eBay Continues Practice of Seller Limits

By: Ina Steiner

The issue of seller limits has raised its head again. A Top Rated Powerseller said she received limits on her account and was absolutely astounded - especially because she pays the company hundreds of dollars a month in extra fees for an Anchor Store on eBay.

While we've been writing about seller limits since 2011, it was late last year that the issue really erupted after an eBay employee published an in-house document that showed eBay had "hidden" limits on seller accounts - something the company had previously denied.

In this recent case, eBay's email to the seller did not point to any problem with her account - rather, it said it was limiting her ability to list on the site in order to help her:

"This message is to notify you that in order to assist you in building a strong foundation for future transactions on eBay, we have placed a selling limit for your listing activity. These limits are not in place as a consequence, rather as a preventative measure to help our seller's keep from becoming overwhelmed with large increases in account activity."

Interestingly, we found a recent post on an industry board where eBay sent a similar email to a seller, but did point out problems with that seller's account: "While reviewing your account, we noticed a recent increase in buyer complaints and in your defect rate. To meet the standards required to sell on eBay, you need to limit the amount of buyer complaints on your account."

So in some cases, the limits arise as the result of some account issues - but not in all cases.

When the Top-Rated Gold Powerseller called to speak to a Customer Service Rep about raising the limits, she said, "He cared nothing about my protest that we still are expected to pay the full lump sum Anchor store fee but could not get the most out of it by increasing our inventory and thus our sales."

Ironically, eBay is running a month-long promotion in August in which it is giving sellers double the amount of free listings for their eBay Stores, as we note in Tuesday's Newsflash.

We'll have more on this in Tuesday's Newsflash newsletter - let us know what you think.

Toys-R-Us appears to have no selling limit: “toysrus” has plenty of feedback showing on its “Feedback profile” page for “During past month” …

http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=AllFe
edback&userid=toysrus&iid=-1&de=off&interval=0&items=200

but when one clicks on “View items for sale”, there are none! …

http://www.ebay.com/sch/toysrus/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=
200&rt=nc

and none showing in “Completed listings” either …

But, from the Feedback page you can bring up a sold item via the “View item” link, but when you get there there is no “View other items” link on that item page …

Apparently, there are no “items for sale” except via the “View seller’s store” link, but when you clink on any of the sub categories thereon, you still get zero listings! …

How do consumers find the products being offered by “Toys-R-Us”?

It appears that the Bain connection is losing its magic …

To clarify, my point is that if as an eBay Seller you have 1,600 items listed for 30 days, and sell 50 of them, then eBay may not see much "value" in your efforts even though your Feedback is 100% Positive and your performance is 5-Star for a year or more. "Show Me the Money". And yes, I do suspect that much of this has to do with physical limitations of eBay's service capacity which clearly seems on the brink of collapse and apparently has in fact done so in recent months.

@a_c_green,

I've made the same case to several AGs and other consumer regulators in the U.S. (and elsewhere) and not one is interested in doing anything about eBay's demonstrable massive fraud on consumers ...

So, what does that tell us about those agencies that are supposedly charged with protecting consumers from such racketeering shysters? Stealing small sums from the little person does not matter. Only if you steal from the wealthy or the powerful will the heavy hand of the law fall upon you ...

I'm just thankful that Ina and David have a forum where eBay sellers can actually tell their stories, and expose eBay for what they are. Can you imagine if this forum wasn't here?  Moreover, I get my news about changes on eBay before I get the news from eBay.

Thank you Ina and David!

Annie put into words exactly what I was wondering.

If you are paying for a store that gives you ''x'' number of listings each month but eBay limits you in writing to a LOWER number than ''x'' - that is pretty black and white.

The kind of stuff easily understood by an attorney or attorney general.

philip, I just viewed Toys R Us and found 66,842 items for sale. Maybe because you are overseas?

@nsc,

Maybe "overseas" is the answer,  but I did look at them via ebay.com. Did you utilise the links that I used/provided and get a different result to that which I described?

Yes I used your link and got 66,842 items.

I think that a goodly number of whacky eBay search artifacts are just that, unintended artifacts of their too clever by 'arf software run amok.

@ eBay Cares:  I am very glad to see someone from eBay comes here and reads these posts, and is willing to help.  I feel something "new" in the air by seeing a comment from eBay :) Hopefully, the new CEO is truly reaching out, and wants to help us!  I hope so--the eBay marketplace needs help and an overhaul desperately.  Just this past week, we've read stories about Etsy and Amazon, both eBay competitors, and how well they're doing!  Please, continue to report back to headquarters about what you read here and make changes--and make them FAST!  Thanks for reading. Signed:  a very weary and stressed out eBay seller

@IDKwhoIare - Is eBay Cares a bona fide rep for eBay? Is that email address for real?

Lets put it this way - the ID does not send up any red flags as being fake.

I don't care of "Ebay Cares" is a real rep.  And neither should you.  Jumping back into the Ebay rabbit hole is the worst thing you could do for your business.  Ebay is toxic.  They do not deserve forgiveness for the dependent businesses and lives they've destroyed.

@Troy
Trust me, I am not holding my breath waiting on eBay.  I still have a store but I moved off anything of real value and only list my top selling items that are under $20. All are niche items that few sell.  Funny, I still make that monthly amount that I talked about a few pages back with only 20% of the inventory.

I list on eBay by the rule of If I can't afford to lose it, don't list it.

I listen to anything eBay, or a rep, says with a jaded ear.  I am watching them and seeing if there is going to be any real ACTION to go with whatever they are spouting off this week. The day I go back to full-scale listing on eBay is the day they complete the list I wrote out on the ''eBay Dismantles John Donahoe's Pet Project'' thread.

@Ebaycares
We have been hearing the same excuses about Seller Performance Standards, Managed Returns, the insane "defect policy" and selling limits now for going on a year. "We are working on it" is no longer an acceptable answer!
Donahoe is gone, and there is a new guy in charge now... FIX IT BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!
Sellers are leaving in droves, and others such as myself, are working feverishly to move inventory off of Ebay. TICK TICK TICK

I had the same rule - I would only list items that I felt I could afford to give it away.

If Ebay really cared, and I have no doubt that they don't, they need to dig deep in the confines of their office headquarters to see if they can muster up some sort of a semblance of a moral compass to conduct business. If they did care, they would do away this defect system, that has penalized so many good sellers unfairly and destroyed their business. If they care, they need to address the bad sellers and buyers directly. Instead of investing in a bunch of changes in their system that is just asinine, or clogging their system with all types of technical changes that are unnecessary and does not work half of the time, use money and resources for addressing these issues. They need to return to an equitable feedback system.

At the end of the day, the proof will be in the pudding.

@ eBay Cares

    Whenever the mainstream press runs an article detailing a seller horror story arising out of ebay's ill conceived policies and its atrocious [non]customer service, ebay immediately comes forward, compensates the victimized seller, and claims that the horror story was an isolated and inadvertent ''one time'' error in the application of ebay's very fair, efficient and reasonable policies. The U.K. press runs such horror stories from time to time, and each time ebay reacts in the same exact manner.

  Of course, in reality, there exist tens of thousands of other sellers who had been victimized by the same policies and atrocious [non]customer service highlighted by the press  - and ebay does nothing to remedy the corrupt injustices to which it subjected those victims.

   Further, ebay would never change the policies involved - so going forward it would continue applying the same corrupt policies and atrocious customer service to its sellers, despite publicly claiming the news story involved a rare aberration from ebay's wonderful policies.

    Now, it appears that ebay is applying a similar damage control policy to horror stories published on ecommercebytes.  Don't be fooled.  Nothing will change.

      ''ebay cares'' asserts that ''We encourage sellers who have issues or concerns, to contact us directly.''  However, the OP did contact ebay directly and repeatedly.  He engaged in a herculean effort to reverse ebay's arbitrary and oppressive actions.  Ebay's [non]customer support treated the OP like a piece of garbage and did absolutely nothing to reverse this gross injustice.  But now that this gross injustice is being publicized on ecommercebytes, ebay is suddenly concerned and urges the OP to ''contact us directly.''

    Thank you for nothing ''eBay Cares.''
