Changes to eBay User Agreement Impact Sellers

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is making changes to its User Agreement, and some of the changes have sellers wondering about the impact. The changes, which go into effect for current users on October 28, 2015, were announced today. Here are two sections that are changing that have the most potential to impact sellers:

Listing Conditions: In light of our introduction of the eBay Seller Hub, we updated this section to reflect that we may display information about the commercial performance of your listings to other sellers. Learn more about how our eBay Seller Hub works here. We also added language in this section to indicate that we may remove metatags and URL links included in your listing to improve third party search engine results.

International Buying and Selling; Translation: We added language to this section to indicate that we may automatically translate member-to-member messages into local languages where those translation services are available.

eBay is granting itself permission to edit a seller's listings by removing certain information.

Translating sellers' messages to buyers through automatic translation services could result in errors or misunderstandings.

One reader has already asked what it means when it says eBay can display information about your sales in the new Seller Hub. We've asked eBay - in the meantime, if you look at the screenshot on this page, you'll see there's a section called, "Study your competitors" along with the ability for sellers to "filter competitors."

Update: eBay spokesperson Ryan Moore confirmed this is the case - he provided a screenshot (you can view it on the Newsflash story). Bottom line, eBay is providing information to other sellers about your selling performance.

If you have questions about whether eBay will be revealing information about your listings in the new Seller Hub, such as listing price or selling price, you might consider asking during Tuesday's eBay Radio broadcast which is set up to answer questions about the Fall Seller Update.

We've got more about the changes in Tuesday's Newsflash. Be sure to read the full announcement, and let us know what you think here.

I guess ebay did not create enough angst and disruption by pitting buyers against sellers. Atmosphere isn't poisonous enough as it is so they are now going to set sellers at each others throats.

There has always been healthy competition among sellers - an sometimes some unpleasantness....but not out of control.

This "sharing" of seller's info can only be an attempt to create a race to the bottom.... a la
Amazon....

Maybe they should clean up their software and fix / prevent the frequent glitches before they introduce these complicated comparisons and translations????

I have concerns about their translation service. What assurances are they going to give sellers that the translations are correct? Because eBay hasn't exactly proven itself to be trustworthy. I can see the following:

Buyer sends (in his language): What it your return policy?

Seller receives (in English): What is your return policy?

Seller responds (in English): I do not accept returns for any reason.

Buyer receives (in his language): Send it back at any time for a full refund plus all shipping costs.

Because if any issues arise, eBay is "just a venue."

eBay must think that we're NOT racing to the bottom fast enough.

Devin Wenig and Brian Burke are now deviously using the User Agreement to create entirely new policies rather than using the semi annual seller update route.

The seller hub is designed to drive down prices even lower than they already are. These cretins don't understand that the more pressure they put on lowering price points, the more sellers will leave ebafia either by choice or through unsustainable losses.

Do they honestly think we sellers are are so dumb that we'll sell at a loss or at no profit?

Take a hike to hell, Brian Burke.

Looks like they noiw want sellers to emulate zappos......

Ebay sellers will have to raise prices to offer zappos return policies and free shipping both ways......and shipping both ways now improved with built in Ebay commissions.

As if that will solve the slow sales conversions that everybody is seeing in 2015.

THis is a complete disaster for any item that is graded.  A sealed or near mint vinyl record will be compared to a low graded record as if they were the same.  Same with any other gradable item.  Ebay will not have the right software for distinguishing the graded items or the originals from the reissues.  The more ebay screws with seller's listings and hard work; the worse it is to sell on ebay

Prediction :  less sales, from even less sellers,

I wonder if they eventually intend to show that Seller Comparison information to Buyers?

I agree about how impossible it is to compare ''Graded'' items. However, with books, they are already graded with, Good, Very Good, Like New. Have they finally figured out how to make Ebay listings look like Amazon's?

I don't understand why they are so obsessed with Amazon. Management has destroyed Ebay, chasing after the Amazon business model, which is totally different. Ebay had its auctions, vintage, one-of-a-kind listings, which Amazon couldn't touch.

You really wonder how absolutely dumb and arrogant Ebay's management really is. Don't answer that, because we all already know the answer, which has been proven over and over again.

This new comparison is close to being unethical, and malicious.

Others have mentioned race to the bottom tactics......yes, that is exactly what this is.

They can publish whatever they want, but I will still price my items as I see fit.  As most of us know, they themselves have driven the prices up with their meddling.  Prices had to go up because with sales so slow due to their meddling and Donahoe's disruptive implosion it is the only way sellers can possibly survive.

They just can't leave things alone. No wonder it is one of the most unstable ecommerce platforms on the web.

eBay's user agreement has had more edits than a George W. Bush Wikipedia page.

Not sure where ebay gets it's advice from, but I can tell you NO BUSINESS on this planet would want to share ANYTHING with a competitor

Another not wanted, unnecessary, stupid feature, only an idiotic company like ebay could dream up.

Btw, Zappos shoes are not cheap......

Ergo, no free lunch. Somehow the dumbos at Ebay think they can force free shipping both ways on sellers with no penalty.

If sellers go with this model, they have to raise prices to cover the 2 way shipping.
Ergo, more fees for Ebay......less sales for sellers.

''eBay Seller Hub delivers everything you need to grow your business right into the ground''

Why have a successful past when you can look forward to a dismal future.

Ebay's philosophy is a twist based on Murphy's Law. If things are going well for sellers, let's make them miserable.

I LOVE EBAY!

I've had this Starrett up for sale for almost a full year.

It's on it's 9th relist and I've dropped the price from $2800 to $1900.

Just SOLD it for a "Best Offer" of $1775

I bought the item from Boeing for $500. . .

Criagslist would have never sold this item locally, in fact my buyer is about as far away from me as possible!

Shipping is going to cost me at least $100. . .

Now here comes my eBay surprise!

Here's a note that I didn't see with the "OFFER"

You will not need to pay shipping. I will have you send NEXT DAY UPS on our account. If you can not send ups today then please do not accept offer. Thank you, Brad

OMG! Why do I have a feeling this might not end up being a good sale!

I'm thinking RENTAL. . .
