EcommerceBytes Revs Up with New Publishing Platform

By: David and Ina Steiner

We've rolled out some changes today as we put a new "engine" into what we like to think of a classic. It's the same EcommerceBytes, with a slightly different look on the homepage and more horsepower.

We have moved the Newsflash and Update publishing platform to WordPress. We feel that this update will help us in a few ways:
  • To make our site load faster
  • To make the site layout responsive and mobile-friendly
  • And to fulfill a frequent request from our users: allow comments on the articles
At this point, we are not making any changes to the blogs. The layout of the blogs will change slightly to more closely match the main site, but that will happen a little down the road.

You can continue to comment on the EcommerceBytes Blog, AuctionBytes Blog, and Letters to the Editor blog using your existing credentials. The change to a new platform for our articles means you can create new WordPress credentials for our main site and leave comments for Newsflash and Update stories. If we find that readers aren't shy about commenting on the articles with new log-ins, we'll consider moving the blogs to the new platform as well, so they too are easier to read.

Like our readers, we don't like change for the sake of change, but making our website easier to read on mobile appliances is long overdue. Our legacy software has been in place since 1999 (yes, we've been at this for a while).

With this change, we can focus less on the technology of running a site, and more on the content we provide. You can continue to count on us to bring you news and information about selling online - our goal is simply to make it easier for you to read the content and weigh in with your thoughts. (You may have noticed our email newsletters are now easier to read on mobile devices too!)

We hope you'll be patient and let us know if you run into any bumps in the road. We'll be monitoring this blog for feedback and suggestions.

David & Ina

I tried commenting on the new articles, but it wouldn't accept my email ID and password. I can use it to comment on the regular boards though. Do we have to create a new ID and password to comment on the new articles?

Beanie,

Yes, you will have to register on the main site to comment. You can do so here:

It's
not ideal, but we felt it was better to let users choose to register rather than merge databases.

David,

Yes I know how to adjust the size but if I do that then it will be the same for the rest of the site and the part that is important will be to small (the blog). LOL
Still have not checked it on my tablet yet since I have not received an email from you guys for a while now. They have been coming in here and there with no rhyme or reason. Never paid much attention since by the time I look at the email I have already seen the articles on the desk top which I prefer since it has a keyboard and I have fat fingers for a mobile device (I dread texting).

@Bill - at some point soon we will be making the font sizes consistent between the blogs and main site, so it should make adjusting your screen easier. Regarding your email newsletter, feel free to contact me @ dsteiner@auctionbytes.com and I'll see if there's an issue with your account.

Just a note on font size. I am constantly using the Control-Plus and Control-Minus command on my keyboard as I browse the Internet, read email (sometimes email font sizes come in really small), and in Word docs.

It is second nature and I don't think about it.

I find that many people don't know about it - I find it is a lifesaver!!

Home page Looks Great, clean and modern, loads fast, win7 and win10 no issues,

Been using WP myself, for quite a while now, I like it,

Got to do some upgrading too, Next on the list is to get rid of our old V4 Vbulletin forum, it's like operating an old steamship, :(

Not to beat a dead horse, but I love to share tips that make life easier: You can hold the control button and use the scroll button on your mouse to change font size.

Yes Ina I have known about the CTRL scroll for years but I like things to be consistent. I have most all web sites I use at 90% some even down to 80%. My computer is set up to medium on the font size but I do have a large monitor because I like big screens. I know I am old but I am not blind. LOL

David, I will send you an email from my EB account.

Question for you. How do I change my email settings? I am using an old email that I have had since the '90's for my account but I did not see where I can change that to a newer email.

I only read ECB on a desktop computer.

I like the look of the new home page. I registered, but was informed I have to sign up for a Gravatar account to select an avatar for my comments. Very unhappy about that and I guess I will be sticking with commenting on the blogs.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, JackSparrow. You can now upload an avatar from your local computer without using Gravatar.

I pretty much always read the site on a tablet. Font size isn't an issue, I just pinch or speak my fingers til it''s a good size.
