eBay Active Content Ban Could Impact Claims

If you're not prepared for eBay's forthcoming ban on Active Content, you could be negatively impacted if a buyer files a claim against you for Item Not As Described (aka a SNAD claim).

eBay held a chat session on Thursday where it answered questions about the ban on Active Content, which includes third-party applications like JavaScript, Flash, plug-ins, and form actions.

eBay reiterated that in June, active content will stop rendering in eBay listings.

The good news: eBay will not be blocking or removing the listings, at least for this year, although "There will just be pieces of your listing that may not function properly for your buyers."

The bad news: "This could impact your sales and even post-sales if buyers open 'not as described' cases."

We take that to mean that if there are parts of your listing the buyer can't see because eBay shut off active content in your listings, you may pay the price.

So you'd think eBay would do everything in its power to ensure sellers are prepared. However, those who rely on video to help buyers understand what they're getting should be particularly concerned.

When asked if eBay had developed a workaround for YouTube videos, which are considered Active Content, an eBay moderator wrote, "We've heard the feedback, and are actively working on bringing forwared a solution for Youtube video. The solution may not be in place by June, however."

Sellers - especially those who use video in their listings, should be sure to read the session in its entirety.

One observation: eBay is under-utilizing its Seller News board by not announcing helpful sessions like the one held on Thursday. Chat sessions are usually held on Wednesdays, and few were in attendance for Thursday's session on what is an important topic. Thanks to ShipScript's participation, some important topics were covered (ShipScript offers a tool to check your listings.)

Yep because it wouldn't matter what I said.

I said NOTHING about a "functional alternative".  Ebay rarely gets a new program right out of the gate.

And don't get your hopes up.  It isn't going to be a program that is closely related to the current TL program.  Ebay has said from the beginning, it will be in the new Seller Hub.

I'm glad they are banning active content. Java and Flash suck.

Heads up, this weekend I was shhopping on eBay ...there were at least a dozen listings that were not rendering on my iPad.
EBay may already be itesting their ban.

Couldn't find what I wanted ...Best Match was showing newbie sellers, sellers who dominate the category, and few free shipping listings ...and a lot of sellers with no returns (which is annoying as everyone knows buyers have the ...last word on returns.

Ended up shopping on another site and buying there.  Sad commentary on state of shopping on eBay.

@trying my best

Out of curiosity, why are you using Best Match as your search return option?

@ Scotty

I called Ebay yesterday and they told me that the Auctiva is considered live content.  From what customer service told me is that they will be removing the content and I don't have to do anything.  I have been deleting it on all my new listings but I am not going to go back and edit my old listings.  I guess in June I will see as you know you can get several different answers any time you call ebay.

Marie, I was using Best Match - as this is what I believe most shoppers are using when they come to the site.  I also was testing which listings/selections eBay thought would save me, a buyer, time in finding the perfect ''Best Match'' item to buy.  I found nothing.  In fact I became annoyed as searching for a size S - Best Match was showing me the whole range of sizes L, XL in their mix ... my title search had size S.

I usually search highest price first & scroll down as sellers who tend to price often deliver the value I expect. Over weekend I searched  with  all filters - different listings of course showed on first few pages.

I also believe buyers are not ''students of eBay'' - they come to the site completely unaware of Cassini, managements disgust fof small sellers ...they come to the site in search of specific items with good intentions to buy only to click out, as I did and purchase elsewhere.

Best Match search had nothing to do with exceptional DSR, feedback, free shipping, 14 or 30 day returns, 1 day shipping.  My only assumption is BM is based solely on recent sales & forget about everything else.

As a buyer I don't have time for eBay Best Match - too many other niche sites and of course Amazon  that make buying online fast and actually fun.
