eBay to Highlight Free Returns with New Search Filter

Sellers hate returns, but eBay is placing increasing importance on offering them, and free returns in particular. In a session live-streamed from the eBay Open seller conference on Wednesday evening, executives revealed some changes coming to the marketplace that will impact sellers.

eBay's Vice President of B2C (Business to Consumer) and Seller Experience Bob Kupbens said:

"We are going to create a filter that allows buyers to look at only those products that have free returns, and only those products that have returns.

"We think that's a great way of delivering on a new kind of buyer expectation. ...

"Our sellers then have an opportunity to get highlighted by offering that kind of advanced and enhanced return policy."

The head of eBay Marketplaces North America Hal Lawton added that eBay's search engine drives on three criteria: Relevance; Value (price, return policy, shipping cost); and Trust (great performance delivering, low defect rates, DRS scores). Lawton also advised sellers to refresh their listings if they aren't moving.

Watch the entire video interview with Hal Lawton and Bob Kupbens from eBay Open on this Facebook page.

You'll notice the executives failed to address what eBay was doing to crack down on buyers who abuse seller return policies, which might be a more effective approach to encouraging sellers to offer returns.

Hate it! Already forced to take returns for 30 days. I was getting used so often that I added a 15% restock fee. I added so many photos and so much to the description in my antiques and collectibles, that there's really no reason for the buyer to NOT know what they're getting from me. Caveat: I recently got my first negative though (been here since 1998!) because I charged a restock fee after buyer didn't look at the photos and wanted to return item. I gave her an immediate refund after the item was returned. She even SAID she didn't look at the photos until afterward. But still left a negative. (Feeling beat up)

This is what happens when your bring inept executives from outside eBay into the company who have no idea of eBay's terrible history with returns, sellers will not even list high value items any more because they know they will get ripped off buy eBay's current scam buyers who are members of criminal rings worldwide stalking eBay sellers.

Now KupBust wants to add even more idiotic polices that will reduce sales for eBay and increase risk for sellers, it must be embarrassing to be Devin and these clowns in top management, I guess they can't even read their own forums to see what sellers really think of them.

They have no idea of the incentive they are giving sellers to move to Shopify or Bigcommerce and to leave eBay altogether.

just check "no returns" and see if you get any sales at all.  I still don't understand how internationals can be happy with this because shipping to/from the US is expensive, except for China.  And then again, if you want to return something to China it's going to cost a lot of money and they will NOT want to refund your postage.

For the Xmas season eBay will be offering "If you don't like it, don't pay for it".  Here's how it works;
You list an item.
The buyer clicks on "Buy it".
You ship it (and pay the eBay FVF).
The customer gets it.
After they received it they have 30 days to have it.
If after the 30 days they agree they like it, they'll pay you for it.
If they say "Don't like it" they don't pay for it.
They still get to keep it, and you still have to pay the FVF to eBay.
This will reinforce that eBay is providing customers with the "Best value" anywhere, period.
Don't worry, you'll make up your losses in volume, it'll be awesome.

As usual - it just keeps getting worse. I've come to believe that TRP seller status just isn't worth it anymore. The hoops just keep getting higher.

...........a new kind of buyer expectation that morons dreamed up in their meetings that will drive more sellers to find new venues.

Yeah, these guys are as smart as Yahoo was when they ruined their email program by dumping ads on it just like eBay has done to the marketplace.

This is a great idea...but I suspect not for the reasons eBay admin think it is. ;-)
