eBay Makes Big Changes in 2017 Fall Seller Release

eBay officially announced its 2017 Fall Seller Update today and is making several major policy changes, including changes to Returns. One big takeaway: eBay sellers will once again find themselves editing their listings to comply with new requirements, from product identifier requirements for Refurbs and Used goods, to a ban on watermarks in images.

eBay will no longer allow sellers to charge Restocking fees when they offer free returns. And, "If you do not offer free returns, you will still have discretion to charge a 10%, 15%, or 20% restocking fee. However, starting in 2018, the buyer will only see a restocking fee of "up to 20%" in the listing."

And, beginning in October 2017, returns requests may automatically be accepted.

eBay spun one change to Returns as a positive: "Starting Fall 2017, you will have added protection when you offer free returns. You can refund up to 50% of the item price if the returned item is damaged or missing parts."

Sellers will also likely feel a difference when it comes to visibility in search thanks to several changes. Buyers will make eBay Guaranteed Delivery listings searchable for all buyers, and they'll be able to search and filter listings by "free return policies." eBay said it would also featuring listings with free returns policies in its marketing campaigns.

Sellers have already been feeling the effect of some of the announcements since eBay began making changes without having provided context. Let us know what you think of today's eBay Seller Update - there's a lot to absorb.

@epuise Toys'R'Us virtually Belly Up. Another 'too big to fail' outfit that HAS failed, just like Blockbuster Video, America Online, and a bunch of other seemingly invincible companies that 'dominated' their 'markets,' but that business model no longer exists in the economy. When was the last time you got an AOL software disc in the mail? Heck, it seems like my last feeBay SALE was before that!

@Marie The UNSTATED message here is that you might as well discontinue any 'no returns' policy and issue 50% refunds as a matter of course. Reading Ina's summary or excerpts of the FSU, it would appear that feeBay will accept your claim of missing parts/damage at face value and allow what is for all practical purposes a 50% restocking fee, less the hit you took on shipping which can be considerable on low/mid-priced items. Be prepared for Red Donuts and DSR ding's, of course.

More of Devin's changes getting slammed by sellers, I guess top executives are too stupid to read their own forums, but they always have been.

What
a debacle! As a small but long time seller, it seems that eBay continuously strives to force us out of their marketplace with these lame brain decisions and format changes. How they can justify forcing this mess on us simply defies logic. Worse, we have zero recourse and trying to talk to any of their reps is futile to say the least. Devin Wenig (CEO)-are you listening to any of us?

The impression this new policy left on you is not the same as it left on me.  I did not take it the same way you have.  I think once it is in place a bit you will feel better about it.  The return policy changes are not a whole lot different than what we deal with now.  The sky is not falling.

We will adapt to the changes like we have for the past 20 years.

Where else you gonna go?

I don't see Bonanza, Etsy or eCrater paying the bills like eBay does. . .

@Marie: Actually, I didn't say the sky was falling. It struck me as a mixed blessing; now Liar Buyers can only steal HALF your money!

these updates/changes have about zero effect on me. If someone opened a return I always agree as fighting it would never work in my favor with eBay. I don't watermark my photos which are sometimes "borrowed" but it is few and far between. I don't charge restocking fees, etc. These changes are geared towards the mass-market widget seller, not antiques and collectibles.

@volvo

No it doesn't.  It gives the seller the OPTION to do a partial refund.  It does not say the seller has to give the partial refund.  Sellers have been asking for this option for a long long time if you go back and review the Ebay threads.

The exact words in the Seller Update are "You can DEDUCT up to 50% of the item price if the returned item is damaged or missing parts."

The Seller Update does not express any position on if the seller has any FB protection if they do reduce the refund because the item arrived damaged or missing something.  We all need some clarification on that.

A lot of Buyers on ebay are now very use to getting a refund
and keeping the item , when there is a problem, not an issue for the seller with cheaply manufactured items aka china, or cheaply paid garage sale finds, but sellers with tight margins of profit will be thinking long and hard before listing their next valuable item.

And if I could only use one phrase for ebay it would be 'death by one thousand cuts' , this one is just another few  cuts, to add to the list.

as mentioned by Volvo351, many company's bigger than ebay have long gone out of business and ebay is no exception, they seem to be going down the same path,

Does anyone know if a "new without store tags" will require a UPC?

The requirement for a UPC or ISBN is NOT store specific, it is product specific, if that is what you are asking.

Ebay have mastered the art of fixing things that require no repairs. Our sales have declined by 42.2 percent since opting in for their "guaranteed delivery" program. We test opted out and same result. Evry year we have to suffer a month or two due to their biennial "seller updates" but this one so far has really stunk
