What Do You Think of eBay's New Ad Campaign?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay kicked off a new ad campaign on Sunday with the theme "Fill Your Cart with Color." Many sellers will be pleased eBay is working to drive more shoppers to the site, and the company told AdAge magazine it's fully committed to TV as being a core component.

The publication said eBay is trying to differentiate itself from Amazon (the ad shows boxes on a conveyor belt followed by a question: "When did shopping get so beeeeeeeeeeeige"), but most of the packages featured in the ad are the exact kind of items you'd expect to find on Amazon - the only difference is that the eBay packages featured in the ad are wrapped with colorful tape on the outside.

"The global campaign introduces eBay's new brand positioning as a more colorful competitor to Amazon. It also aims to shatter misperceptions like the belief that most eBay goods are used; 80% are new, according to the company," AdAge wrote.

You can watch the commercial on the new landing page on eBay.

At least customers featured in the ad seem happy with their orders, with no mention from eBay about how easy it is to return items.

Update 6/8/17: eBay blogged about the campaign here. Excerpt:

"Phase 1 introduces the theme of the campaign: "Fill Your Cart with Color", which celebrates personal expression and individuality, establishing eBay as THE place to find unique items. The new creative is bold, fresh and spirited, showing off the uniqueness of eBay shoppers."

Phase 2: "Next, we turned on a fully integrated marketing campaign across many channels: cable and network TV, internet video and display, and social media platforms. The bold, colorful creative draws you into an immersive shopping experience, revealing items you didn't even know you wanted."

eBay said Phase 1 set the tone, while Phase 2 was "all about getting buyers to take action."

TOOLFOOL - can you please contain your stupid remarks to ONE post - instead of clogging up Inas website ?

Look - its either we (the adults here) listen to what Wall Street & the industry says about eBay or we listen to a drug dealer .. I think I know who I would listen to.

And if you think Im wrong or lying - go sell some 420 (pick any street corner in LA) and then go get a subscription to Internet Retailer, TWICE, Dealerscope and READ it for yourself - in between the brownies.

Im not hidding my ID - you're blocked anyway - so its irrelevant. MY ID is theheadphonecompany.

Yes - an EXECUTIVE - I didnt sweep the floors like you.

At 58 - your hardly old enough to be my anything - never mind daddy - Im 51, COLLEGE EDUCATED, and NOT an eBay lackey.

Turn on a laser? ANytime IN REAL LIFE that you want to match degrees and talents _ im here. But what IM NOT is a drug dealer, grower, or seller.

LMAO - you pushed the ON button on the laser, then cleaned up the floors from the scrap metal - no you sell pot - seems like a sideways move to us :)

Maybe the next topic on ECB should be a duel between Pace & Tool.

@eXtinctBay - I'll place my bet on Pace. Toolguy loves eBay when he's munching on his "special" brownies, and hates eBay when his head has cleared. He's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Tool.

Its my own fault ... sometimes I just cant resist answering him - een though I know its stupid.

Its not like I make stuff up. Sure any of us can disagree - its how the world works.

BUT, when I quote something - its not making up stuff, its not my opinions - its stuff that I get from industry sources.

Its not my fault that internet sales grew (as a whole) %15 this yr and eBays only grew %3. Like me or hate me the numbers DONT lie.

When the magazine says that eBay isnt in the top 15 sellers of clothing on the net, yet people who are closing stores (jc pennys as an example) ARE on the list - it tells you what eBay is doing sales wise. And again, its not ME making this stuff up - if Ina would allow attachments - Ill post it all.

However, the majority of us can see these things for ourselves - with or without the magazine articles - based on our sales (or lack thereof) and the treatment and behavior of eBay itself. If thats not enough - eBays forums are FILLED to the brim with horror stories .....

Tool thinks its love or hate, cheerleader or detractor, and I dont know if its his education (or lack thereof) or his drugs - but if you have a CLEAR head - its not either of those 2.

ALL of us would rather that eBay be a better place to sell. ALL of us would rather be packing boxes then posting horror show stories here and elsewhere.

Ina didnt "design" this place to be an eBay bitching fest, but sometimes (most times) eBay just does it to itself.

If comparing eBay to Amazon hurts anyones sensitivities ...... we can GLADLY compare eBay to Walmart - since they are #2 after Amazon ... does that help anyone?

I promise I will try my best to not reply to toolfool's ridiculous statements - but sometimes the stupidities makes ones blood boil and "you end up just having to clarify the insanity"

@ Valaset (whoever this apparently new poster is :-)

The world hasn't come to end. Over the many, many years I've been posting here I've said one or two good things about ebay. But there's been little good to say about these man eating sharks and an overwhelming abundance of egregious and justifiable complaints.

My business is still profitable because I know how to run a business IN SPITE OF EBAY.

Having said that, when The Ho's Cassini decimated my business that took me ten years to build from $30,000 gross monthly (without manufacturing or distributing drugs) to less than $10,000 virtually overnight I vowed to spend the rest of my life reciprocating.

These B school jargon spewing greedy piranhas desperately need some knee cap crushing karmic lessons of what it's like to have your livelihood ransacked.

Ebay management destroyed hundreds of thousands of both fledgling and established small businesses, and it's payback time.

Bobby Kennedy once said, "Don't get mad, get even."

I got mad at first, calmed down, and then began getting even with this criminal corporate enterprise and Corleones who run it.

Further, when I see the same seller destructive things happening on other sites, I will NOT keep silent.

Walmart could trounce amazon if they had the right mind to. They have more real estate where stock is stored that they could easily do one day free shipping.

But on the same token, Amazon could trounce walmart if Amazon decided to open retail stores all over the place.

The winner to me, is decided by who acts first: amazon with retail stores or walmart with online presence free 1 day shipping.

ebay...they are not even in the competition because ebay are idiots.

It's very clear what e'Bay's focus and target demographic is now.  Flashy and professional (and expensive) Notwithstanding, they're trying to impress children who's idea of what is important and worthy of their short attention span is more fickle than the wind.  It's eBay's ''vision of the world''.  Which is why eBay will continue to promote what THEY believe is 'best' for 'their' buyers.

What their focus is not upon, nor will ever again be upon, is the seller's (more importantly the buyer's) of the unique, antique, collectible, or quality used items.

That makes it easy to denegrade those sellers by claiming THOSE sellers are 'failures' as a result.  That's no less than insulting.  It's also neither surprising, and no less than typical from those who would spew such unsubstantiated venom.

Fact is, it was eBay who acted unilaterally, and borderline illegally, to dismiss, disrespect, and disadvantage an  uncountable number of quality sellers of such ephemera via their 'innovative' disruptions over the past 9 years.  They did so BECAUSE of their myopic focus on 'new'.  It was NOT because those sellers were 'bad'.  Because they were not, despite the newsworthy exceptions used as 'tools' to justify eBay's machinations.

I also note the commercial does not specifically refer to Amazon; that's been read in - probably because the comparison is 'natural'?  But there are multitudes of other eCommerce shipments made daily; more than eBay and Amazon combined.

All in brown (not beige) boxes.  Or of late, poly bags.

Regardless, eBay's flash, smoke, and color, is no longer don't distinguishable from anybody else's now.  (They all use the same ad agencies now, no?).

eBay HAD the lock on being unique.  They ''let go'' of that sucessful past, instead of leveraging upon it.

I'm constantly amazed that a group with the collective knowledge of the sellers who comment here can't make their point without personally sniping at one another.

I don't come in here very often (if at all) to ask for a little civility. So I'm saying it now - elevate the discussion without the little personal digs. It dilutes the quality of the conversation, and dissuades new people from joining in and giving their perspective.

So what items in the commercial were ''unique'' and found only on eBay? The kayak, the leaf blower, jet skis, fly fishing...what exactly?  I get that everyone in the world is unique and no two snowflakes are the same. Trying to redefine the word ''unique'' won't change what the majority of the consumer world considers to be the definition. Ebay isn't Webster. Even repeating it over and over does not change it or make it so. One of the ways for something new to be unique would be to have the item be specially made and not mass produced. The question to eBay is do you want buyers or lookers? Do you want to appeal to everyone or do you want to sanction off all those, both buyers and sellers, who    will always consider eBay for its successful, unique past? Maybe the question should be what is relevant?

They arent advertising up here in the North East (that I have seen) .. I guess NY/NJ/PA/CT etc arent important ... dummies.

While the topic is an intelligent question - the answer is self evident ... eBay's issue is NOT advertising or lack thereof. eBay's issues are pages long, but they can be summed up in one line.

STOP angering your sellers and chasing them off.

Whether as a seller you have my and others issues with fake SNADs, abusive returns, or moronic VERO complaints - or even shipping issues that penalize heavy items ... its all different items in the same wrapper .. eBay not knowing how to do anything, run by people who were bankers, lawyers and stock brokers and NOT people with retail backgrounds .. who make insane rules "just cause some MBA said so".

If you dont fix THOSE things - it will still always be the same "the emperor has no new clothes".

''''The new creative is bold, fresh and spirited, showing off the uniqueness of eBay shoppers.''''

Seriously?

Fresh?  Unique?  As in....the same (mass produced items) as everyone else?  Like eBay's most recent previous ad showing sucessive ''unique'' fashionistas snap-grabbing the (latest 'trendy') shoes/dress/purse that just walked by?  So they TOO can look 'unique' in their uniformity?

New creative?  No.  Chase and copy.  THAT is what constitutes eBay 'style', and has for a decade now, ever since they 'let go' of the truly unique they had a lock on.

And the ad itself?  Just like all the other latest pablum color box ad styles being gurgitated by Madison Ave. and being passed off as 'creative' of late.  Then again, the 'street' has no imagination either, so they'll be duly impressed, no?

Forced enthusiasm.  And that's not even the worst of this phased bloviation....

''''The bold, colorful creative draws you into an immersive shopping experience, revealing items you didn't even know you wanted.''''

Um...no.  Draws one in?  ''Immersed''?  More like buried by pages and pages of duplicated sameness.  Do they even have a CLUE how many potential buyers their spit and duct tape glitch-prone site processes chase away by the second?  Buyers have no patience for that - especially when they can find the SAME EXACT 'unique' elsewhere, easilly, and cheaper.

That is, the item THEY were seeking, not what was shoved down their throats by a venue that keeps insisting THEY know what that buyer wants more than the buyer does, or is, apparently, now even aware of.

'Buy' into that 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' song and dance if you want.  Be that mindless, rudderless, pigeon-holed consumer they believe you to be.  Ignore the fact that the ONLY 'colors' eBay will ever care about are green and black; the latter actually reflecting nothing back, because it absorbs all the others.

Toto too.

The first round or two of ads were cute. The Christmas ads - not so good. The longer version ads are decent, but the short abbreviated version (that I happen to be seeing all over the place) is boring, boring, boring.  The ONLY reason it catches my ear is because I'm a seller. If I were just a buyer, it wouldn't make an impact at all.
