Etsy launched a new checkout that lets buyers purchase items from multiple shops with a single payment - it's rolling out to buyers over the coming weeks. However, it only works for items where the seller offers Etsy's Direct Checkout payment system. (Here is a link to information about Direct Checkout if you're not familiar with the feature.)
Etsy explained in an announcement today, "Previously, buyers had to pay for items from different shops by going through the checkout process separately for each shop they purchased from. We know from our research that they would sometimes abandon additional items in their cart after completing their first transaction. With multi-shop checkout, purchasing from more than one Etsy seller at a time will be easier and faster, and that's better for everyone."
Some key points to note:
"If you don't have Direct Checkout enabled in your shop, your items will be in a separate section below the multi-shop-eligible items in the shopper's cart and buyers will need to purchase them in separate transactions."
"After buyers complete a multi-shop purchase, they'll receive an email from each Etsy shop they purchased from with the shop's unique branding, location and the seller's Message to Buyer."
Sellers are starting to weigh in - one who thought it was a positive move raised an important issue impacting sellers who offer items that can be personalized:
"This is a great feature! Definitely an added convenience for buyers!! With this however, I hope you will consider adding a text box variation to the listing page for personalized items. The note to seller box is often overlooked now and with multiples on one page, buyers may not understand that they have to input their personalization for each shop."
Given the potential for initial confusion and kinks to work out, kudos to Etsy for not introducing the new system during the holidays.
We were unable to test the system as of yet because it's not yet available for our account. Let us know what you think and if it's enabled in your account yet. |
