PayPal Report Shows Troubling Signs for eBay

PayPal CEO Dan Schulman was surprisingly critical of eBay's managed payments launch during today's third-quarter earnings call with Wall Street analysts, but he said managed payments had nothing to do with the softness in PayPal's eBay business.

PayPal's eBay Marketplaces volume grew only 3% on an FX-neutral basis - that's compared to PayPal's Merchant Services volume growth of 28%. Given that PayPal is the most popular payment method on eBay, that is not a good sign. eBay will report its third-quarter earnings on October 30.

For now, eBay managed payments excludes PayPal; it launched to a small number of sellers one week before the end of the quarter.

Schulman made a point of saying that eBay sellers who moved to managed payments have left comments on eBay seller forums reporting a sales drop of 40 - 60% and were "clamoring to come back to PayPal."

eBay buyers who land on listings from sellers enrolled in managed payments are not able to pay with PayPal - it won't be added until July 2019. eBay calls the rollout of managed payments a multi-year journey and this week said it has already managed more than $20 million in GMV, representing nearly half a billion dollars on an annualized run rate, to date.

eBay-related volume represented 11% of volume on PayPal in the third quarter, down from 13% a year ago and 20% three years ago. eBay and PayPal split in July 2015.

It is no wonder eBay can't make money, their criminal schemes are not working because sellers have rejected them all, just like the GTC listings that never end, then the morons raise the listing fee to 35 cents, yeah, that will get more inventory on the marketplace for sure.

The 3 Stooges of eBay all need to be fired, 2 of them for going along with Devin's devious criminal replatforming, this means Cutler and Schenkel need to be fired along side of Devin.

And just wait till product catalogs is fully rolled out and even more listings are hidden causing more buyers and sellers to leave.

Wenig has got to be one of the worst CEOs in corporate history. JD was a bully for sure, but at least he didn't mess with the core fundamentals of the platform. Wenig OTOH has turned it into a train wreck.

@NoMoreEbay You had better pray that Jack Ma never gets his mitts on Ebay. You think things are bad now with a lack of transparency or anything even remotely resembling honest trade in info from Ebay. Jack Mas has made his fortune and continues to do say playing both ends against the middle. Enticing customers with propaganda drilling into their heads the unbelievable low prices and selection of goods, how fantastic customer service is, while fully encouraging, even promoting and running interference for, downright thieving and fraud by the "sellers" on his public site.

The day Jack Ma ever acquires Ebay is the day all of us are out, if we know whats good for us, taking for granted any of us would be allowed to or inclined to stay anyway.

NoMoreEbay, Devin is certainly the worst CEO in the history of American business, of that there is no doubt.

Here we have a man who thinks innovation is taking a legacy marketplace platform that has sold untold Billions since its founding, and he gets the bright idea of cloning Amazon and calling it 'restless experimentation'.

Now only a moron would think that duplicating Amazon's interface and product display pages would duplicate their financial results, but that is how dense Devin Wenig really is folks.

eBay's Board of Directors is going to have to be replaced also, there is no excuse for leaving Devin Wenig at the helm of eBay this long.

They're both hard-power sissies to be feuding like this. They seems to be operating PayPal and Ebay the way you'd expect a family business. All while disrupting the livelihoods of tens-of-thousands of small businesses.

Much like our politicized trade wars, there are no winners in these scenarios.

Hey Devin, how is that 'free returns' policy helping sales now?

Don't forget your eBay managed payments, that is going to be a big winner when you have no idea that without traffic and real buyers other than your sellers you keep giving eBay Bucks to in the hopes that they buy something, these dumb ideas will never put up numbers for you.

Google has to send traffic dummy, sellers put up listings that are never indexed, it is a wonder you have no idea how the web works and you are CEO of eBay.

strife  It's because of ebay that Jack Ma is even here. When eBay acquired EachNet, China's largest auction player at that time in 2003, Jack Ma launched TaoBao.

ebay as with most things they do was completely unprepared for the Chinese market and failed miserably while TaoBao took off. Jack Ma beat the tar out of ebay and the rest is history.

ebay has had so many failures it's incalculable. But Wenig, this guy is in a league of his own when it comes to screwing things up. It's really mind boggling. How is he still there?

I wonder if this statement by Mr. Schulman has anything to do with eBay excluding PayPal in the initial roll-out of Managed Payments. I would guess that PayPal is not happy about being dumped as the only payment method on eBay. PayPal may also be unhappy that eBay has been declaring for many years that PayPal was the only "safe" way to pay on the internet, and now it perhaps make them seem not so safe.

Troubling times of eBay....

Devin Wenig and his plans of extracting more cash out of a declining top line instead of bringing in traffic to grow the top line.

Inventing new schemes to extract more fees out of a slowing marketplace instead of trying to grow marketplace traffic is a fundamental flaw of Devin Wenig's management of eBay.

There is one way to right the ship, fire Devin Wenig now, right at this very moment and hire a CEO with a web programming background.

From The Street.com:  "Adding to the concern for eBay, the study (that  Dan Schulman referred to) states that 59% of PayPal users have abandoned a transaction on eBay simply because PayPal wasn't a checkout option."

If you look at eBay's current stock price after today's dive, it's at nearly the same point as the stock split 3+ years ago. eBay has done nothing in a booming industry. I think it's no coincidence that Wenig has been the CEO since those 3+ years. It's almost as if this has been done on purpose or he's the worst CEO in the history of business.

52 Week Low 28.37
Today 28.59

Those numbers say everything that needs to be said about ALL of eBays tricks, gimmicks and plans.

Instead of embracing sellers (kick bad ones to the curb ASAP), eBay prefers to try and punish everyone and make everyones sales stink - all while sucking every penny out of the company.

The 3 Stooges of eBay are huddled up around the table discussing their latest hair brained scheme on how Amazon ruined the company over the last 4 years, this is their last gasp effort to keep their jobs when all 3 of them should be fired at the same time.

Yes Amazon did ruin eBay, when Dummy Devin copied their interface, Product Pages, Catalog all down to the ePID number.

Got news for you Devin, you are going to be on the long end of an intellectual property lawsuit so large that it will bankrupt your career.

Once Ayden is in full swing with no other choices, how long will it take before ebay starts raising the transaction fees. Not long.

They probably already have the fee schedule locked away just frothing at the mouth waiting to bleed more money from sellers.

I wish PayPal would open it's own auction site. I know I would be there and so would millions of other sellers. Taking the buyers with them. Only this time, there would be nobody for ebay to sue.

@NoMoreEbay
Given the pace of this downturn, and the one's that coming, AND the emerging competition, it's a tough sell to say anybody is willing to ride this train for at least 3 more years before seeing any daylight.
Only real hope is a takeover with an announcement of short-term, radical, seller-oriented changes.
The Under New Management sign would have to have a Paypal logo.
