eBay Holds Sellers to New Standards in Fall Seller Update

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay will announce its Fall Seller Update today, which includes major changes to how it judges sellers' performance. And for the first time in its history, eBay executives will be available to explain the changes in person, as it kicks off a brand new "Seller Summit" in San Jose this afternoon.

One if the biggest changes: eBay will no longer use Detailed Seller Ratings in its defect rate, though they will continue to be displayed to sellers.

In fact, eBay sellers will be judged only on delivery time and two measurements that it says judges the effectiveness of the seller's customer service to resolve any requests for help.

eBay is changing how it calculates shipping time, which appears to be positive news.

Today's issue provides an overview of the changes along with more detail about the new Seller Performance Standards.

Be sure to read about the changes to eBay's returns policy as well.

Let us know what you think - and what feedback would you give eBay executives gathered at the Seller Summit?

Shoe on the other foot:
The ''New & Improved'' Seller Version of eBay:
1)All sellers go to 30 day handling time.
2)Sellers from same areas go to Vacation (no see) mode on an undisclosed date each month for undisclosed number of days.
3)Limit number of listings and do not list anything new until something sells.
4) Only sell limited quantities of low priced items.
5) Ship all items cheapest/slowest way
6)All sellers do not accept returns
7) Report all buyers who complain about anything and ban them if they complain to often (too much noise).
8) No international sells or sellers.
9) No free shipping
10) All shipping MUST include a no fee separate handling charge
11) Accept only Money orders/cashiers checks
12) All shipping must be paid at counter. No online shipping printouts.
13) Only sell to certain designated areas chosen by seller.
14) Once you have sold a certain amount, hide your listings until the next month begins.

As this does not make much good business sense, it is  reflection of the kind of logic I think eBay is using as a selling ''venue'' site. Their policies make about as much sense as the ones I posted here.

"How do you know how much selling experience Wenig has or has not?"

Apparently, someone is crazy enough to think that Wenig spends his time selling junk on eBay.

Ebay's world-wide practice of arbitrary seller suspensions continues unabated:

Hey Rexford,
USPS changed the delivery confirmation to tracking (terminology) and that is what they are calling it now.

The problem is is that with all 1st class mail, now tracking is included and the PO wants to appear FAST as this is now out for all to see, so to make them LOOK faster- they are TRYING TO SKIP the initial acceptance scan and are uniformly (it seems) trying to skip scanning each piece at the counter and relying on the distribution/sort center scan.

This strategy by the Post Office to go faster and APPEAR quicker needs to be sorted out between ebay and USPS before sellers get screwed.

The total # of scans IS better- but they are secretly trying to avoid doing the all-important acceptance scan because they are NOT meeting their estimated arrival times after all.
This is why there are different dates when you go to look at the tracking and this is why they are trying to skip the scan. This is why they quickly jump up and say they do the scan at drop off- but they don't.

(TRUTH IS is that ebay has NO IDEA how the USPS REALLY operates- they take the USPS at their word (like the stock market takes ebay by their words), but sellers who ship everyday know much better how the USPS actually works).
Ebay: USPS is trying to SKIP THE ACCEPTANCE SCAN so your update ain't gonna work.

Why would it take until Feb. to implement these new seller metrics changes? Maybe they can see who they can eliminate during the biggest selling and slowest mailing season of the year?

The USPS often misses scheduled pick-ups- 1 missed pick up of 5-10 items can cost a seller so we do not do it- that is the reason we do not RELY on USPS pickups- END OF STORY.
You can RELY on a scheduled 4:45 PM USASPS pickup if you want to but what are you going to do at 4:55 when the truck has not yet arrived?
WHO wants to be in that spot??
If you cannot trust the truck to arrive 100% of the time you had better go ahead and take your packages up yourself- these folks evidently have 100% confidence in the Post Office Pickups but many of us do not.

Dear askalice,
It is so they can lock you in to sell for Christmas and then backpedal like they always do- they will be acting like this update doesn't even EXIST come next February- the csr's will say "That's the 1st we have ever heard of that".

In 6 months, after the update, buyers will be forced to contact sellers before leaving FB- the seller will have 3 days...blah, blah, blah- February came and ANY CONTACT OPENED A CASE- Remember 2012??

Same exact play book.

New Seller standards.....will not help when you don't sell much.

Not much energy for this dying platform.....

Besides new 30 day return....requirement on TRS. TRS is now a burden not an advantage.

@nordicgal

Your buyer returned the item because of buyer's remorse over price. You likely will win if you appeal. I've won all my appeals as well.

You're seeing "more positive changes than in the last seven years.."

I take it you grasp that's not a coincidence, since The Hoe has been running this site [into the ground!] longer than that.

Hey, if this good stuff keeps up, I'll have to stop calling the new CEO "Devil Wingnut!"

I sell used clothing and although I now do hassle free returns within 14 days, I can't do 30. A buyer could buy a complete wardrobe, take a two week vacation, then return the whole purchase. All for a measly 20% in fvf. It's not really worth it to me. I like the new defect changes, though.

My head is spinning! For a brief few minutes I thought Ebay will actually made a change that is good for the sellers. And then someone slapped me upside the head. So when this change takes effect, Ebay sellers will be judged primarly on the efficiency of the US postal service or other carriers. I ship 90 percent of my items via USPS first class mail. Current TRS requirments require one business day shipping time. I checked tracking for three items I shipped Sept 8. The mailman picked these up on the afternnon of Sept 8. The first scan was on Sept 10! The mailman was too lazy to scan on pickup and the PO was too lazy to scan when the packages arrived at the post office that day. Nothing happened on Sept 9,as far a scans incicate. The finally someone pulled out a scanner on the 10th and waved it over my three packages!!!!! So, as far as i can tell all three packages fail to meet the TRS requirments of one business day shipping. Am I correct? My gut feeling is Ebay has found a way to eliminate the majority of TRS sellers. By this time next year all that will be left are the diamond sellers who are exempt from any Ebay regs. The new Ebay leaders have finally found the magic bullet!

Everybody at ebay from Griff to csr's said NOT TO WORRY about the new shipping time question- they said it will not effect you- now NOTICE that if a buyer checks that a package was "delivered late", whether it was or not- it CAN hurt the seller!
Also, with this lack of acceptance scans and this tracking requirement going back 12 months instead of 3 months (?) we all may be in for some big trouble as far as our tracking %'s go.

Since we will lose our TRS for not accepting 30 day returns, we will change handling time to 3 days. We'll still ship same day or next 99% of the time, but we need some wiggle room, because like everyone here has stated, eBay want to penalize sellers for things that they should penalize the USPS for.

I haven't been a hoop jumper on eBay in some time. There is business elsewhere. In eBay's current state, they should be the ones jumping through the hoops for sellers, not the other way around.

I do laugh. Over the last 8 years sellers cried out that JD was ruining eBay, but old hard head kept pushing changes full speed a head.  Now Wenig has to either clean up the mess or go down with  the ship.

Yes, those of us with established 5+ year  old web stores.....don't need Ebay anymore.

A few weeks ago we were all concerned with the new buyer on time question- Ebay and Griff said not to worry- it won't effect us.

A few people chimed in that Griff said not to worry, but we did.

Now, 3 weeks later it is an element that CAN hurt us.

Every time- EVERY TIME ebay makes a change it CAN hurt us.

This is ebays reputation.

Remember folks- ANYTIME ebay makes a change- it WILL hurt us.
