The head of eBay Marketplaces North America Hal Lawton is leaving
to become President of Macy's. Here are some critical issues eBay sellers are left to struggle with as they take stock of his replacement, an executive from tickets marketplace StubHub.
- Search Glitch: Lower sales as eBay hides US sellers in search results
We described the problem in this blog post
a week ago, but eBay has failed to alert buyers or sellers through the Systems Announcement board
. Here's a letter we received this morning that shows sellers continue to experience the glitch:
"During the past 2 weeks, the seller discussion board has been lighting up of reports of eBay placing new listings under the "international seller" in search placement. These sellers are American sellers, selling American products, to American only buyers. No international mention anywhere.
"Not only are these listings now way at the bottom of the search page, they will not be visible at all if searched with the USA only filter or if there are enough listings for USA only. This weekend, I noticed a few of my items were not showing in search. If I used the exact title listing, they did show up but only under international listings.
"As far as I can tell from the boards, eBay customer service is either can't replicate the problem or is (not) aware of the problem."
- Immediate Payment Required: IPR no longer at sellers' discretion
Sellers object to eBay's decision to make Immediate Payment mandatory. eBay changed the policy without notifying sellers, as we reported in July
, and sellers continue to object to the new policy as it rolls out.
- Hidden Item Descriptions: Greater risk of returns
eBay is forcing buyers to click on a "See full item description" inside some listings before they can view the seller's full description of the item for sale, as we documented last month
. Sellers say this increases the incidence of returns from buyers who don't bother to click the link and therefore don't understand fully what they are purchasing.
- Guaranteed Delivery - Uneven playing field
eBay is giving greater visibility to sellers who offer Guaranteed Delivery; however, the program won't become available to all sellers until 2018. In late September, buyers will see the guaranteed delivery date on eligible items on the search results page and will be able to use a filter show only items that are part of the eBay Guaranteed Delivery program.
Those are some of the biggest issues we're hearing about from sellers. Let us know if we left anything off the list.
What would you tell Hal Lawton's replacement?
