they offer.  That's why my prices are $5-10 higher than other sites.
