eBay Sellers Frustrated with Unwritten Policies

By: Ina Steiner

Many sellers live by the maxim, if it isn't in writing, don't trust advice from an eBay customer service representative. We've read plenty of reports from sellers who say they've been burned by following advice offered over the phone that proved to be incorrect.

Now comes acknowledgement from an eBay moderator on the company's forums that many policies are not available in black and white on its site. A reader who forwarded the thread wrote, "Maybe I am wrong on my thinking, but if you are not able to find the rules anywhere in writing, how can you possibly follow them?"

The moderator, who often is praised for his helpfulness in resolving problems on the board, was participating in a thread in which a seller ran into difficulties and had their problem resolved. But the issue (involving returns) generated some interesting discussion about how to respond when such problems arise.

Here's the part of one of the eBay moderator's responses that our reader found troubling:

"As for your other point regarding policies not directly stated on the site, I can clarify that the vast majority of our policies are not publicly stated. This helps to minimize abuse of our protection programs, as those who seek to commit fraud are not able to exploit some of our procedures. Part of what I can help offer here on the boards is education and clarification when the written policies do not fit the specific situation. Every situation is different and unique and not every one will fit neatly under one procedure or another.

"When information is relevant, it is provided. Emails are sent with next steps for situations like this even though the details are not given on the help pages. Certain protections are available to sellers that would not be spoken of before they are needed, and at that time would be shared. This is a very common practice with various protection programs and while I can understand the desire to be knowledgeable on what to expect in a case, we are not able to provide all details about every process and also ensure the highest level of protection. Some things simply need to remain internal."

The reader said, "How are sellers ever supposed to be able to run a business on eBay when the vast majority of their policies are not publicly known? That makes it so eBay can just change the interpretation at will depending on the buyer and seller involved."

Before commenting below, read the entire thread for context. The discussion is worth reading to see the kinds of problems that sellers encounter, how eBay deals with such issues, and what happens when the right eBay moderator gets involved. The specific post in question is #60.

Anyone see a trend here at eCommercebytes?. Almost always starts with 3 stories bashing eBay (sometimes Etsy) and then a positive story about Amazon. And the usual professional whiners chip-in with usual caustic cheers.

So, 'most' of the policies aren't even in writing; sellers are therefore on 'double-secret probation' - forever! No, it's WORSE than that; there ARE no policies; the Customer [non-]Service Rep's can just make stuff up! And if you dare complain they'll tell you that the CnSR was enforcing 'unwrittten' policy.

I didn't see the positive Amazon comment but I will offer that I have had to send about 3 labels to Amazon buyers and none of them got them the first time I sent them. One finally found it, the other two I had to re-send. However, you have to make your own label so of course you can see it. But it would probably be helpful if we knew how or where it appears for the ebay buyer so they can be advised on how to access it.

...And then an eBay cheerleader shows up, using their 5th ID, and starts to bitch about Ina reporting the facts? Anyway, hold on tight to that Kool-Aid, you're going to be extinct soon

@parkplace - Im sorry you are all upset about what you call "eBay bashing". For most of us, its simply a reflection of the aggravation and heartache that eBay causes us each day. Thankfully, Ina gives a place to discuss it all.

Not all of us are on the same page when talking about eBay. Some like me are way more "ferocious" about it. I've been wronged MANY times by (as BOB says) "my partner" and yet that hasnt happened on AMAZON.

Some here are more gentile and forgiving. They try and see the positive in it all and believe that what they do to sellers is NOT on purpose.

We all agree to disagree, but yet still respect each other.

HOWEVER - if you would like - MAYBE you could start a NEW TREND and have a daily column on "WHAT GOOD THING EBAY DID TODAY". I'll be fair, I'll read it - Im sure that the billion dollar corporation in San Jose did SOMETHING good today - at this point I'll TAKE ANYTHING!   Did they give money to charity? did they help out new sellers in developing countries? did they put a new park for kids in somewhere?

OR did they just shaft their sellers again?

Amazon ISNT all peaches and cream - not at all. From their forced 30 day returns, to their gating of brands - theres ALOT of bad to be spoken about.

BUT THEY DONT LIE - and thats where the wheat gets separated from the chaff ......

PLEASE, go ahead and regal us all on the wonders of eBay :)

That's their lazy way of justifying why eBay employees are flying by the seat of their pants when making decisions. Their policy pages should start with one sentence in large font ''Note: What we do to end your listings, manipulate your placement in search results, etc. is simply the Cost of Doing Business on eBay''.

parkplace  a trend ?

The trend is ebay way of doing things. They know how to trend us out of our minds.

By the way, I sold 12 items today on Amazon and none on eBay.  Trend that!

I ABSOLUTELY DREAD the times I have to contact ebay CS...

Selling since 2003 I have only had to contact them TWICE. THANK GOD. But every time I do, I have to point out their polices and procedures for them! They constantly tell me what Im trying to do cannot be done but yet its right there in black and white in their policies. By the end of the call, having to be transferred to a supervisor, they tell me I am correct and a ticket will be issued. Things are usually fixed within the week. Just knowing that most CS reps have ZERO clue about their own policies is quite scary. With all of the buyers committing basically FRAUD allot of the time and having ebay side with them makes me extremely hesitant to list expensive items.

I have learned to list my new/used items with DETAILED (should say EXACT because too much detail will bite you in the butt) descriptions and multiple photos. Also if I sell "for parts only" I make sure to put in the listing IN BOLD and multiple times, BEING SOLD AS IS, DOESNT WORK, FOR PARTS ONLY, NO RETURNS. Also, prior to shipping I send a message to the buyer letting them know the details and if they are ok with that and I get confirmation only then will I ship an item. Its just become too much of a liability to list expensive items any more. Especially sending over seas.

Seriously without fees from sellers what would ebay be? Another online alibaba or Target? I love ebay so dont think Im complaining, I just wish they would treat sellers a little better.
