eBay Management Speaks: Is It What You Were Expecting?

By: Ina Steiner

This was a year of tremendous change for eBay sellers. The head of Seller Experience posted a message for sellers today - did he address your concerns?
---
eBay sellers have jumped through a lot of hoops this year and continue to face technical shortcomings and questionable practices around policy enforcement. They've also seen new seller tools and a big TV marketing campaign.

The head of Marketplaces Hal Lawton left rather abruptly over the summer, and since the July eBay Open conference, there's been little communication coming from the selling team, despite a year of tremendous change.

Today, eBay's head of Seller Experience Bob Kupbens posted a note about the changes of 2017 in a blog post, "Bob's Blog: 2017 Retrospective - Looking Back While Continuing to Move Forward." He writes, "As 2017 comes to a close, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on our accomplishments and remind you that your partnership and the eBay community, is what sets us apart."

Take a look at Bob Kupbens' post on the eBay Announcement board, and leave a comment for him (one seller already posted their no holds barred reaction). Did he address concerns you have as a seller and give you something to be hopeful for going forward?

The disconnect between Ebay Execs/management and small to medium sellers exists because we have not been treated as either partners or customers. I am a longtime seller who Ebay encouraged long ago to come on board and build my business.  Ebay has become a micro managed marketplace with no sense of equality for a good part of the sellers.

If the customer was lucky enough to get the purchase made with multiple reminders that they can find it cheaper here , the encouragement to return it begins while continuing to show them they could have gotten it cheaper there. We have not even the ability to prevent a return by answering a simple question.

You create every roadblock to success with invisibility, poor customer service (not bad people, just have been given no ability to fix anything) , site glitches, and the search engine from hell or one that has been so manipulated it acts as such.  It seems like Ebay Execs feel no responsibility to their partners and customers that pay fees for stores and listing so they can do one simple thing. SELL

You create one insane unnecessary policy after another and our ability to sell is OUR FINANCIAL STABILITY FOR OUR FAMILIES. If we dipped deep into your pockets while doing NOTHING to make sales and you couldn't take care of your family how would you feel? WE ARE FRUSTRATED with the continual decline of our sales and the services that we pay for to make this work as our venue or platform while having more and more required of us with NO RESULT.

I would encourage a few Ebay Execs to get out in the trenches a little. When we can't sell, we can't pay our bills while you get paid regardless of OUR success. The problem is you CONTROL our ability to be successful for the most part. If you want to give high volume sellers a better deal than make it on the back end in volume based FVF reduction, not in search domination,

Every seller that pays fees to have listings should be shown and the consumer should be the one making the choice of who to purchase from. Not Ebay. This to me would be the true definition of venue.

If you refer to us as partners, then please act as our partners. If the term partner was a slip, we are at the very least customers.

LOL Tool, eBay does the same thing with false feedback on their forums by having shills who are not even sellers posting false feedback about eBay daily on the forums and getting real sellers banned for posting facts and truth.

In other words eBay management believes in smoke and mirrors and they also want the truth about their underhanded tactics hidden from the Board of Directors and Wall Street investors.

Studiolines, Devin does not care about your sales, he just wants you to pay a higher percentage when you do get a sale via promoted listings, inflated store costs which are a massive rip off.

Then Devin wants to tell you advertising on TV has increase your sales when it never had any effect on any of our figures, most of what you read on Down Detector and the eBay forums are sales are down and getting worse, even after the MASSIVE TV AD CAMPAIGN.

Maybe KupBust will ask Devin why he is forcing the new pages in MyeBay on sellers like the NEW PURCHASE HISTORY PAGE that they keep forcing down sellers throats that we all keep opting out of at every appearance.

The page does not even work and they keep forcing it on sellers, they just forced it on me again and it only showed the unpaid items, not the entire purchase history.

This is the continuing Devin folly of completely destroying eBay and the marketplace as we once knew it, he is dead set on making a complete abomination out of the eBay marketplace.

This CEO needs to be removed by eBay security from the HQ building, that is the only hope, he needs to be replaced by a CEO with an engineering background that understands web programming.

Minimum wage in Manila is $1.01 cents an hour

Minimum wage in California is $10.25 (going up to $15 in 2022)

PS: eBay was at SEMA this year, the biggest auto accessory show in North America!

Ok so you DIDNT read what I wrote.

1) even if the hourly rate is more in the US - what they would gain out of it would outweigh the costs

2) if it helped your partner - wouldnt you make the investment?

3) WOW they showed up at ONE WHOLE SHOW but dont actually sell anything so whats the point? (besides just trying to prove me wrong)

SEMA is 1/10th of CES, 1/2 of the NY TOY FAIR, and 1/2 of NY NOW.

But if you are so interested in comparing - EVERY single industry magazine (TWICE, DEALERSCOPE and the rest) IGNORE eBay. Do you know WHY? (or is it that hard to comprehend?)

LAST time there were at CES (8 yrs ago) they were laughed out of the North Hall. They had a banner that said "Manufactorers PLEASE let your dealers sell your items on eBay" ..... WFT? are you KIDDING me? Is that PROFESSIONALISM?  They even refused to talk to sellers .. the whole thing was a disaster.

Sure, go buy a car of eBay motors with no warranty and no back up from eBay. Fly out to rural Kansas to pick up your BARN FIND corvette ... ID ask what your on - but I know already.

So as a seller in NJ - thats my fault?

If eBay says "taking losses is part of business - here take one" - then let them eat that "loss" OR tell the wacko legislators in CA to rescind it.

Here are some facts for you to chew on!

CES 2017 attendance: 170,000

SEMA 2017 attendance: 70,000

Your post stated that CES was 10 times larger then SEMA ~ WRONG!

Online - yes why?

On Amazon (and they are hardly angels) you don’t sell you fulfill.

They make the sale, you don’t.

On eBay it’s supposed to be your sale, your listing.

It’s totally different- is that your argument??

Was just reading the discussion board on Ebay. Brought to attention AGAIN that Ebay has abandoned the core market that they OWN for the everything else market that EVERYONE else is in. In abandoning that core market you have also abandoned the sellers of those items. Small to medium sellers that have built their livelihoods on the site.

Devin does not care about the original mission of eBay, he is the guy who as head of marketplaces recruited vendors from China to list on the US facing site when their listings should only show up on eBay China.

eBay could improve the US facing site real easy by only showing search results from US based sellers, but Devin sold US sellers down the tubes long ago, now sellers should give him a taste of his own medicine by moving to other venues and closing all eBay stores.

Sellers would be better off spending the cash they pay for an eBay store to host a Shopify or BigCommerce store that would enable a seller to network product to multiple marketplaces.

....and buy the way, no sellers can put faith in anything Devin does or says, he is the same guy who bragged at eBay open about taking down 3rd party ads that drove traffic off of eBay, but a few months later added them back.

Devin was also telling the world how vital Seller Hub is to the future of eBay in the same ridiculous presentation.

Got you shill buster, The partnership terms with Ebay are one sided and a seller is only as valuable to Ebay as their ability to pay the next bill.

@Pace306   I don't care who the customer service agents are, they are wasting their money and our time if you are forced to depend on CS that does not have the ability to do anything. My problem could have been handled simply on the very first call. Not solving a simple problem has now snow-balled into complete devastation.

No....if you are a 3P seller, YOU make the sale. Not them. Ebay and Amazon are the SAME. Just curious how you reconcile what happens there versus what happens on Ebay.

Serious question.

Tool - go read up on CES before you speak.

Sema is only cars - CES is the entire industry including Apple, Samsung and every other major company.

CES  takes over the old convention center all of the new one plus most hotels

As usual you have no clue what you are talking about.

Lastly you are comparing the wrong numbers. The Sema numbers you quoted are non industry attendees like yourself - ie people who go to see the cars on display. CES is not open to the public and those who attend are industry people - ie you are comparing the wrong things

CES attendance was 170,000

SEMA attendance was 140,000

SEMA is EVERYTHING automotive, which would include, stereo's, engines, tires, seats, car covers etc etc etc.

The world doesn't revolve around headphones!

But cars do revolve around the world ~ LOL

Its difficult to have adult conversations with people who get enjoyment from just acting like an @$$ - yes.

There's a reason he was kicked off eBay's boards - and from his responses here - which are not just opinions - but attempts to goad people - he should be banned here as well. But of course - thats your choice.

Based on said responses - it would seem that large amounts of illegal substances (which he admits to ingesting) are the cause of the responses. Thats not making fun - its just a repetition of his own admissions.

Getting back to the POINT ...

The facts (about CES vs SEMA) speak for themselves.

CES 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of the largest global gathering of innovation and showcased the connected future of technology.

With more than 4,000 exhibiting companies and exhibit space of more than 2.6 million net square feet, CES 2017 was a record-breaker, welcoming the world’s biggest companies in addition to hosting more than 600 startups at the Eureka Park Marketplace.

More than 180,000 industry professionals, including more than 58,000 from outside the U.S., convened in Las Vegas to drive the ever-evolving global technology industry forward.

CES encompass the following industries (which is way more then just car parts and hoopty rides from Gas Monkey Garage and Diesel Brothers.

Health/Digital Health Summit
Auto (all major car makers)
Audio (home and personal)
Watches
Acessories
Personal Computers
Financial Planning

Connected Home
Distribution (electronic and physical)
Baby/Infant Technology

Connect2Car
AI and Robotics
