eBay May Launch an Amazon-Style Fulfillment Service

By: Ina Steiner

EcommerceBytes 411 broke a story today about a new service eBay is looking into that could rival Amazon's FBA fulfillment service. As we told subscribers, eBay stated in a survey about the program:

"eBay is working to create fulfillment options that are faster, more affordable and more reliable for buyers. This next exercise will help us understand your preferences for a third-party fulfillment solution."

What do you see as the benefits of using a fulfillment service? Would it be more or less attractive to you if it were offered through eBay?

Many smaller sellers overcame their initial resistance to using Amazon FBA, and over the years, they have learned the pros and cons of outsourcing fulfillment. Feel free to share lessons learned - would you use eBay "FBE"?

Hello Marzy...... funny how you drop a comment and now.... crickets... zzzzz...

Go back to the eBay boards where they sugarcoat and block user posts with any real truth in them.

As far as the fulfillment centers.... depends what you sell, certainly not antiques or collectibles. But even if I sold UPC items I wouldn't trust Scambay with my products or packing correctly. How would you know a return was legit and who pays???
No way would I give them any extra fees at this point. This is another example of  Devin and eBay execs poisoning the well. The sooner Wenig is out, the better.
P.s. to all the cheerleading trolls... idc if you like my opinion or not, it's my business not yours.

It is just baffling to me that with so many small sellers' views (drastically) down, sales (drastically) down, and eBay punitive measures aimed at small sellers skyrocketing which force them even further down in search placement that anyone can defend this company.

So you cheerleaders keep raising your pom poms to eBay and criticizing those of us who see and have seen the handwriting on the wall for many years and continue to speak out against against a company who takes our money but will not give us the visibility we deserve.  As I said earlier, the noise will not stop and please save your breath as it relates to chastising us for making the noise.

There was a time when we loved ebay, we did everything ebay asked of us, we promoted ebay , and were proud to be sellers , but ebay stabbed us in the back, they tricked us, and took us as fools, we will never forget, or forgive them , ever.

Ebay is a nasty dirty looser crooked company, one of worst , and this patent is proof of the true ebay, not just a venue, and certainly not your partner,

@max ...

I remember "those days"....... it was indeed the golden age of eBay.

Everything was MAGICAL. I put goods and sold them, had little returns, never had buyers that cancelled sales, sent back other items ... it was the greatest invention since sliced bread.

Then came my first "interaction" with eBay, VERO, the lies, the lawyers, hell from  my source(s) and much more - all because of eBay greed.

In the end there were casualties... a few fellow sellers left, I lost money defending myself, my supplier(s) lost that manufacturer, all because eBay made a deal and let VERO run wild and lie....

It never got better - it went down hill from there.

Again - if theres something constructive to say and do when it concerns eBay - Im all for it - but when each seller downdate just comes into existence just to make sellers miserable ..... its hard to have a conversation.

It is ironic how eBay has sent their 'community volunteers' over here to disrupt critical content and comments on eBay like they do on the eBay forums by sanitizing the threads over there.

A little over a month ago they were gleefully defending Hal Lawton's kooky ideas that have now proved to be massive flops that Devin is continuing to force on sellers.

Hal Lawton is a disgrace, so is his sellers hub, guaranteed delivery, price matching, the pulling down of millions of listings for not selling as fast as good old Hal would like, pulling down millions of listing sellers paid for due to UPC codes.

The eBay volunteers can't provide any answers of defend any of this stuff with rational arguments, so they come over here to try to keep the truth from being seen by the worldwide community of sellers.

'm sure they are trying to stop the sellers on DownDetector.com from posting too.

Fulfillment by eBay? Never!  Copy Amazon fulfillment (FBA) - why would any one want to do that?  Amazon fulfillment is minimal packing at best and shoe horn stuff it in where ever with a good deal of warehouse mishandling.

If your item is sturdy and well packed and an item where carton mars and damage is not really a problem -- then -- FBA is fine. If the item is not really sturdy, and customers would want the item in a cosmetic outer container or box then Amazon FBA should not be your choice; and certainly not anything eBay dreams up.

This will probably work well for those sellers who have mass quantities of new product to move and some gated items - (gating can't be far behind) with special arrangements with eBay.   Who knows, maybe this is a revival of Half.com, of sorts.

For unique, non new items, that's an huge risk for someone to take.  I find it ironic that when I do get something from amazon, often its shipped from the manufacturers own warehouse or outside of amazon.  Faster, too.  We have prime and rarely get fast shipping no matter how much we spend.  Yet, they have a fulfillment center within 4 miles of my home and use a hybrid delivery system you can't always track.  That's amazon, it's their business and it is what it is.

I see eBay slowly and painfully separating the vintage, OOAK, etc. from this new venture.  They are using the using the eBay name to create a much different site.  I just hope this doesn't mean there won't be "Original Flavor" for the rest of us.

And I can't help but wonder what they will do if a piano company decides to use their fulfillments centers.....

@ leathermermaid8

you can bet your bottom dollar that the goons in VERO (as part of ebays new "authentication program) will look at every incoming shipment.

Worse - as you said - makers will pressure eBay to block (disallow) certain brands (they are ALL fakes since we dont know who these sellers are!).

One can only hope that the gods are smiling and eBay comingles goods (since otherwise the warehouse space needed would be impossibly huge)  and gets in trouble "themselves" for shipping fakes ...  (thats a positive thing about eBay we can talk about - eBay getting in trouble)

When a webmaster is selfish and does not care about their users it shows, there  are sites today that want users to turn off their ad blockers and block access to content with scripts that stall the delivery of web pages to users.

Guess what happens when a site does that to users?

Forces the users to do things their way instead of meeting the user's needs,  well this is what eBay is doing to their users, forcing them into Sellers Hub, trying to force sellers to buy Promoted Listings, trying to change their behaviour and habits in using the website.

Yahoo tried these very same tactics and we see where they are today, this is the direction current eBay management is heading in, I called it long ago before the Sellers Hub blow up,  but eBay does not care what users think to their own destruction, just like Yahoo had no regard for their users.

"Hello Marzy...... funny how you drop a comment and now.... crickets... zzzzz..."

I don't think there is any humor in this at all.  Many posters responded with name calling and the such.  The question should be; Why Would Marzy return to the thread not why she hasn't.

@blueribbon

Probably a little of both.  I'm NOT trying to create a conflict with you or anyone else.  I personally think that all the posts that happened after she posted rather tells why she has not return.  No one enjoys being called names or deserves to be called names simply because someone doesn't like what they posted.

She may not know how to respond therefore she doesn't respond. She may not want to engage those that felt the need to demean her and/or call her names.

What she posted was her observation of the blogs on this site.  Now I don't think she should have called out Ming and that this fact has a lot to do with the responses she received.

Her actual post stated:
I wish there were a way to block the same negative nay-sayers who just hate eBay.  I don't love eBay but I come here to hopefully read opinions based on constructive criticism vs their constant dogma. Ming, you are part of that group.

Nothing she said was incorrect as an overall statement.  But again, the singling out of Ming should have been left out IMHO.

@ Marie and all re Marzy:

I try to always stay out of discussions such has been part of this thread regarding Marzy's  post.  After reading it I thought the main reason of the post was to ding/take a swipe at Ming. It wasn't much, and I just moved on, as Ming is very capable of taking care of himself.

I have been a bit surprised at what appears to me to be an over reaction to a minor post.
