eBay Forces Shoppers to Click to View Item Descriptions

By: Ina Steiner

When visitors click through to an eBay listing, they can see photos and structured data at the top, followed by the seller's description. eBay turned on a switch on Wednesday evening in which some visitors can no longer see the description unless they click a separate button.

According to one user, clicking the button brought up a popup box containing the description. The user then had to close the box before they could see other parts of the listing page.

A seller wrote on the eBay discussion boards that she was "heartbroken" at the way the listing page now looks for her. "I spend so much time writing descriptions and taking great pictures. Loading them to the web, writing the HTML. I'm kind of heartbroken that the listing page looks so bad now."

She continued, "I just listed 2 antiques for more than a hundred each - who the heck is going to continue buying that kind of piece when the listing page is so ugly and difficult to read?"

Another eBay user was not so polite, tweeting, "eBay now wants to hide item descriptions behind a mouse click. What the actual fuck?"

They continued to vent on Twitter, "Whoever proposed that idea, and those who saw its implemention on the site for testing, have clearly never used the site before," and added, "eBay is frustrating."

However, not all users are seeing the new feature, which appears to be a test eBay is running. We asked eBay spokesperson Ryan Moore tonight if that was the case.

Wow how terrible that you have to click another botton. Most of Ebay elite buyers only push the buy botton and then cry fowl. How funny.

It is not worthwhile spending extra money for HTML to make your eBay location stand out.

There is nothing criminal about this. If you sell on eBay you voluntarily relinquish your rights every time you acknowledge the User Agreement.

No one will ever go to prison. No laws were broken.

Complain more and pay your shepard every month. The smart people left eBay.

As a long time online reseller on Amazon, with over 89,000 lifetime 100% rated feeedbacks, we decided to give another chance to eBay to grow our business and expand to a different customer base.

This is such an absurd change.   The basic problem with eBay is they have nothing for buy it now items, that should be a single system such as the Amazon ASIN catalog method.  eBay is obviously trying to implement something similar called the epid.  It is their attempt of cataloging items of the same UPC much like Amazon does with their buybox - everything that's on the same UPC has to be Liste on the same ASIN - the condition type of the item is mandated, and that's what separates the sellers.

The beautiful attraction to eBay seems to be the ability to look for the right item, the ability of a commerce retailer to display their business in a professional way.   From templates, to information provided, descriptions, policies, it's all right there.   Tabbing systems, it's a beautiful platform to really show consumers what a company can offer.   We agree with many of the comments from sellers thst it looks like there's nothing listed from that seller.

After even more testing, we find that it's opening a new popup, it doesn't always display your template design properly, but what's astonishing mostly is that you actually need to click the x to close that popup box again to add the item to the cart to buy it.  When companies want people to purchase using buy it now or one click ordering, not only is eBay taking seller information and pertinent details away from a consumer to let them make an educated choice on whom to do business with, they are also in fact taking more of a customers time to complete a transaction.    It's just a simply absurd addition to make the customer have to increase actual steps to purchase an item and find out what that online retailer is all about.

Anyone can sell on price, but for those companies such as ours that have great prices, we are more interested in conveying the message that we have great customer support as well - and that we stand by each and every transaction we conduct.

We sincerely hope they see how detrimental this is for both the consumer and for the seller that makes their marketplace viable and they get rid of this atrocious feature quickly.

Just our thoughts.

Thanks for reading :)

Just when I think that they can sink no lower they do. And based on history they always will.

Ric says "Which incompetent idiot in San Jose thinks that hiding descriptions from buyers is a good idea? As eBay is laying off thousands - that fool should be at the top of the list of terminations".

I could not agree more.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone noticed if this change applies to the big box retailers as well, or do their descriptions still show?

Rexford, the listings that I see are substantially different from those of Toys r Us. I don't use eBay at all anymore, but I was curious as to what the listings looked like. Toys r Us's page looks very professional. The full description shows automatically and even suggestions for other purchases available through Toys r Us. The "other" seller's listings hardly show any information unless you click on something.

This explains my lack of sales. Along with all the other crap that is going on. I've had 2 sales so far this month, with no sales the last 10 days. (i sell clothes so i guess no sales are better than sold items without reading the description.)

I guess i'm finally done with ebay whether i want to be or not. Too bad the real job market is still pretty tough right now. lose-lose all around.

I guess I am not in the test group on my accounts.

Thought I found one but it was just a seller that actually had nothing in the item description section.

The eBay mobile app has been this way for some time yet I still have to search  for those drop boxes.  Not only is the Item Description something you have to ''open'' but Item Specifics is, too.

One new thing I noticed this week is when there are bids on a ''live'' listing, the search result item bids section now shows /number of bidders.  For example, if there were 3 bids but only two bidders it would show 3 / 2. You don't have to open the bids link to see how many people are actually bidding.

For eBay to attempt to satisfy, in their mind of course, the less than 30% of people who view my listings via a mobile device, they are willing to screw the 70+% of those who can accommodate an adequate description area on their devices.

WHAT IDIOTS!!

Leaves me speechless.

More of incompetent middle management programming staff has risen to the top of the flotation tank and has been manifested as a bubbling foam waiting to be skimmed off.

I guess the ultimate goal is, when someone tries to see your listing, they must first wade through a splash page of 'featured' listings that eBay thinks they would rather see.

I was wondering why I had buyers asking questions about measurements etc which are set forth in great detail in the description field. I can not think of any legitimate purpose for burying this information further. Already a bit hard to access on mobile.

Yup, I went to purchase a small item a few days ago and sure 'nuff, there was no description. The very FIRST thing that went thru my mind was the person didn't have a description. Then I saw the ''see full item description'' and clicked on it. Pretty lame idea.

Mobile sales are skyrocketing, yes? I always have to click to see an item description on my phone. Maybe they figure it won't hurt sales on the web page. But it's a disservice to the buyer and seller, and in no way enhances the buying experience. What concerns me is that even MORE GARBAGE will be planted on my listing. Has anyone noticed the recommendations from eBay stores at the end of each page of search results? It is the cheapest junk imaginable.
