eBay Says Google Security Change Will Scare Shoppers

eBay said Google's impending security change would "deter" shoppers, and it warned sellers today of changes it is making (and has been making) that impact their listings.

"Starting in October 2017, Google Chrome - the browser used by almost half of all eBay buyers - will begin displaying the message "Not Secure" in the address window when users visit standard HTTP pages, and HTTPS pages that include nonsecure HTTP content.

"eBay believes that the "Not Secure" message may deter shoppers from buying and impact your conversion rate. eBay is taking steps to make sure that your buyers won't see this message and can access your listings securely."

Some key takeaways from the announcement:

- If you want your listings to show the complete item description, you will need to remove HTTP content from your listings.

- eBay will email sellers who have listings that contain HTTP, starting August 28th

- eBay will begin using the HTTPS communications protocol for all listings starting in October.

- In the future, eBay will move all eBay store pages to HTTPS.

- Do not include contact info and links to off-eBay websites.

eBay had mentioned some changes coming as a result of the new HTTPS protocol as part of the Summer 2017 seller update - you can read the announcement on this page. But it wasn't clear to sellers that eBay would begin hiding item descriptions in seller listings.

Even when eBay began hiding descriptions as early as July, there was no explanation or reminder despite many questions, and eBay customer service reps seemed as confused as sellers about the practice.

There is a lot to confuse sellers; eBay recently banned active content from listings, and sellers may not realize the HTTPS security issue is a another issue with which they must deal.

And while many people think of its search engine when they think of Google, it's the Google Chrome browser that is making the security change that is prompting eBay's response - this is not simply a Search Engine Optimization issue.

Google's decision to roll out the change in October is troubling - it's peak holiday-shopping season, and scaring shoppers by displaying security warnings on sites that have yet to adapt couldn't come at a worse time of year.

The change to Google Chrome affects not just eBay, it applies to all sites on the Internet. Sellers who run their own ecommerce stores also face the prospect of lower sales as a result of the change to Chrome unless they've taken appropriate measures.

You can read more about the issue on the Google Security blog.

While eBay is forcing stupid ideas like their idiotic Sellers Hub they want to use to sell their criminal promoted listings with, they are neglecting everything that is important.

What this tells you is the top leadership of the company (The CEO) needs to be fired, eBay needs to bring someone from the outside in to clean out the trash in upper management, this company has been misguided since the days of Dumbahoe.

@The End
Open a brick and mortar store?  Are you kidding?  If you think eBay/Amazon/Google/etc are greedy, you haven't seen the rent seekers here.  Thousands of dollars every month for even the dumpiest low-traffic locations with a minimum 12-month commitment.  Really puts that $20 monthly plan eBay offers in perspective.  Neither delivers enough to be worth it but a bad year on eBay won't do anywhere near the damage a bad year in B&M will.

In my market, even most conventions are a scam.  More of them that were alright one-day events are moving to two-day or three-day formats regardless of whether or not they have the traffic to support it.  So table fees are up, lodging costs are added on, everybody makes money except the dealer.  And the customers they manage to bring in, God, they're poorer by the day, waffling over as little as $10.  At least eBay's only dinging you when they actually make a sale.  You can spend $1000 setting up at a convention and not bring in a dollar.

This is why Devin needs to be fired, he is out of touch with reality, at eBay open he was telling sellers how important Sellers Hub is to eBay's future along with AI and all the other lunacy he is promoting, in the mean time eBay is going down the tubes showing US based sellers listings as international sellers.

So what else is new? Google makes major changes every year just in time to interrupt the possibility of success and profitability that we spend all the other months doing our best to prepare for. Tired...very tired...

Https only needs tof be on the payment gateway. Your whole site does not need Https nor ebay because the payment details are processed Https securely by law. Paypal..credit cards..etc all use Https protocols to encrypt data.

It's BS and only a way google can control the Internet further.

Do not use Google or chrome or firefox!!!

Per Rexford:

''Something tells me that if eBay was security compliant none of this would be pushed onto the sellers.''

Bingo!

You've hit the nail directly on the head...

Individuals who CHOOSE to ignore online security protocols are simply providing havckers unlimited access to their personal information, which will eventually be purloined and disseminated to god knows who.

Although securing a site can be very expensive, most of the major ecommerce and social media sites use secure pages.

Nothing is free...

You have to pay to play.

They've got us stymied either way.

Think I'll go back to Detail Landscaping again....I'm Great at that and people need it. Rightly priced for Seniors and Young working people.
And I don't catch poison ivy  :o)

The End:

If you switch from an unsecured  (''http'') site address to a secured one (''https''). you most notify each of the major browsers of the change by utilizing the web tools that each company provides online.

Initially there will be a drop in visitor site traffic that is directly derived from search engines, as all of the web crawlers have to re-index all of your newly created https: web pages.

Once all of the pages have been crawled and the search results have been updated, you might actually see a boost in your visitor stats.

Whatever:

Re: ''I don't know one single person that wants to buy something on eBay so they go to Google to find it - ridiculous''

Unlike Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, Snap, and Twitter, eBay is no longer a destination that users typically visit on a daily basis.

Like all of the other non-essential (i.e., to users that is) sites that are out there, eBay heavily depends on traffic that comes from organic searches initiated through a handful of major search engines.

To ignore the value of search engine traffic is folly.

Why do you think companies spend beaucoup (aka: boocoo) bucks on search engine and social media advertising.

Its because one has head to where all your potential customer might reside.

Search engine traffic went down the tubes for eBay in the days of Donahoe and his study that said Paid Advertising on Google did not work, then Google cut eBay's organic traffic off too, Donahoe was the original eBay CEO who specialized in shooting himself in the foot, Devin just picked up where he left off and continues the folly of eBay CEO's who have no idea what they are doing.

Devin is promoting things like the ill fated Sellers Hub that sellers hate and he is trying to force that abomination Hal Lawton created to round up sellers into that damned crap interface so they could sell them promoted listings that corrupt the already bad search engine.

Dummies running major corporations does not work, ask the former Yahoo Board of Directors how that works.

Dear Vigilant Eye On eBay
I've been EV-SSL for over 5 years. So, .....but I understand your point.....
I do believe there is an unspoken war on small businesses.
Trying to extort money from us via "Adsense" etc....
My unique product has always sold itself.  The "controllers" throw up road blocks more and more now, playing games with search.
Seriously, I miss the great outdoors. My life is more important to me than jumping through the ever growing number of hoops to sell my product.
It's a nice product, but I won't let it consume me....
IT'S THE WEEKEND ! ! ! !

I've said it for several years.  Google would love to have 3 million micro or small sellers  give up. They only want to deal with entities that have large ad budgets.

Scare off shoppers? How about Store owners:

The eBay Stores (ALL OF THEM) URL security lapse continues, as of today; as a known issue it has definitely adversely impacted sales and traffic over the last 3-4 weeks.

We are opening product sales on ToucanDeal.com ASAP as a full backup, on their fully secure e-commerce platform that imports listings to include images from eBay.

There they seem to avoid much of the legacy issues with basic code unfortunately long overdue for a fix on eBay.
