eBay Back to Running Ads that Take Shoppers Off eBay

In February, eBay announced it would remove third-party Product Listing Ads in May (it planned to keep the branding type of ads for insurance companies and the like) and replace them with seller ads called Promoted Listings. But sellers have begun noticing the return of third-party ads on eBay.

At the time eBay announced the change to its ad strategy, it explained, "Sellers have asked for increased visibility and for removal of ads which take buyers off eBay. With these changes, we are taking strides to provide sellers more opportunity to get added visibility and velocity for their items and to reduce competition from external ad sources. Limited third-party advertisements will continue to be displayed."

During today's weekly chat, a seller asked why listings were being populated with multiple off-site ad links. "The Bidding/Buying and Selling boards have seen a number of threads this week complaining about them," the seller wrote, and posted a screenshot showing ads that linked to retail websites including NiemanMarcus.com and Nordstrom.com - displayed on an ended listing for an article of clothing.

An eBay moderator replied, "it is a common industry practice to allow for 3rd party advertisements. While the majority of advertised items will be sourced from our eBay sellers, you will still see these kinds of ads from time to time."

Have you seen a return of ads promoting off-eBay retail websites?

ALL THE CHEERLEADERS  will say "Pace, you dont know anything - all you do is bash eBay over and over".

Ok true - I bash eBay - because they lie, cheat and steal ... but is there TRUTH to what I say dear friends??

I say that eBay is VERY nervous about the numbers - the %7 was all slight of hand. Sure the numbers were better - between the postal increase and the TRSP decrease, along with increased Returns fraud - the numbers can ONLY go up.

Why else are they NOW all of a sudden worried about seller-buyer communications AND why are ads the ads that take buyers off eBay (a cardinal sin that eBay aims to route out!) back?

Enter exhibit A) Twice Magazine. TWICE magazine is the industry bible on the consumer electronics industry - which now covers almost any and everything mechanical/electrical etc.

From the October 23rd issue concerning the upcoming holidays: when asked about sopping for the holidays: 78 percent of respondents said they are either completely or very likely to buy holiday gits online this season, and 66 percent expect to do so more this year then last year." (so far so good for all of us online sellers)

(heres the bad news for the dolts in San Jose)

"Not surprisingly, AMAZON was the NUMBER 1 online destination for holiday shoppers cited by 74 percent of the respondents. Walmart came in a DISTANT second (destination) with 11 percent and EBAY (listen closely cheerleaders and nay sayers - those that dont believe the numbers and the reality) with 6 percent.

That means that of all the people ....

%74 are going to Amazon
%11 are going to Walmart
%6 are going to eBay
%4 are going to Target
%2 are going to Bestbuy

You can twist this any way you want it, but the numbers dont lie.

You can fill your cart with all the color in the world - and you are STILL a %6 cockroach, why? 'cause the basis for your company is fraud and theft - just like adding these ads back into a listing that a seller has payed for - that is FRAUD.ANd that .... is not how to run a business.

Thanks, Rexford, for putting in a good word for Poshmark. I guess I can start migrating to their site and see what happens.
