Wondering What eBay Dear John Letter Looks Like?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay sends goodbye letters to sellers it deems unworthy of selling on its marketplace. With its new Seller Performance Standards going into effect with the August 20th evaluation period, it looks like more sellers are getting these "Dear John" letters thanks in part to its new defect policy.

One recipient sent us the letter she received along with a note:

"eBay just restricted me from selling since I am now below standard under their "NEW AND IMPROVED RATING SYSTEM".

I have always been above standard prior to August 20.My heart is not broken. I have sold little on eBay since the first hack of the year. Am already in the process of moving my inventory anyway. All I will be minus is the bills.

How do they have the audacity to grade anyone, when they are offering such a poor seller and buyer experience. The site is down more than it is up. Of course, I am sure that is beyond their control. It is because of hackers having full access of their site.

Good riddance to eBay. I will not be giving them a second thought, but will do everything in my power to spread the good word. Here is a copy of the letter they sent."

Hi XXXXX,
We want to let you know that you haven't met the minimum requirements to sell on eBay and your seller level is Below Standard in the Global, US program. As such, you won't be able to list and sell items on eBay anymore.

Selling standards are in place to ensure that sellers deliver a great customer experience to their buyers. They measure whether buyers were satisfied with your items and your customer service.

When you don't meet the minimum requirements for selling, you are creating experiences that erode confidence and drive buyers away.

If you had any active listings, they've now been ended, and any selling fees paid for those items will be credited to you.

If you've recently sold items that you still need to fulfill or ship, do so promptly. You'll still be able to see any recently sold items in My eBay, send and receive messages, and of course, buy items on eBay.

To see more details on why your seller level is Below Standard, go to your Seller Dashboard.

The fallout continues from eBay's new Defect Rate policy.

They have chased their once loyal best customers to other venues, and are enabling new business ventures like Apple Pay, that will finish them off

ebay / paypal will only be left with dollar store crap from china,

ebay / payapl will go down in history as one of the biggest business failures ever.

They never realized that their best asset, in fact their ONLY asset, was their sellers.

So UNUSUAL that was, if fact it had never happened before, thousands, hundreds of thousands of regular folks committed to this company, as a LIFE-CHOICE. In the early days we were doing it for fun and we were PLASTERED WITH long-term promises from Meg and we bit the hook- medical insurance- they were going to do EVERYTHING for us and we bit the hook and made the commitment, like others here.

This SACRIFICE and TRUST from hundreds of thousands of sellers CREATED what was the success of ebay.

That is why this is SO personal to us and that is why the "NOISE" is different this time. IT IS WARRANTED and well-deserved.

If it had not been for that ILLEGAL STOCK-MANIPULATING RUMOR by Andreeson last week we would be at $42-44 by now.
(Lies and false rumors work).

"The Information"- GEEZE.

Bitcoin acceptance- big surprise...

Andreeson gets richer.

Regulators Sleep zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

I am not taken in by this former seller's rant.  To have low DSRs, slow delivery, returns, and cancelled transactions in high enough quantity to receive this letter, there was clearly something very wrong with the way the seller did business.

Yes, there are virtually no sellers who embrace the seller performance standards as they currently operate, but this seller can't possibly be blameless - nor did he/she have this happen without warning.

The statement ''How do they have the audacity to grade anyone, when they are offering such a poor seller and buyer experience. The site is down more than it is up. Of course, I am sure that is beyond their control. It is because of hackers having full access of their site.'' is clearly nonsense.

Instead of using this letter as just another soapbox to launch yet another anti-ebay rant, sellers should celebrate waving goodbye to a seller who clearly was giving other sellers a bad name with his/her selling practices.

NONE OF US KNOW THE FACTS BEHIND WHY THIS SELLER WAS OUSTED but all of us should THINK about how bad your record would have to be to end up in the same spot.

No, I'm not an ebay employee and I haven't drunk the koolaid.  I've sold on ebay since 1997 and have been a power seller and TRS since both programs began but am constantly in jeopardy of losing my TRS status because of lack of/tardy USPS scans.  I don't like the new performance standards, but I do like having a place to sell online that has substantial traffic.

So what you are saying is that there was something clearly wrong with the way Laurengrace conducted business as well? Apparently you overlooked that posting on this thread. Careful, careful... certainly Ebay in their infinite wisdom will find reason to add you to their 'Dear John' seller list.  Substantial traffic? Now that's funny!

DISGRACEFUL! Though I've maintained TRS, I haven't listed for a month, knowing how unpredictable ebay in all it's glory is. Haven't sold a thing on the other sites, and was thinking about listing again...i just can't. It's like a slap in the face to the whole ebay community.

I know too many good sellers, personally, who have been impacted. And I know, through personal contact, that there are way more that were at the front of the line, that should have been gone a looooong time ago! Counterfeit items, stolen items (yes there was a police report)and NEGS that rival Toy R Us.

@ ANYONE: When did the first Dear Johns go out...how long will they keep sending them out????????????

I assume if it's an ongoing process, everyone here could be next...even the one who swears ''the seller must have done something''!

I don't get WHY they haven't taken a big hit on the amount of listings they have...the total number goes down, but always comes back up:

A friend who is still listing (''ignoring all the B.S'') reports sales have never been better.

Nothing would make me happier to see the total amount of sales in $$ DOLLAR AMOUNT$$$ DROP..and drop some more...and keep DROPPING...until they DROP DEAD!

@carol

You won't lose your TRS status due to late USPS scans.  However you can lose your TRS discount on those specific transaction.  Unless your scans are pushing you below 90%, then you could lose TRS status.

If you are looking at the percentage you see when you first go into your dashboard, you are looking at the wrong number.  That percentage [1st seen when going into your dashboard] is for the current month we are in and the number will fluctuate as you get sales it will drop as things get shipped and verified it will go up.  But that isn't a number you are eval'd on until September 20th.  Plenty of time for scans to get verified.

DiscosDeVinilo - bummer what happened to you. Can you perhaps contact the buyer and have her call ebay? don't laugh - I did exactly that after ebay declined help. I enlisted the help of the happy buyer - she called and asked ebay to reconsider. Since ebay LOVES those buyers so much they recanted. It's always worth a try. Hope that was a lesson learned about speaking to buyer outside of eBay's realm. Never do it.

Maybe you should have read my other post where i displayed my feedback and 4.8 detailed seller ratings across the board for all to see before you decided it was my own fault, and when they do restrict you, you can believe they are not going to send you a letter saying so. As a matter of fact, we were supposed to have a GRACE PERIOD before any such restrictions took place. Another seller with a 99.7 rating and top rated seller was restricted yesterday, also posted in this blog. In the future, you may want to do your homework before being so judgemental. Keep drinking the Kool Aid.

According to wacko ebay we are still a TRS, but we are STILL leaving for other venues, the environment is so rancid for our business, we would have to be out of our minds if we did not start moving away.

What your seeing is exactly just like when a leader of a country that has gone insane, with no one to stop the madness, they will stop at nothing short of full destruction, the past has shown us this exact situation, many times over, think about it.

Not sure anything can be done at this point to reverse it, but we have no choice but to evacuate, to protect our interests.

I wonder how many new, very dedicated professional scammers ebay is creating by sending out such demeaning and insulting letters to their former customers?

Maybe ebay is setting up so china will buy ebay??

donahoe doesn't have the brains to figure out that sellers are buyers. Does he really expect someone getting kicked off to continue buying?  I think they will buy everything from someplace else and do nothing but bad mouth ebay.

As someone previously mentioned, the number of people bringing in packages to the post office that are ebay sellers have dropped off drastically. I asked the postal clerk I know and she said the regulars are way down.

Having a warehouse for chinese crap in California is just plain wrong and very deceptive to advertise USA.

ebay does not care if their actions are fair, accurate or based on their own incompetency. They just do what they want when they want and for their own agendas.

Once they have kicked off all of their low and mid level sellers and are left with no one else to blame, and their diamond sellers are still proving to be just as "untrustworthy" as all of those they kicked off, ebay will still find a way to blame everyone and everything else but themselves.

ebay still survives through their full and complete HYPOCRISY!  Their motto is, "do as we say, not as we do".

I have chosen to not shop at ebay not because I do not like or trust the sellers but because I HATE ebay the company. THEY are the reason I do not shop there.

ebay CAN be SHUT DOWN but it would take courage and strength of both sellers and buyers.

I am not sure of you all heard about the Demoulas Market Basket grocery store chain in New England that was SHUT DOWN for 6 weeks by the employees and customers. If you have not it is an incredible story. The chains annual revenue is like $4.6 Billion dollars. What they did went national and international. They literally made history and stumped every business professor, annalist etc.

The workers risked their jobs, careers etc to stand up for what was right  and to protect their jobs and for the customers who were going to get totally screwed by much higher prices and much poorer service.

There is a lot to this story so I will not go through it all and I am sure many of you will think that it is only a grocery store job but this store is much different. The average tenure for employees at this grocery chain is 27 years. With many being well over that to 40-50 years.  No other grocery store chain has that in the country. Even long term cashiers make 40K a year and managers average over 100K a year and the average retirement package is approx 1 million. They not only have some of the best medical benefits in the industry and beyond but they get 2-3 bonuses a year worth thousands to $40-50K a year, but on top of all of that they get profit sharing anywhere from 15-25% of their salaries in which they do not contribute 1 penny, the companies puts every penny on it.  It is not a 401K it is an actual share of the company's profits.

Yet they all including managers to baggers put it all on the line to stand up against corporate GREED and bring back their CEO who they ALL loved and admired, and to protect what he stood for.

But what makes this story even more historical and overwhelming is what the CUSTOMERS did to support them. They literally BOYCOTTED all 71 stores in support of the workers and CEO.

The customers literally went to the competitors and paid more money each week to support the boycott. They then posted their receipts to the windows and doors of Market basket to show their support. Demoulas Market Basket is known for having the lowest prices and had been putting many of their competitors out of business because of their prices even though they also pay their employees the more than anyone in the industry. Which of course baffeld the professors and annalists.

A little back story; The chain is a privately held company, it has been in business something like 100 years (started by the grandparents of the current relatives). The two cousins have had a several decades battle over it. One cousin Arthur S. who had not actually worked for the company for at least 25 years and only collected his money from the profits for all that time, hated his cousin Arthur T (both names after the grandfather) who actually worked for the company with his father (until his death) and made the company what it is today has been CEO for 5 years and brought it from making around 2.5 billion a year to over 4.6 Billion in just 5 years.

Arthur S wanted control of the company so that he could sell it off for billions and seek revenge on his cousin Arthur T. However, he had the least amount of shares and needed the support of other family memebers in order to do that, which he finally got last year.  He tried to fire Arthur S then but because Arthur T was so beloved by workers and customers alike, they staged a huge rally and got them to back off at lest for about a year. Then this past June without notice they fired him. They brought in corporate raiders to help dismantle and sell off the company. Court documents proved this and their other schemes which was to raises prices and start cutting out profits sharing, bonuses. cutting benefits etc.

So the workers said NO WAY and the customers also knew that they were goign to have to start pqying higher prices,so they ALL banned together to say HELL NO!  They also knew that they only one who cared about them and took care of the workers and customers was Arthur T, the former CEO.  So they DEMANDED his return with FULL authority. The evil cousin and his family members only cared abut selling the company and making as much money as they could refused.  So the workers (managers included) and customers stood by their demands and brought the company to it's knees. All of the delivery drivers, just about all of the office workers all refused to work cutting off the food supplies.  The rest of the 25K workers started protesting in front of the stores and the customers boycotted. Well over 2 million shoppers STOPPED shopping.

The 71 stores went from making over 10 million a day to making less than a million a day. It also needs to be said that Arthur T and his side of the family offered to buy out the other side of the family.  But Arthur S did not want to sell to him because he hates him so they were trying to sell to anyone else. The competitors desperately wanted to buy it. But the customers were much smarter and knew they just wanted to buy it to force them to pay more at their stores so they threatened to boycott them as well.

Arthur S and his greedy team tried many things to try and force the workers to come back to work and the rest of them to stop protesting.  Firings, job fairs you anme it but nothing worked. But it gets even better!

The new board and ceos kept blaming all of the problems on the workers so the customers did a fund raiser to place a full page add in the paper to tell the board and Ceos that THEY were to blame. They planned to raise like 3K they ended raising over 20K within like 3 days.

So to the great news of this story. It lasted about 6 weeks but the workers and customers WON! The Board and new Ceos really had no choice but the sell their shares to Arthur T. He is now back, the workers all came back and so did all of the customer and even others which never shopped there before.

So the point of this story, which I highly recommend people read it to get the full jest of it and how much POWER sellers and customer have,is that when people STAND UP and say ENOUGH is ENOUGH and are truly willing to sacrifice for what they believe in, they CAN WIN!

The Market Basket VICTORY was only accomplished because the workers literally put their jobs on the line and customers literally sacrificed by PAYING higher prices by shopping elsewhere. In fact even the customers where on the streets protesting.

They ALL knew that if they stood by and did nothing, they would ALL lose in the end because the New board and Ceos fully intended to sell of the company, but before they did that they already planned to cut profit sharing, benefits, bonuses and eventually salaries for the workers but immediately raise the prices hurting all of the shoppers. This was all designed to make higher profits for themselves immediately and to make it look much more appealing to potential buyers and sell it for even more.

I am sure there will be many here who will look at this as just "business" and say they have every right to do this, and technically that is true, but this is about much more than that. This thinking has NO moral value and is what has hurt this country and why companies like ebay do what they do with out a second thought to all of the people and families they HURT for their own GREED, which are also the ones who MADE THEM!

The Marker Basket workers and customers sent them a CLEAR message, "WE MADE YOU AND WE CAN BREAK YOU!"

How WONDERFUL would it be for EVERYONE to stand up to ebay and show them the SAME MESSAGE!

For those who would like to read more about this story just type in Demoulas market basket boycott or protests. It really is inspiring and historical. BTW, they are not unionized which makes it even more inspiring.

It has been said that it has left Ceos across the country worried it can happen to them, and it SHOULD!

Scary letter. Donahue came from Bain-the same company Romney chaired?  If that's so--of course it's going this way-he cut his teeth with a company that did nothing but destroy.
There are a lot of small sellers on ebay--someone mentally unstable is going to get that letter - figure they have nothing to lose--and take a shot at Donahue.

what a wonderful positive story!  It would be inspirational if sellers and buyers alike would schedule, let's say a 3-day a protest at Ebay headquarters. EBay's 'positive b.s. spin' would come to a grinding halt. The smoke would begin to clear. Media attention worthy of shaking up Wall Street.
