Welcome to eBay Seller Hub - or Seller Hell?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

On August 17, eBay posted a notice in a sub-category of its community boards informing participants that it had begun moving all business and professional sellers to the eBay Seller Hub. "With this change, you'll still have access to the selling benefits you did before, but the interface will be different."

But eBay never posted the announcement on the Seller Announcement Board.

Yesterday, the eBay boards exploded with complaints when sellers logged in to their My eBay page only to find themselves in unfamiliar territory.

This is no mild change - the complaints from sellers are as bitter as they get. It's confusing, it takes longer to accomplish tasks, it's mandatory, and came as a surprise, were among the complaints.

One seller's reaction:

"eBay keeps changing things that really do not matter. Seller Hub offers no improvements over Selling Manager Pro. Not a single one. It is way overcrowded and takes more work to navigate and use and I spend more time doing my work now than before. I've been an eBay seller since 1998 (there are probably no eBay employees left from then) and I've put up with a bunch of screwed up eBay changes. This one is one of the worst."

Readers weighed in on the change on the Ecommerce EKG board - one seller said they tried calling eBay customer service to try to opt-out: "Tried calling multiple times. Phone rings endlessly and disconnects - absolutely stunning. It appears Hal Lawton took the keys to eBay customer support with him - now we will try calling Macy's tech support for assistance!"

The reference was to the departure of the head of eBay Marketplaces Hal Lawton who left abruptly this month after serving two years at the company, having been recruited by eBay CEO Devin Wenig.

Presumably people trying to contact eBay over other concerns are equally frustrated by the inability to reach customer service.

During the eBay Open seller conference in July, eBay executives brought up a seller to the stage who raved about the insight he was able to get from using Seller Hub. We republished a 411 article about the presentation today on Newsflash, which you can read here.

The benefits of Seller Hub may be there, but eBay hasn't done a good job of explaining them, nor does it appear that it made the interface user-friendly to start.

As experienced eBay sellers, what do you think?

@shill buster

I said NOTHING of the sort.  I did NOT blame sellers for Lawton and Devin had designed as the Seller Hub.  You are now changing the subject of the thread you posted about COMPLETELY.

I was SPECIFICALLY addressing your post regarding the thread you posted a link to.  So don't now try to make it seem as if I said something I did NOT.

Sellers are NOT to blame for the Seller Hub programming and I came NO WHERE NEAR saying that.

Did some sellers misunderstand the $15.99 fee for the Selling Manager Pro.  YES they most certainly did and that is what was being discussed by me and NOTHING more.

The Sellers Hub issue is enough ground to fire Devin, if he had any class he would directly address sellers on this issue and why it was handled like it has been.

At this time a better solution would be for Devin to step down as CEO and for the Board to place a temporary CEO in charge until they can find someone from the outside to come in and clean this abomination that eBay is today up.

One of the many, many things that has always greatly annoyed me is that ebafia's criminal management teams have believed for years that we're so unsophisticated, so poorly educated, and generally ignorant that we can't see through their often illegal and always manipulative schemes to steal more and more money from us.

One doesn't have to be an MBA to recognize a the pack of thieves that ebafia is.

They have had TWO YEARS to build this sellers hub out and it is still an abomination that sellers have rejected, and Devin wants to force sellers to use it and they are in complete rebellion against him and this concept.

So one has to go, Devin or Sellers Hub.........Both being gone would be to the shareholders advantage at this point in time.

....

The
new seller hub is so awful. It looks like a 16 year old high on weed designed it. It's so clunky and basic. Information that used to provide an easy to use glance (with a convenient side bar for navigation) is now spread all over the place. And the formatting is just atrocious. "Hey! Let's make this look like something done on Geocites in the 90s! Everyone loves having to work to find things!" seems to have been their M.O.

I've been selling on eBay for 19 years. I started with helping my mom's business when I was 16, and I eventually moved on to having my own accounts. I've adapted to all the changes eBay has sent out. This new format is the worst I've ever seen from them. I dearly wish there was an option to get rid of this child made mess.

.....

There is a way to get rid of it, but the Board of Directors will have to make that move....

I got the e-mail, guess I'm one of those being picked on.  Couple of months ago saw the Opt In - took a peek and high tailed it out of there!  Don't need to see a depressing graph of how dismal my sales are.  Good Lord, things are bad enough and now folks are, naturally, saying there are glitches and bugs, etc.  By the way Trinton, that whole IPR thing is and will drive buyers away.  If a buyer cannot ask for a total due and has to proceed with checkout and pay individual shipping for each item - you're driving business away along with stealing sellers' money when they have to refund for over payment on shipping .... that's if the seller is lucky enough to have the buyer actually follow through on purchasing more than 1 item from a seller.  Dumbest most evil thing eBay has ever done!

Hi trinton@ebay.  I've tried a number times on numerous subjects to get a reply from you, but it never seems to happen?  Here goes nothing (again) .... Your statement above states that "Hey everyone, we have recently made the decision to remove the Opt-Out feature for some sellers. "  What does that exactly mean?  In particular the part "for some sellers"?  I did receive the e-mail, but will not even click on it, as I don't want to be a guinea pig for some eBay test.  Again, your response above is rather ambigious and misleading.  You also stated "Now, as we are consolidating tools into one location, we have determined this is the best next step for our community. "  From reading it, you are only adding more confusion - two very different statements.  At first it reads that "some sellers" are stuck with it, but then you imply that all sellers will have it?  Is this an absolute FORCED CHANGE?  And, if so, when is the date of total disaster to take place?  Just be honest.  If the "Opt-Out" feature is allowed for some sellers and not others, what does that mean?  Are you doing it, no matter what, or are you just playing games?

Trinton@ebay ... you gave me a very long and very uninformative answer - and now this?  Not in the least way encouraging.  You did not answer me ... when is it final?  I have NOT opted in, although I was sent the e-mail indicating that it was being FORCED on sellers in August.  Thought I'd just wait until it was actually forced, then check other posts for those poor souls that opted-in and cannot get out.  Since clearly you do NOT want sellers to contain eBay CS about this issue, I have chosen to wait and see.  I'll get info from other disgruntled sellers to answer any questions or concerns.  God forbid that anyone calls eBay CS for help!  Thanks for nothing. ..... including the forced IPR questions/issue concerns I've posted many times.  Your / eBay's silence speaks volumes.

Wow, you aren't listening to your customers...  Why are you forcing this on those of us who wish to use the old format?  I want to spend time selling... Not learning stuff I will never use.  I could understand this if I were selling thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, but for the moms and pops selling stuff... it is just too much.  I called customer service very frustrated and they opted me out of one of my accounts, but now of course I can't bundle my relists.  Why do you want to cripple your sellers?  We should be considered the backbone of your business.

Ric says "Trying to build a successful business on what eBay is like trying to build a store on a foundation of quicksand."

Absolutely true.  On every other site that I have built a presence on, the more items I add, and the harder that I work, the more my business grows. I see the return on my hard work. So not surprisingly where do you think I spend most of my time?   At every sale that I make elsewhere is a sale that eBay loses.  Seems fair to me.

On eBay, once my sales hit that invisible magic number that only eBay knows, sales come close to halting until sometime the next month.

Crazy programmers?  Hardly.  You ever try to teach an H1B how to code correctly?  It's like teaching a dog how to read.  Everybody know it's a farce but the show must go on or management will lose face and we can't have management lose face.

"This short video from last year gives a general overview."

Did you read the part about "last year"? We knew it was coming - they gave us a year to prepare - that's it. Why didn't you get used to it? Why did you wait? Because it's clunky? Because you looked at it and decided you didn't like it? Well if someone can point me to an example of a change eBay has EVER made then reversed - please do. All the whinning in the world won't change the fact that the Evil Empire does whatever it wants. I used it - made myself adapt and it basically doesn't take me much longer if any to list. Everyone hates change and I think most of us are older sellers so we really hate change and have no desire to learn one more danged thing BUT we need to keep selling right? So let's try to help each other figure this out so we can move on. We have a much bigger problem looming with those fricken UPC's - I know that's going to be a mess. And so far I haven't really noted one single seller who is really leaving because of the HUB. It is what it is.

May the Force be with you.

Oh, goody! Because Seller Hell is rife with so much cluttered minutia, we can expect yet another version to be thrust upon uninformed and startled sellers. I can't wait!
