eBay Suffers Extended Outage

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is suffering a major outage Saturday morning that is preventing buyers and sellers from bidding, making purchases, or completing other tasks on the site. Reports are still coming in to Down Detector, such as this one at 6:40 am: "Alot of functionality is not available. I have bids on many items; my bids don't show up. My purchase history is not there."

eBay posted a notice last evening (6:05 pm ET on Friday) to report that a problem with its checkout system had been investigated and resolved.

At 4:45 am ET this morning, it posted another notice:

"We are aware that some users are currently experiencing intermittent problems with using the website. Our teams are working to address these issues. Our highest priority is our members' trading success. We apologize for any inconvenience this interruption causes. We will share additional information with our community as it becomes available."

One reader sent an email to EcommerceBytes overnight: "I was trying to post some items on eBay this evening and after getting one up, the system went down at about 11:00pm (Pacific Time) and is still down at 01:14am.

A reader in the UK wrote at 5:40 am ET, "eBay has been down most of the morning."

Reports are also coming in to Ecommerce EKG, the first one came in at about 2 am ET.

Stay tuned, we'll keep you updated.

Update 8:23 am ET: eBay gives the all-clear in this Announcement Board post at 8:13 am ET:

November 14, 2015 | 05:13AM PST/PT
We have resolved a technical issue that was causing some customers to experience slowness or loading issues when accessing certain parts of the eBay site. This has been fully resolved and we apologize for any inconvenience that it may have caused.

However, it downplayed the severity of the issue "some users" - "slowness" - "certain parts of the eBay site."

eBay did not tell sellers how they could protect themselves and whether they could cancel auctions, which were unable to receive last-minute bids, without fear of defects and negative feedback ratings.

Update 9:00 pm: eBay posted announcements on its main Announcement Board about the outage. The first post at 1:48 pm told users the majority of technical issues had been resolved, and standard protections would apply.

In the second post at 4:20 pm, eBay explained the cause of the outage: "From 10:25 PM PT on Friday, November 13, to 6:49 AM PT on Saturday morning, November 14, eBay experienced a network connectivity issue in one of our data centers." And it outlined in detail what actions it would take in an effort to make things right for sellers who were impacted by the issue.

Seems that no one notices that ebay.co.uk and ebay.de are BOTH still suffering major site disruption for a 3rd consecutive day.
This most recent outage MAY have been resolved for the ebay.com site but in the UK and Germany it is STILL an ongoing issue.
Please Ina, if you have the ability to question, can you ask what is the specific technical problem that affects the UK & German sites ?
We are getting the poorest part of a shoddy service.

I don't follow the boards, so didn't know what was up yesterday when ALL of my images I tried to list brought up an Image Error message I'd not seen before (as for size). So it was hitting NY.

Monday morning (0900) in the UK and downdetector glowing volcano red on a 4th consecutive day in the UK and Europe as reports of site malfunction continue to roll-in.
Ina, ebay are being ''economical'' with the truth.
There IS a DEEP-SEATED technical problem with the site that ebay cannot or will not fix.

Perhaps if we invoke the name of :: CARL ICAHN :: the forces that be will swarm Ebay and purge the impure, anti commerce environment sellers are tortured by and revert back to Ebay's original, positive, commerce fostering atmosphere.

I've been blaming eBay for all of these problems but maybe I am pinning the blame on the wrong people.

Perhaps I should be blaming myself for ignoring all of these warning signs regarding the foolishness of putting eggs in the eBay basket.

Correct. eBay's "crack" tech staff can't be diverted to yet more "disruptive disruption" - making cosmetic changes to various of the site's pages at random. Every time you tweak something, you risk BREAKING something else.

Can we just retire the term "glitch"? Things in IT don't 'just happen'.  There are specific reasons.  Let's use those terms.  If the company won't be specific let's just start using Catastrophic Failure until they will release true statements.

eBay should have really thought twice about hiring the Healthcare.gov team to head eBay's IT.

First they released a new app that is abysmal and simply does not work, people can't buy or sell on it.  Now they can't keep the site up for more than a couple of days.

And blaming a datacenter again is almost childish.

The madness needs to stop. DAILY updates needs to stop.  Quarterly - maybe, but this ongoing experimental tinkering by newly hired nerds is absurd!  And BETA TESTING, so they know it actually works. Sheesh, it's become ridiculous on all sites any more, we ''hope'' they will work when we go there....

Each meltdown/outage seems to leave a new and more maddening collection of business ending “glitches” in its wake.

One example of the MANY that we have noticed today:  Markdown Manager, despite any periodic reports otherwise, is still EXTREMELY messed up with even some new (never before seen !!) problems today (but we are still too stunned at some of them to even waste time writing about them now).  By mid afternoon, some of the items that continued to be shown (the apparent usual MO for quite some time now) at reduced sale prices (a day or days after scheduled sales were to have ended) were finally back to regular price.

What a little miracle!!

Of course, it would have been a bigger miracle if any of our items (whether at the temporary reduced prices or at the regular prices) had been shown in search results (thus giving them a chance to be seen .... and perhaps to be sold).

But we, like thousands/millions of other ''small sellers'',  suffer the misfortune of not being a big retailer, a preferred Chinese junk dealer, or a special featured and promoted seller (who pays in cash or compliments).

We are all apparently supposed to feel very privileged.  We apparently pay very high fees merely for the right to say we sell on eBay....but since our unique items are rarely ''seen'' on eBay (thanks to Can't See Me), many of us are rarely able to sell anything on the ''global venue''.

But at least today, some of our items that were being ''held captive'' on sale in the Markdown Manager Maelstrom and in the  invisible world of search manipulation were (belatedly) permitted to return to their original prices.  We aren't sure if it was (1) thanks to “fixes” that we tried that had been suggested by others here on ECB, (2) due to the eBay programming gremlins temporarily &/or partially correcting some of the exasperating catastrophic programming failures &/or (3) if it was due to sheer luck.

We then tested the system by setting up a couple of sales today (which took a VERY long time because of so many bizarre system “malfunctions”), but those sales now seem to be permanently stuck in a “scheduled” status many hours after they were to have started.

WHAT A LOST CAUSE!

Maybe the most recent extended outage is ''officially'' over (supposedly in some locations), but most users (except the naive ones who truly don't have a clue) realize that the cataclysmic disaster continues --- and that the current  non-stop system failures are most likely permanent and terminal.

This was posted on Seeking Alpha:

Carl Icahn, who last year led a successful campaign to get EBAY to spin off PayPal (NASDAQ:PYPL), has disclosed through his firm's Q3 13F he no longer has a position in the former company.

Icahn did, however, have a 46.3M-share position in PayPal, good for a 3.8% stake. eBay concluded its tax-free spinoff of PayPal to shareholders in July.

@bitbybit (and @comet)

What you experienced during the outage was EXACTLY what we kept seeing (and continue to see).  The average/clueless shopper would not have even realized that the eBay master puppeteer was in total control of the extremely curated/manipulated shopping experience.

How convenient that certain functions (for ''the chosen'') work as planned while the ''outage''  causes the functions for the ''small sellers'' / ''the noise'' to crash and burn.  Is it known if shoppers patronizing the ''special'' sellers were able to complete purchases/transactions during the outage that aggravated so many small sellers?

Tuesday 17 November 0800hrs UK time and ebay is DOWN AGAIN for ebay.co.uk users.
Ina, perhaps you could ask the Vice President (Steve Boehm ?) to comment on the technical difficulties affecting the UK site specifically.
This is no longer a ''throttling''   situation, this is full-on suffocation.
Our businesses are dying over here, WHY ??

Had a very good weekend on Etsy and nothing on eBay.

This morning, Tuesday, I did receive an offer on an item.

A WARNING to all sellers!!!

While relisting items this morning, I noticed that the global shipping program box had a check mark in it.  There is NOT suppose to be a check mark.

When the items were originally listed, I deselected global shipping program.  And the program is supposed to stay deselected as usual when relisted.

But some smart poop at eBay decided that they knew better.

Careful when you relist....
