eBay to Roll Out New Simplified Search

By: Ina Steiner

eBay CEO Devin Wenig told Wall Street this morning that the company was rolling out a new search - and we had to replay that part of the webcast several times to make sure we heard it right, as that was news to us.

"You'll see new, compressed, simplified search, which will be a significant difference to the eBay experience, in the next 60 days," Wenig told attendees at the Citi 2017 Global Technology Conference.

All of the other changes coming in the next 60 days he mentioned had been previously announced - Guaranteed Delivery, Image Search, and Authentication of high end items.

Sellers don't like change and typically say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." But in this case, it's arguable as to whether eBay search is not broken in its current state.

What do you make of Devin Wenig's teaser about search?

@pace306  There is absolutely NOTHING organic about google search which is equally as filtered as eBay.   What many people don't realize is that a fair majority of the reason so many sellers are bankrupt is because Google manually removed eBay from it's search and continues to selectively remove whatever they choose.   There will never be a Christmas selling season for any small American business or home based seller.  Ever.  The design of current search manipulation is intended to offset what they view as an "imbalance" between brick and mortar vs online aka big business.  Small businesses are intentionally being crushed as collateral damage within their agenda.

After
this article was published, Google manually removed the story, the blog and the eBay listings of the owner of the blog from their search results.  There is currently pending law suits and legislation against Google manipulation.  International users have successfully sued them for it.

I'm afraid to ask.....what does he mean by "simplified", "compressed".....okay...does this mean small sellers items won't show and only the big boys will show?  That sounds like eBay-talk to me.

Here's another article about just how "organic" Google is.

"The
story in the New York Times this week was unsettling: The New America Foundation, a major think tank, was getting rid of one of its teams of scholars, the Open Markets group. New America had warned its leader Barry Lynn that he was “imperiling the institution,” the Times reported, after he and his group had repeatedly criticized Google, a major funder of the think tank, for its market dominance. @eXtinctBay

eBay has a market cap of $40 Billion

A buyout would push that price over $50 Billion

No one is buying into eBay except Wall Street

Both eBay & Paypal hit all times highs today. . .

The combined price is now over $100 a share

@Patricia, the answer is NO.  The term is called "deep-six".  Ebay, and Google are "deep-sixing"  not just small businesses but also information they deem not backed by mainstream political agenda's, financial agenda's or scientific agenda's.

@Tool

I was not referring about NOW, but the possible condition of eBay AFTER the next two financial reports.

Then we will see if the changes to search, other new programs, and the holiday shopping season increase revenue in a fashion that would please Wall Street.

@ eXtinctBay =)  the stock is way up ???? Im confused.

There must be ANOTHER eBay you are referring to since the eBay Im familiar with started at 36.36 and is now 38.01 ... a point and a bit isnt way up (to me at least).

Tool - "We haven't even seen it yet and most of you are already complaining" ... because we have seen all of eBays OTHER dirty tricks - and since the CEO didnt bother to explain or elaborate - that means (by omission) that its another game just for the special people over on Wall Street.

"Not even a grain of sand on eBay's beach" ... ?????? say that about Walmart and Jet if you dare. Why would you even compare Pricefalls to eBay?  Compare AMAZON to them.

@RoKphish - they can if they want to OR they can license Google's - but eBay doesnt want to. Cassini was SPECIFICALLY engineered by eBay to NOT be organic. If as a seller you DONT "play ball" - your items get lowered in search - unfair but this is "TOOLs eBay" - one where you only get the rights eBay gives you - and all is fair on the war on sellers.

Pace, Tool has no idea what he is talking about, Pricefalls.com is a definite threat to eBay and their growth rates are likely 10 times greater than eBay's for the next decade compounding.

The handwriting is on the wall, marketplaces like Walmart, Pricefalls, Amazon, Facebook, and all the other vertical sites are going to keep eBay's growth where it is today, flat to negative, Tool has no answer for that one.

@pace306

I you had read all the thread you would know I didn't mention pricefall.com, another poster did.

I failed to include the " ", but his post wasn't too far above mine.

And if you knew anything about Wall Street you would know the eBay share holders got a share of Paypal when the 2 split.

Pace, not all of eBay's sellers sales are in the toilet like yours are!

Some sellers are having a BANNER year. . .I could give a whole list of examples if you have any doubts. . .I can also show you a lot of losers who think grandma's dollies are going to sell to eBay's savvy buyers. . .

Beth of VT  ... Beth of Vermont ?   Maybe you saw so few  Proctor Silex because that entire business has been absorbed by  Black and Decker SeVeRaL years ago ?   If you are looking for ANTIQUES then yes, you surely SHOULD be using the OLD brand name.

Hey Tool, maybe Devin should have told the investors at the Wall Street conference about that bust Hal Lawton leaving the company and his criminal sellers hub scam that he is forcing on sellers who are leaving eBay in droves.

Soon Wall Street will figure out like eBay sellers have that Devin is the biggest con man other than Donahoe that the street has ever seen.

I don't know, those "sticks" might have more value??!??!?!?  LOL

BR>Everyone
is making assumptions about what this search change means, me included.  None of us knows what it will do yet as Ebay has not DEFINED what "compressed, simplified search" even means.  I've got to say however, with the word "compressed" in there, it scares the heck out of me.  It sounds as if Ebay will minimize the search [filter out listings] that THEY deem the buyer doesn't want to see or need to see, whichever Ebay deems to be appropriate.  But again we don't know what it really means as Ebay has yet to tell us.

I believe ebafia began beta testing this new search last spring. That's when I began noticing unprecedented fluctuations in sales in terms of number of items sold daily/weekly and the cost of these items. The changes were so dramatic and inexplicable that I called 'customer service' and asked what changes had been made to search that was causing these swings. It was either feast or famine.

The little smart ass I spoke with said NO changes had been made in Cassini and that didn't I know as an experienced seller that sales are cyclical.

The same thing is happening again now. But I won't waste my time calling 'customer service.' Instead I'll continue experimenting to see how I can beat it.

@Marie
Ebay hasn't defined "compressed," and they probably won't.

I suspect "compressed" is a further refinement to throttling and hiding listing.

@ Tool

ebay's "savvy" buyers? ROTFL. Like the "savvy" buyer who asked me to cancel a sale the other night because he bought it while he was asleep?

Or the "savvy" buyers who return boxes of rocks, items other than one(s) the seller shipped, and filed SNADs so the seller has to pay return shipping?

If I was to guess, a wild guess, hope it's case...  compressed would address 1000 identical loss leader items flooding categories,  which like the river narrows results down to selective sellers. ..might benefit small seller? and make room for more overseas products.

Scroll river category, I see a list of unique single products, very few doubles. Scroll eBay same category , multiple id's selling one or two unique brand products repeated over and over dominating all search results. It's sellers gaming, manipulating the system.. as it's always been the case.

Tool - you quoted it - then responded. True it was inane and didnt make sense - but I replied to YOU.

"And if you knew anything about Wall Street you would know the eBay share holders got a share of Paypal when the 2 split. " YES AND SO?

Ive owned stock since the 60s (FYI). NO im not a stock broker or anything remotely close - but Im "no tool" (and my mind is clear since I dont smoke, drink or do drugs (gateway or other).

All the stock split did was rearrange the slices of the same pie.

eBay and Paypal (before being called out by Icahn) were playing a hiding game - of sellers money. Paypal used it to shore up losses (since thier silent factor got tired of it). eBay stuck the money overseas (9 billion now down to 5) so they wouldnt pay tax - I pay tax - eBay hid theirs.

Besides all this - Walmart, Jet, Sams Club, Amazon etc all have better stock performance - eBays last sales quarter was ONLY 3% - they BARELY scraped by.

But NONE of this has to do with new search and the past lies that eBay has told.

Until defined - its a load of BS - more from the man and the company that balance its books on the backs of small sellers - and robs them BLIND (hidding behind the TOS like a little girl).

My sales ARENT in the toilet - comsumer electronics does VERY well - but like most professional electronics sellers - the sales on Amazon are 10 to 1 vs eBay.

Buyers on Amazon want goods that most people use each day - not old tools from an old Tool.
