eBay Clothing Sellers Get New Competition - from eBay

eBay is fond of saying it doesn't compete with its sellers, but it doesn't look that way today to sellers of used clothing. eBay has been promoting its own consignment service called eBay Valet, and today it acquired a company called Twice to help it power that service in the clothing category.
Founders Noah Ready-Campbell and Calvin Young posted on the Twice blog
that its technical leadership and engineering team will be joining eBay to help power eBay Valet. It will shut down the Twice website (LikeTwice.com), an online consignment shop for used clothing and accessories.
eBay used to encourage its sellers to sell on consignment through several programs, including the eBay Trading Assistant program, but it terminated the program
2 years ago, and eBay stopped providing those sellers with leads.
Since then, eBay has been testing in-house versions of consignment selling programs and has been building up the eBay Valet program. Its Head of Consumer Selling Vincent Payen said in the spring that by making selling online accessible to more sellers, "eBay Valet contributes to the wide selection of unique and hard-to-find items that are available on eBay."
eBay is now a standalone company after separating from PayPal at the end of day on Friday (and will be selling eBay Enterprise later this year). Its new CEO Devin Wenig, who had run the Marketplaces business, has said building up consumer-selling was one part of his strategy going forward.
On Thursday, Wenig told Wall Street analysts about the expansion of eBay Valet into fashion in the second quarter, saying eBay now accepts items for hundreds of designer fashion brands. "While it's still early, the value proposition of eBay Valet is resonating with sellers and driving strong repeat engagement."
