PayPal Report Shows Troubling Signs for eBay

By: Ina Steiner

PayPal CEO Dan Schulman was surprisingly critical of eBay's managed payments launch during today's third-quarter earnings call with Wall Street analysts, but he said managed payments had nothing to do with the softness in PayPal's eBay business.

PayPal's eBay Marketplaces volume grew only 3% on an FX-neutral basis - that's compared to PayPal's Merchant Services volume growth of 28%. Given that PayPal is the most popular payment method on eBay, that is not a good sign. eBay will report its third-quarter earnings on October 30.

For now, eBay managed payments excludes PayPal; it launched to a small number of sellers one week before the end of the quarter.

Schulman made a point of saying that eBay sellers who moved to managed payments have left comments on eBay seller forums reporting a sales drop of 40 - 60% and were "clamoring to come back to PayPal."

eBay buyers who land on listings from sellers enrolled in managed payments are not able to pay with PayPal - it won't be added until July 2019. eBay calls the rollout of managed payments a multi-year journey and this week said it has already managed more than $20 million in GMV, representing nearly half a billion dollars on an annualized run rate, to date.

eBay-related volume represented 11% of volume on PayPal in the third quarter, down from 13% a year ago and 20% three years ago. eBay and PayPal split in July 2015.

Donohoe runs PayPal. I don't trust anything that is published from PayPal corporate.

@Rexford - I wonder how many of those 59% never buy another item on eBay.

I can't help but feel an equal instant karma towards the top brass at eBay and the shareholders with the stock tanking today.

It's only fitting this happened since the historic 2018 drop in sales for EVERYONE, no views, no search results, hidden listings, picture deletions, fee increases, poorly Managed Payments rollout, and major site errors going on.

I've read countless posts from small sellers that depend on eBay sales for living expenses, all the way to million dollar businesses that pay 10 employees, that have all suffered greatly from sales drops this year, NOT due to something they did.  One month 1000 sales, the next month 50 sales.  All sellers are scared and frightened!

Ebay used to be a marketplace for the people, built by the people.

Today, I don't know what they're trying to be.

As far as I'm concerned, If we as sellers suffer, then everyone should suffer.  I hope the stock goes to $10.00 a share to finally prove to everyone that there are major problems at eBay.

I think Amazon's only mistake in poaching sellers was they should have contacted eBay's ad department. I'm sure they would have been eager to send az's recruitment messages or display recruiting ads to eBay's top sellers for the right price! Like an ebay employee once said, their departments don't communicate with each other, they work at cross-purposes sometimes.

Years ago many of us said they'd die a death by a thousand cuts..  Hopefully the chickens are finally coming home to roost.  Their greed and arrogance have made them as bad as Enron. How many hundreds of thousands of small businesses have they destroyed?

Would love to send Wenig a "Pride Goeth Before the Fall" plaque.

Stock down another $-.25 on sales reported after the close.   Very Cose to a full 10 percent drop in one day.

Monday is likely to be worse as there are 80 or 90 percent of StockHolders of eBay who don't even actively CHECK IN to see day to day performance.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some downgrades Monday or Tuesday after some of the teams discuss/analyze this dog of a stock.

"NoMoreEbay, Devin is certainly the worst CEO in the history of American business, of that there is no doubt."

I guess you never heard of ENRON (Jeffrey Skilling)

WaMu (Alan H. Fishman)

WorldCom (Bernie Ebbers)

Lehman Brothers (Richard Fuld)

And I'm sure there are many more. . .Devin is a small fish in a very large pond!

With a drop like we saw today chances are eBay will go up on Monday.

When earnings (or loses) come out on the 30th we'll have a much clearer picture of where eBay is going.

If eBay drops to the low 20's next week I'm a BUYER!

But I doubt that will happen. . .

Tool, I do think that you should buy.  I urge you to.  Buy as much as you can. It is ALWAYS good to put your money where your mouth is.

@toolguy - I don't know why you'd want to buy eBay stock, other than to brag that you bought it. We already know they don't pay dividends. And the way things are going, you're likely to lose money.

Despite losing sellers, market share, and negative revenue growth, the future is bright for ebay...uh huh.
ebay rents pixels (poorly) and pays no dividends.

T-bills look like a gold mine by comparison.

Actually,  if the stock gets that low somebody will come in and buy enough to take over the leadership once again and then bring in a team of turnaround experts.  We have to just hope there is enough left of the marketplace to turn it around, otherwise they might just shut that part down or sell it off to focus on the other parts of Ebays business, including Stub Hub that is stagnating now that Ebay owns it.

The biggest problem with Ebay has been they buy all these great companies to integrate with the selling platform and then run them into the ground or just sit there because they can only be used by Ebay (Paypal for example).  The culture there has learned to rely on the easy cash cow and once they have it just sit back and let that portion of the company cover their ineptitude.  That is why Carl Icahn forced them to spin off Paypal, as he saw the potential for its growth but since Ebay owned it a lot of companies did not want to deal with them.  It was already happening some before Donohoe but after he came, but he perfected the method and did nothing but ride the cash cow Paypal until it finally cost him his job.  How he is nothing but a figurehead as COB of Paypal and CEO of another company which is going nowhere somewhere in the San Diego area.

I've bought eBay a few times over the past 2 decades

I bought at IPO and made a small fortune, bought again in 2008 and made another small fortune.

I've been playing Wall Street for 30 years!

eBay stock has been very good to me.

If eBay gets down to $21.40 I'm a buyer

At $21.40 eBay becomes a takeover prospect with a good chance at a 20-25% short term premium.

Like I said, on the 30th we will see where eBay is going. . .

I wouldn't call ServiceNow a "nowhere" company!

They employ 6000 people, have revenues of $2 billion and a market cap of $30 billion (about the same size as ebay)

it's quite the side show,,,,,,,,

it would literally take ebay a decade to reverse the damage these two CEO's have done in such a short time, i seriously doubt it's even possible

As Paypal says, ebay has been in steady decline,

i guess being at war with your customers was a bad business strategy

It is a screaming BUY man, you never try to catch a falling knife Tool, you should have shorted it at 46 like the 3 Stooges did.

I've been reading this forum for 15 years! (2003)

Posters here had eBay "out of business" in 2005 yet 13 years later eBay's still here. . .It seems the "tube" is bottomless. . .

Tool, you should have bought some SEARS on the way down too, they are still around but they just went bankrupt, so your logic means little.
