Wondering What eBay Dear John Letter Looks Like?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay sends goodbye letters to sellers it deems unworthy of selling on its marketplace. With its new Seller Performance Standards going into effect with the August 20th evaluation period, it looks like more sellers are getting these "Dear John" letters thanks in part to its new defect policy.

One recipient sent us the letter she received along with a note:

"eBay just restricted me from selling since I am now below standard under their "NEW AND IMPROVED RATING SYSTEM".

I have always been above standard prior to August 20.My heart is not broken. I have sold little on eBay since the first hack of the year. Am already in the process of moving my inventory anyway. All I will be minus is the bills.

How do they have the audacity to grade anyone, when they are offering such a poor seller and buyer experience. The site is down more than it is up. Of course, I am sure that is beyond their control. It is because of hackers having full access of their site.

Good riddance to eBay. I will not be giving them a second thought, but will do everything in my power to spread the good word. Here is a copy of the letter they sent."

Hi XXXXX,
We want to let you know that you haven't met the minimum requirements to sell on eBay and your seller level is Below Standard in the Global, US program. As such, you won't be able to list and sell items on eBay anymore.

Selling standards are in place to ensure that sellers deliver a great customer experience to their buyers. They measure whether buyers were satisfied with your items and your customer service.

When you don't meet the minimum requirements for selling, you are creating experiences that erode confidence and drive buyers away.

If you had any active listings, they've now been ended, and any selling fees paid for those items will be credited to you.

If you've recently sold items that you still need to fulfill or ship, do so promptly. You'll still be able to see any recently sold items in My eBay, send and receive messages, and of course, buy items on eBay.

To see more details on why your seller level is Below Standard, go to your Seller Dashboard.

The fallout continues from eBay's new Defect Rate policy.

Lots and lots of chinese manufactures are offered on eBay. Now eBay is going to HELP the Chinese camoflauge the country of origin by warehousing the items in the US. I have gotten so much JUNK from China--and I don't mean boats--that I now TRY to avoid buying China-made everywhere. If eBay wants to get rid of junk, they're dumping the wrong sellers.

@jack

If you prefer to advise them to give up, that is your advice. I just don't share that point of view.  And for the record I never said they are "gleefully happy to help".

@discos

Here is more info on what Ebay announced.

http://www.ecommercebytes.com/C/blog/blog.pl?/pl/2014/4/
1398474555.html

Here
is an excerpt from that article.  Pay close attention to the last 3 words.

You'll be protected through the March 20, 2015 seller evaluation from selling limits or restrictions as a consequence of falling below eBay's minimum standards strictly because of one or more of the defects that were not previously counted in standards that you received prior to March 11, 2014: opened cases, detailed seller ratings of 3 for item description, returns because the item was not as described, negative or neutral feedback, or seller-cancelled transactions*.

So in your case, while completely annoying and frustrating.  If you want / need your account back, you will have to keep calling.  I would bring to their attention this Ebay announcement.  When you call ask for a supervisor.  I know how tough it is to try and get things across to a CSR, but unfortunately it is all we have.

Thank you for your concern. However, if you read the letter i sent, i was in the process of dumping eBay before they dumped me. I was already moving my items 2 other sites. I dont want to go back. I don't appreciate the way i am treated there anymore. They are rude and disrespectful. I have never dealt with any other business that has tried to make me feel as unwanted as they have. They have never treated me as a valued customer, which is what i have been. I have spent many thousands of dollars on their fees and also as a buyer. I have sold 8 items in 9 days. Sales are really in the toilet. I do not want to sell there anymore. I will not miss the mistreatment ,bullying and no sales for one second. I was going in the hole every month since May paying fees. So Hasta la Vista eBay.

After almost 9 years of successful selling on ebay, we are now preparing for the inevitable "Dear John" letter. We started to shift our platform base about 6 months ago, now have 90% of our sales away from ebay. In essence, we gave ebay the "Dear John Letter' six months ago.

We averaged $15k in sales per month (3 years), the last 6 months was $4k per month. The proverbial writing was on the wall.

No company will ever be successful if they destroy their sales producing partners...

We are usually positive people when it comes to a lot of things, but it's been a challenge to find anything positive in ebay these days.

To just name 3, look at eforcity, buy and toysrus feedback. John Donahoe & Co. wants all to believe these moves of seller extinction are about ''Customer Experience''. Given our best efforts ( the bulk of sellers being sent ''Dear John'' ) we couldn't possibly sour as many buyers in a year in 98-99 percent of all instances as just these 3 do in a single day.

Back to toysrus, a Bain held Co. There is an interesting article about toysrus that clearly demonstrates how Bain Captital works, I believe once it is read by all, more will have a better understanding as to what is going on at John Donahoe & Co. ( formerly ebay )

@AgendaSwallowsAll,

Love the Bain/Toys-R-Us story; apparently Bain is applying their Workbook to TRU the same way that Johnny Ho is to eBay; there must be a plan in there somewhere ...

The eBay executive suite—where the incompetent mingle with the disingenuous, the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid ... http://bit.ly/11F2eas

@AgendaSwallowsAll - What really makes me laugh regarding Toys R Us is they have over 1,000 negatives and 800 neutrals over the last year but have DSRs of 4.9 across the board. Are you kidding me? People are leaving negatives but giving TRU perfects DSRs? JD must think we are incredibly stupid.

Like The End suggests, if you sell vintage or antiques (we sell antique and mid-century furniture) get ye to Etsy. We have sold on Ebay since 1999. We have a 0% defect rate but, quite frankly, we could care less if Ebay's lights went permanently out. Life is that good on Etsy!

If you had told us just 12 months ago that we would be doing 85% of our sales on Etsy and the balance on Ebay, U would have said No Way but, sure enough, that is what has happened.

Every Cha-Ching on the cell phone now is an Etsy sale as opposed to what used to be Ebay bids. Plus we make a LOT more per sale with Etsy's 3.5% charge vs. Ebay's 9% Add to that the fact that Etsy only charges an FVF on the item, not shipping (which for us is Huge!) and we too are completely ambivalent about Ebay going forward.

Ebay will get what they deserve eventually for their crappy treatment of small sellers and it won't be pretty!

To me one of the most salient points that should be made to the media is that Donahoe is doing to emerging small online businesses what WalMart did to Main Street and is using every illegal, underhanded, unethical tactic he can think of to accomplish this goal.

Donahoe (and we can include Amazon in this as well but that's another discussion) and his big business friends have CONSPIRED to make sure these corporations will have little or no competition on ebay.

Big Boxes have largely driven out small brick and mortar competition, and Donahoe will make sure that start ups/small businesses trying to sell on ebay are destroyed by negotiating special deals for his special Diamond sellers and their suppliers, the Communist Chinese.

Donahoe and Devin Wenig hate America and  love China. They hate American small businesses selling on ebay and love Communist Chinese small business selling on ebay. They do whatever is necessary to protect Chinese interests while exterminating American competition.

What have they done to encourage American manufacturing? Nothing. In fact, they're tryin by throwing as much business and advantages as they can to the Communist Chinese.

Devil Wenig is busy collecting searches so he can "signal" the Communist Chinese to manufacture these items including knockoffs and maybe worse. (see Ina's recent article highlighting wenig's comment in the August issue of "Atlantic" Magazine, and go read the actual article. It will further turn your stomach.

Ebay is no longer an American corporation. They offshore earnings to evade American taxes. They cook their books to deceive American investors.

No, under Donahoe's reign of terror ebay has become a corporation run to serve the best interests of the Communist Chinese and the large corporations who get their merchandise from Communist China.

On the eve of September 11, I submit that John Donahoe, Devin Wenig, Brian Burke, and the remainder of the sociopathic ebay management parasites are anti American economic terrorists whose goal is destroy small as many small businesses as they possibly can to eliminate competition for the Big Boxes.

They are filthy, well compensated tools of even larger interests like transglobal corporations and the Communist Chinese.

One of Ming's ebay laws is has been for Years that it's ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY. ALWAYS.

Donahoe and Wenig prefer renminbis and yuans to dollars and cents.

These are truly despicably evil men who belong in federal prison for their crimes -- conspiring to restrain trade, deceptive business practices, etc.

Are you sure that was the link you intended on posting.  I don't see anything in there are a TRS that is restricted.  Of course I could have overlooked something and I apologize if I did.  Can you direct me to the posting that was about a current TRS seller that is also restricted please.

Just a guess. I'd suggest it may be due to this seller having Sotheby's & Christie's Auctions in so many of their listing titles given recent partnerships entered in to with John Donahoe & Co. by both Auction Houses.

This seller is not suspended. They knocked their listings down to 340 from over 1000 because of 2 unresolved global shipping cases from December 2013 according to the post.

What unmitigated gall!:  ''and of course, buy items on eBay.''

I guess I am too dumb to get the logic.  Ebay is giving free listings left and right.  I am assuming that is to get their count up.  But then are dumping sellers left and right.

Since the Golden Children are likely getting free listings already (IMO), who is going to be left to pay the bills when they get rid of the smaller sellers?

I apologize.  I don't know what happened when I tried it the first time, but I didn't go where you described.  However I just tried it again and I got there.

That is a new one on me too.  I've never heard of problems from the Global sites affecting the US site.  That is pretty scary stuff.
