eBay to Highlight Free Returns with New Search Filter

By: Ina Steiner

Sellers hate returns, but eBay is placing increasing importance on offering them, and free returns in particular. In a session live-streamed from the eBay Open seller conference on Wednesday evening, executives revealed some changes coming to the marketplace that will impact sellers.

eBay's Vice President of B2C (Business to Consumer) and Seller Experience Bob Kupbens said:

"We are going to create a filter that allows buyers to look at only those products that have free returns, and only those products that have returns.

"We think that's a great way of delivering on a new kind of buyer expectation. ...

"Our sellers then have an opportunity to get highlighted by offering that kind of advanced and enhanced return policy."

The head of eBay Marketplaces North America Hal Lawton added that eBay's search engine drives on three criteria: Relevance; Value (price, return policy, shipping cost); and Trust (great performance delivering, low defect rates, DRS scores). Lawton also advised sellers to refresh their listings if they aren't moving.

Watch the entire video interview with Hal Lawton and Bob Kupbens from eBay Open on this Facebook page.

You'll notice the executives failed to address what eBay was doing to crack down on buyers who abuse seller return policies, which might be a more effective approach to encouraging sellers to offer returns.

Someone who uses a filter to search for free returns is not committed to buying your product.  They will be doing those who do not offer free returns a big favor by using the filter.

It is clear to me why eBay has so many returns. They do everything in their power to encourage returns.  The power of suggestion is indeed quite powerful.

You know what feature I'd actually find useful in search?  Put two sets of search terms and find sellers that have both items in stock.  But they've got so many sellers conditioned to offer "free" shipping that it would hardly matter anyway.  What a clusterfuck the site has become in its drive to force people to show the way it wants them to shop.

"If your items are not ultra expensive to ship free returns are a VERY good idea."
The minimum Priority box charge is about $6.  We can't all sell iPhones or iPhone covers!

eBay is dead, their search engine is poor, they can't serve web pages to users, see Down Detector comments, they advertise on TV, then buyers can't use the shopping cart to buy because that is screwed up so bad it does not work, eBay wants sellers to pay them for stores ???

What solutions do the crack executive team dream up to increase sales ?

Free returns for 6 months ?

Guaranteed delivery, price matching ?

This is not going to make a difference in sales, they are not going to 'move boxes' that way, grasping at straws in a vain attempt to compete with Amazon is all the executive team has ?

These guys need to be fired, a new CEO from outside the company needs to be appointed by the Board of Directors who is willing to clean house and rid upper management of these delusional executives who have no concept of reality, running ads on TV when your core market does not even watch TV is wasting time and money and is not 'moving boxes', sales have been deader than dead on eBay since they started this ill advised 'add color to your life' campaign.

What does that even mean to the average person ????

Nothing, the same thing it means to sellers who are eBay's biggest buyers.

This is the real eBay reality, anyone who denies it is delusional like eBay leadership is.

Rexford exactly states my feelings. What kind of person would look through listings to find items with free returns unless they had already made up their mind that they were going to use and return what they "bought"?

Just when you think eBay can't get any worse for small sellers, they do.

eBay is trying hard NOT to try.

Its become so easy to just drain your sellers and not give a damn, but at some point - you run out of suckers ... oops SELLERS to do that to.

Alot of sellers that I bookmarked have NOTHING for sale - at least not on eBay. I see them at local shows and they have PLENTY of items - its just they cant deal with eBays BS.

You dont need 60 day returns for %99.999999999 of the items in the universe - either you got what you ordered and it works OR it doesnt.

eBay likes to push EVERYTHING off on someone else besides itself - returns/free returns/snad returns - are all an attempt to make sellers in waranty people - makers or 3rd party warranty companies.

Comparing small sellers to Walmart is unfair and a lie - all of us WISH we could get the terms and have the power that they do. I used to hear it from manufacturer reps - the one ones who visited Bentonville AR - and they werent pretty. They got bullied on price, on terms and on returns and were told NOT to come back unless they agreed to the terms .... but then again when you are the 800 pound gorilla ...  who wold any of us bully? to get ANYTHING done?

eBay is what it is - a place for the luck few rich executives to make easy money for doing NOTHING.

For the amount of $$$$ they made off the stupid eBay Open thing - they could have made AL of their sellers whole visa via fake SNADs. But its seems its easier to take pics of people with stupid hats and get drunk then take care of your sellers.

sad indeed

This dud Bob KupBust was hired to be the seller relations guy but he is coming up with bright ideas to screw sellers even more, they should put this guy in charge of the fraudulent feedback that eBay allows scammers to leave honest sellers while they are at it, and the returns department that steals billions from sellers over the years on fraudulent return claims that eBay is doing nothing about,

This guy is a typical eBay hire, a dud of the greatest magnitude just like Donahoe is and was.

@ Chicago48

When a scammer sees a restocking fee they just claim SNAD

As a seller you have no way to win against bad buyers. . .

Bob KupBust quote below.

VP Seller Experience” said: We think that's a great way of delivering on a new kind of buyer expectation.

LOL, a 'new kind of buyer expectation' ?

That Kupbust dreamed up and called a buyer expectation........

....and this is the 'Seller relations' executive ?

Another failed hire by eBay along the lines of Donahoe..........

More from the misguided Bob KupBust the seller relations guy who claims that this is going to give sellers more exposure, this guy is a loony tune.....

"We think that's a great way of delivering on a new kind of buyer expectation. ...

"Our sellers then have an opportunity to get highlighted

These dummy executives keep putting their new ideas on the sellers and sellers hate them even more, then they wonder why eBay is seen in such a low light buy the biggest buyers on ebay, their sellers.

Returns are not a problem in the categories I sell in.  Since I average perhaps 1 return per 4000 sales, I am going to offer free returns as well as mention in my listings.

So if I sell a product for 1.99 and it costs 2.77 to mail it plus fees, where do I get the money to have someone return it for free because they changed the party theme or found it for 2.97 total at the local Walmart? Do I raise the price to 5.99 for everyone plus another shipping charge, sounds high.
Are the free returns store credit only?
It will be a cold day in hell before I offer free returns on ebay.

There's a site I'm on Tradesy.  If the buyer wants to return the item, they return it to Tradesy and Tradesy resells it out of their warehouse.  The seller never knows it was a return and why it was returned.  If Ebay wants free returns then that's the way to do it.
