eBay Management Speaks: Is It What You Were Expecting?

By: Ina Steiner

This was a year of tremendous change for eBay sellers. The head of Seller Experience posted a message for sellers today - did he address your concerns?
---
eBay sellers have jumped through a lot of hoops this year and continue to face technical shortcomings and questionable practices around policy enforcement. They've also seen new seller tools and a big TV marketing campaign.

The head of Marketplaces Hal Lawton left rather abruptly over the summer, and since the July eBay Open conference, there's been little communication coming from the selling team, despite a year of tremendous change.

Today, eBay's head of Seller Experience Bob Kupbens posted a note about the changes of 2017 in a blog post, "Bob's Blog: 2017 Retrospective - Looking Back While Continuing to Move Forward." He writes, "As 2017 comes to a close, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on our accomplishments and remind you that your partnership and the eBay community, is what sets us apart."

Take a look at Bob Kupbens' post on the eBay Announcement board, and leave a comment for him (one seller already posted their no holds barred reaction). Did he address concerns you have as a seller and give you something to be hopeful for going forward?

LOL, the 'community of sellers' that the community volunteers and paid shills acting as sellers running fake names and reporting to Alan who work daily to get sellers banned on the eBay forums for posting critical content and the truth.

What a joke, you know KupBust is blowing smoke just like Hal Lawton did at eBay open, then we have Devin on the stage telling the entire world with his Steve Jobs act how important Seller Hub is to eBay's future success.

Just like the Titanic was critical to the cruise ship industries success....

This is a comedy show eBay is running, don't know who they think they are fooling, other than Wall Street with all their buzz words, AI, Augmented Reality and so on, reality is they are taking control of the listing process with their idiotic catalog data that no buyer really reads or wants to look at while hiding the seller's product  description somewhere on the listing page between their sponsored listing cross promotions and the excess of catalog data.

What's next eBay?   Replacing the seller's themselves with your own inventory and catalog data.

a true partner would increase my sales not do everything in their power to stop my sales.

a true partner would look closely at cases, and not set them up for me to automatically lose no matter what proof i bring to the table

a true partner would not use my listings as advertising space for anyone else.

a true partner would not throttle my sales, all the while feeding a giant foreign government with as many sales of their fakes as they want.

a true partner would allow me to defend a strike against copyright before automatically believing a lieing corporate entity.

a true partner would use my fees to increase my sales

a true partner would use m y fees to increase my sales

a true partner would use my fees to increase my sales

eBay could bring Customer Service back to the USA but it would have to raise eBay fees to 15% and no more TRS discount.

Would you go for that?

I wouldn't. . .

eBay is like any of us, they want to make as much money as possible.

PS: I've been grinding an eBay axe for days with no results (reporting sellers selling 100% Positive Feedback) but I know where my money comes from and I don't want to kill the goose who lays my golden eggs! I have to act like I'm walking on egg shells. . .

Yeah Tool, keep quiet while Devin and his lunacy destroys eBay, it is already gone dude, Seller Hub, Promoted Listings, catalog data replacing sellers descriptions, next ebay replacing sellers themselves with AI and their own fulfillment.

Get real man, unless Devin is shown the door soon eBay will never recover, too many    changes these dreamers in top management dream up that the sub par programmers can't turn into reality that actually works and makes money.

eBay is already doomed and you can't see it, they are following the same path as Yahoo did when they ruined their business with unneeded changes, eBay was hacked as much as Yahoo was also and is being attacked by hackers by the day.

''...eBay could bring Customer Service back to the USA but it would have to raise eBay fees to 15% and no more TRS discount....''

And here is the problem with eBay.

WHY should they have to EVER raise fees to provide their paying customers (and even buyers as well) with a basic, acceptable level of service? And we are not just talking about offshore agents.

Because this company is obviously mis-managed, their revenue stream and profits are not being PROPERLY invested back into the company.

In other words, the priorities of eBay brass is to fatten their own wallets, and not spend money where it needs to be spent. No secret here.

There seems to be no explanation why (though it is a huge task) items a seller pays eBay Store fees to list are hidden, blacked out, or just shown to a limited geographic area. And how does a site which makes a great deal of their income from a percentage of goods sold place limits on what sellers can move??

Also, the constant glitches that are noted frequently on ECB are causing more buyers to leave, and not ever come back. Especially when they discover that a great deal of new merchandise they purchase on eBay is, in fact, shipped from Amazon (Prime) Fulfillment.

Wenig promised to mend fences with sellers following the Donahoe ''Noise'' era, and reconnect with us. Just as small towns are the backbone of America, small sellers who offer unique and unusual merchandise that cannot be purchased in a retail store are the backbone of eBay. And no one there seems to notice this.

Tool - I think you have the numbers wrong.

I’m not sure why you think it would cost that much - but even if it did, isn’t an investment in the platform and the increased sales it would make, not to mention the good relationships with its sellers worth it?

eBay makes BILLIONS of dollars - they have enough to spend with out raising fees EVER.

Who asked them to waste money on that welcome center or even eBayOpen?

They don’t go to CES or any of the other big shows - everyone else does - so they have money to spend right there.

They don’t own any inventory, they have no wharehouses, and unlike Amazon they have no planes or trucks.

You’ll have to pardon me when I call BS on your statement.

If you want an A class company then you have to build it and grow it- not waste it.

Cut the perks the BOD gets and cut the employee roster in half. There’s your money saved.

@toolguy:  I'm banned from the forums too!  I even wrote the Consumer Affairs about being banned....nothing came of it.

"Personally, it's much more treacherous on Amazon right now....and are the sales that much more than on Ebay to justify putting up with their crap? No, they aren't. "
Amazon has gated so many sellers so many items, it just might as well take over all the branding on all the items sold in the U.S.  Can't sell CDs can't sell textbooks, can't sell (new) beauty products....every day it's something new.
Does anybody really believe that Amazon wants to continue being a Marketplace for the small seller?  Seems they want everybody to sell through FBA, they keep building warehouses.

"small sellers who offer unique and unusual merchandise that cannot be purchased in a retail store"

These items are NEVER hidden!

It's the red blouses, iPhone 5 cases and beanie babies that are hidden. . .

As an old friend of mine would say: "Hope this Helps"

PS: eBay was at SEMA this year, the biggest auto accessory show in North America!

God, some of you peoples’ constant whining and misinformation gets so old. It’s been old on these posts for literally, what, 3 years now?

I always get US customer support when I call in and they have been quite damn good to be honest. I get one or two reps here and there who are clueless but it’s rare now. Meanwhile, what type of customer support are you getting from Amazon as a seller (and I’m pretty sure they have the money to hire US reps). Zero. Hell, the overseas EBay reps are actually more knowledgeable than the normal Amazon seller support overseas reps (and even if you do a million in sales per month on Amazon, you get the same crappy overseas reps).

There are a couple posters here who always have good comments....knowledgeable comments.

There are some of you who obviously are angry with Ebay but at least you have valid arguments as to why you feel the way you do.

Then there are some of you who obviously went on Alibaba and have a different tin foil hat for each day of the week.

Like I said, eBay;s top executives are a comedy show, too bad the show has not been canceled because it is getting old and boring now.

Bob talks about eBay's most successful ever TV ad campaign, what he does not mention is the fact that it is really the only one they have ever ran and it was not successful, if was a flop that had little impact on sellers figures.

In the mean time while Devin was busy attempting to bypass paying Google, Walmart inked a multi-billion dollar partnership with Google to drive traffic to Walmart.com which also includes as part of the deal excluding eBay.

Now if you care to call that incredible executive success you should all be fired now.

How do you manage to get US support every time you call?  I very rarely get anything other than the Philippines.

There is currently a two-week-old glitch in Bulk Shipping label printing that prevents International labels from being printed in the bulk process - only the domestic ones will print in bulk.  You have to print the Internationals individually.

Called eBay.  Got the Philippines.  Told rep to go to my account, and stepped them through what I was doing, step-by-step, and had THEM do the clicking on THEIR end, so they could see where the process failed.  They did the clicking, and indeed watched the failure happen, ADMITTED they saw the failure, and then proceeded to tell me there was NO PROBLEM!!!  They had never heard of a problem in Bulk Shipping, and what we saw was not a problem.  Unbelievable!

Had occasion to call eBay again that night to resolve a minor hiccup in paying my eBay fees (credit card company replaced swipe card with chip card and changed account number to do so and I forgot to update number on eBay).  This time got US support.  After he fixed the hiccup (in about 2 minutes), I offhand asked him if he knew anything about bulk shipping, figuring he might not since he's in "accounts receivable".  Not only did he know exactly how Bulk shipping worked, but he had indeed heard there was a problem - exactly the one I was showing to the Philippines support that they denied.  And that eBay's tech dept was already working on it.

All I was asking Philippines support to do was to inform me if they knew a problem existed.  If they didn't, then here is the problem, go report it.  Didn't happen.

If I had a way to connect to US support each and every time I called in, I might not be as angry with eBay either, since a lot of the problems I have with them might actually get fixed, or at least acknowledged and something eventually done about them.  Every time I call and get Philippines support, after the call I feel like I shouldn't even have bothered, as nothing got accomplished except an elevation of my blood pressure - they can't even acknowledge something they see with their own eyes.

Of course, if eBay's coders didn't BREAK everything in the first place, this would be a non-issue.

Every year ebay shares rise 4th quarter ... every year they raise fees, kill TRS a little more... making themselves look profitable along the way... it's all smoke and mirrors till this shit show is 6 feet underground.

Fee's will continue to rise, as the volume of sales declines, making that small profit buffer possible every year to make wall street happy.

Why does eBay allow this?

Reports fall on deaf ears!
