eBay Forces Shoppers to Click to View Item Descriptions

By: Ina Steiner

When visitors click through to an eBay listing, they can see photos and structured data at the top, followed by the seller's description. eBay turned on a switch on Wednesday evening in which some visitors can no longer see the description unless they click a separate button.

According to one user, clicking the button brought up a popup box containing the description. The user then had to close the box before they could see other parts of the listing page.

A seller wrote on the eBay discussion boards that she was "heartbroken" at the way the listing page now looks for her. "I spend so much time writing descriptions and taking great pictures. Loading them to the web, writing the HTML. I'm kind of heartbroken that the listing page looks so bad now."

She continued, "I just listed 2 antiques for more than a hundred each - who the heck is going to continue buying that kind of piece when the listing page is so ugly and difficult to read?"

Another eBay user was not so polite, tweeting, "eBay now wants to hide item descriptions behind a mouse click. What the actual fuck?"

They continued to vent on Twitter, "Whoever proposed that idea, and those who saw its implemention on the site for testing, have clearly never used the site before," and added, "eBay is frustrating."

However, not all users are seeing the new feature, which appears to be a test eBay is running. We asked eBay spokesperson Ryan Moore tonight if that was the case.

eBay... you stupid FU*KS!!!!!

This is NOT Amazon.. QUIT trying to be Amazon!!!!!

People who shop eBay LIKE that they can read an ACTUAL description from the seller and not just a blanket product information, it fails ALL THE WAY AROUND!!!
You want more business? Drop the stupid outdated store format, DROP all listing fee's for GTC listings.. and QUIT trying to control what information the seller is trying to get to the potential buyer!!!!!!

It's not rocket Fuc*ing science you retards!!!

The ONLY reason Amazon kicks your ass is because you don't allow the sellers to list for free... the more items.. the more transactions!!!

You want more sellers quit treating them like shit... Amazon is on the fast track to finding out just how much their gonna lose over the next few years buy getting rid of as many sellers as it can so you are posed to make a big comeback if you can figure out how not to Fu*k that up... God it would be nice if someone came along with half a brain that could fix either one of these companies.. or someone finally will create a new site that actually gets promoted properly and gets a buyer base... whoever does one of those three will win in the end.... My2Cents...

Just today I had three questions from buyers. I thought it was odd as all three adds had the sizes in the add. When I looked at my adds, sure enough, almost the entire description was hidden. So the potential buyers sent a question as they didn't see the description. Another senceless ebay improvement!

Why is Ebay still doing this??  I'm tired of giving negative comments on the "how do I like this" report....

It was a dumb idea when started, and I haven't seen anyone saying something positive about it except the Ebay brass.....

Grrrrr.....

Another eBay insanity. Most buyers don't want to read anything anymore as it is, and the ones who do have a hard enough time finding sellers who actually write detailed descriptions anymore. This only exacerbates the problem. It allows lazy buyers to not read a description that's there, then file SNAD. It continues to enable the lazy sellers who use the ''the pictures are the description'' excuse for items NAD. (To say nothing of the fact that these sellers take such lousy photos, for the most part, that one can't see any detail in them.) This hurts conscientious buyers and sellers alike, and has to be one of the craziest things eBay has done in a long time. Hard to choose one, since they've all been nuts, but this may top them all.

I am part of the 'test group'. I've
been selling on eBay since 2001 with 10,800 feedbacks. I am a top rated seller.  This new 'idea' is one of the worst eBay has come up with.  First all, it's confusing because they have item description with one tiny sentence, then another button that one has to click to see 'full description'.
Once a person gets the window with the full description, they have to
'x' out of it to get back to bid or see the photos again.  I've had buyers who don't even know there are arrows to see more photos...How many buyers won't realize they have to 'x' out?
It's more work for the buyer and my guess is at least 50% of the buyers don't read the descriptions
to begin with, which leaves sellers prone to more defects.   The only reason eBay might be doing this is to get more clicks on their web site so they get higher ratings.  This will bring them more advertisers.
THEN  you will see the first page
where our descriptions used to be,
filled with advertisements.
eBay execs are driven by greed and greed alone. They'll say it's business, but there is good business and bad business. This is bad business.

As a Seller, I might pay $1.50 to
add the following in the subtitle window:
NOTE:CLICK ON BLUE BUTTON TO SEE FULL ITEM DESCRIPTION.
I can't be sure the buyers will see that either, though.

I would like to see ebay require that the buyer read the item specifics AND the sellers description before the buy button becomes active.

The only thing sellers need protection from is ebay themselves.

What a blind, disconnected, despicable company.

"I put a lot of effort into my descriptions including measurements, a more detailed condition, and most importantly list out my terms such as returns, AS-IS statements and the like. "

god bless you. I don't not buy anything from anyone who refuses to disclose measurements, description, and condition. seeing pictures is not believing.

Help, what a disaster! First, I must apologize for my bad english. I come from Germany and have an eBay Store .... where I sell HTML templates for eBay. Yes damn that destructive idea behind it? Ebay thinks it looks eh no longer on the description .... because every visit by phone. But even there you could have always look at everything. Now there are like in the app a button .... complete product description.

A disaster. A Shame. Ebay was previously each seller the possibility of an individual item description. The auction visitors could look at everything completely. The seller had the opportunity a beautiful presentation.

Unfortunately, everything is now squeezed into a small window ..... the customer scrolls from top to bottom and can view large images only partially.

There are many turn away from eBay. Even private seller.
What still present on Ebay .... if there is no room for individuality is more?

Cruel ..... who is responsible?
Only deleting all about me .... sites
Then the new shop systems .... without design possibilities.
Now a platzlich limited presentation space ......

When it comes to end soon with eBay? So sad about this desaster
