Some Sellers Confused by New PayPal Design

By: Ina Steiner

Reports are coming in about PayPal's new design. "Does anyone else have a problem with PayPal's new format," asked one reader. "Now, I can only see the fees they charge at the end of the month in the monthly report or item by item."

It's important for her to know the actual fees for each transaction since she sells on consignment. She did write back after spending a lot of time searching and found a report under "Activity Report, Basic Report." However, she wrote, "it is a hidden feature and I think it should be front and center."

Another seller wrote to say "the new design is horrible." Some of her challenges:

- Not showing existing balance in wallet, "so you can not transfer your funds, and your money is stuck in PayPal," she wrote.

- "Not showing your total amount of money for each month in your financials."

- "Confusing issues on how to send and request money - lumping sending and requesting money in one link." This can get you into trouble, she said, if you accidentally send money instead of requesting it from the seller.

This seller also wrote back, forwarding me an email from PayPal where it acknowledged the first issue, writing, "We do apologize if there's system issue for transferring funds to your bank account. We are aware about this issue and we're still working on it, we appreciate your patience."

Sellers discussing the changes on the eBay boards said they disliked the changes and many of them were trying to revert to the "classic" view, though one said the reports in the classic view are not set up as they had been.

Above: Screenshot of new PayPal design on top, old design on the bottom.

A search of Twitter found many people (not necessarily sellers) liking the new design, though it's unclear if it's simply the home page redesign PayPal previously rolled out, or whether they are seeing the new changes to the inside pages.

PayPal is still rolling out the new design - if you've experienced it, let us know what you think about the new ways of accomplishing your selling-related business tasks, and if you have any tips to share with other sellers. (Please be specific about what you like and don't like.)

Absolutely UGLY. I keep telling them that if they want to be a bank, they should look like a bank and not a site that caters to kindergartners. I too, have been with PP since the beginning and always liked its streamlined design (just like a bank.) I'm sure with all the new sellers on eBay that was pushed for last spring with free stores and such, these are sellers who should not be selling anywhere because they have never bothered to read the rules. I call this eBays ''trickle down effect'' and it has finally gotten to PayPal.

I haven't seen the new design yet, but am puzzled why someone would take all month before checking to see the PP fee per transaction. I never ship a thing out until I am positive PP has the money and I want to copy/paste the address into endicia. Since I am there already, why not check what the fee is and also put in the tracking number.

Perhaps all that isn't easy with the new system (like I said I haven't seen it yet). Up to now, I've always thought PP was very easy to navigate and use.

Wow!  Great posts.  I'm 100% in agreement with everyone.  You've all saved me alot of
writing .... so, I'll just add this:

-  Don't like that I can't see the ''gross'' and  ''fees'' columns anymore without extra searching.

-  Don't like the light blue lettering.  Less contrast/harder to read.

-  Don't like the multiple-lines-per transaction format.  Takes up more vertical screen space.
Requires more frequent scrolling.  (20 items used to fit on a screen .... now it's 10.)

-  Don't like that I can no longer ''archive'' my old transactions that I'm done with. I want them off the screen when I'm done with them.  Yet they remain, always.
There used to be an ''archive button''.  Now, they changed it to ''Move to recent activity''.  The items you're looking at ARE the ''recent activity'' ... there is no longer an archive.
So, why is there a ''Move to recent activity'' button to move something to where it (now) already is(?)
Mousing over the ''move to recent activity'' button to get more info,  you get this message:
''transactions you unarchive will be moved to your recent activity list'' .... (ummm .... if I can no longer ''archive'' transactions, because you took away the
''archive'' button, then what's there to ''unarchive'' anymore?

After I finish these comments,  I'm going into a private room, door closed, to scream very loudly.  I need to do that now.

I have 5 online stores. All 5 used to accept Paypal.

I have been with Paypal since the very, very beginning and have never had any problem with them.

But today, I removed Paypal as a payment option on all of my stores. My eCrater stores now only accept Stripe and my Etsy stores only accept Etsy's Direct Payment.

That's how much I like the new Paypal interface.

I was surprised to have to read thru so many comments before I found my biggest complaint with the disrupted design, not being able to archive transactions that I'm done with!

Regarding the cell phone comment, that MIGHT be what they're trying to do. I sell on Etsy and they say that more than 40% of their traffic is from mobile devices.

It seems like every website is moving away from grid format to hugely white space with little islands of information. Everything is so far apart its hard to read.

I want DARK websites, they are so much easier on the eyes, something like bitcoin wisdom https://bitcoinwisdom.com/markets/btce/btcusd

Tightly spaced, high contrast, everything there, easy on the eyes.

Paypal sprung the 'new design' on me about 3 months ago and I immediately opted out. I dread the day they they start 'forcing' me to use it.

How do you ''OPT OUT'' - I didn't think they were supplying any way to do that. But if there is, would you please tell us !??

My suspicion as a couple of others have, is that this is catering to mobile devices which apparently have to have bright white background with as few as possible tables and grids and boxes.

IT IS AWFUL. I'll use a word that dates me - HORRID.

But thinking about it, isn't every company beginning to cater to the kids (grownups?) who can't wean themselves off their Xboxes and Playstations ??

Dumbing down America.

I don't like the new design. I spent almost a half-hour trying to find the pre-approved payments area, which was previously very easy to find, in order to cancel an online video subscription I had enabled via PayPal. I, too, filled out PayPal's survey and told them I didn't like it. I told them I will think twice about subscribing or buying products from stand-alone websites, like Funimation, which use only PayPal as a payment source. Among my comments were, ''I hope my bank doesn't switch to a similar design or I'll probably quit doing my banking online as well.'' I wonder if this new design will create issues with non-profit websites that use PayPal to accept donations?

Up to this time, I hadn't had any major problems with PayPal and was pretty satisfied with using it for my small business transactions. But this new design really stinks, a real headache using it to track payments and fees for bookkeeping. I'm in the process of gradually switching my business over to my own website and I'm definitely going to give Google Check Out and Checkout by Amazon a second look.

Just checked my Paypal account, and I see no change.  I checked, and I do have a business account which means...Paypal takes out more fees????

Remember in the early years and an account holder would receive 5 bucks if you referred a new customer to them?

Remember in the early years there were no fees?

Remember in the early years Paypal froze both buyers and sellers acounts/money on a whim?  Screw you and screw everybody, we are Paypal and we will give you access to YOUR money when we are good and ready - idiots!  Paypal did that to me in the middle of a buying trip in Asia.  Nice guys.

I believe it was the loss of 50 million or more in a lawsuit that Paypal quit doing the instant freeze thing.

Even today, as I daily reconcile my Paypal account (I do not trust them, at all).   That even a CPA (me) finds the ins and outs of transactions, that Paypal deliberately “muddies the waters” of our accounts to keep account holders in the dark.

In some 14 years on eBay, I have seen significant changes to eBay’s format, and I still cannot see any improvements that help my business.

Now that our favorite CEO is running both eBay and Paypal, why not screw up Paypal as well?

I'm sure they would argue they do these types of changes to give the site a fresh new look as well as enhancing customer experience.

Well I'm not in any way pleased with these changes.  Cosmetically or in functionality.  Why take away information and make us do the math?  That simple thing makes no sense to me at all.

You log into your account and you see the net value of payments received.  Actual amt received less fees.  Now why in the world would they make such a change?  It makes no sense at all.

Now when I come it to verify that all my email notifications are correct / valid, I have to compare the name, the value and add back the fees to make sure it matches.  Or I have to click into each transaction and then compare it to the email received notifying me of the payment.

Since their update I have had trouble with shipping labels.  Most times I can't get them to print.  They just come up blank.  They do take my money for the postage, but I can't get the label to print.  So I then have to void the label and then wait about 30 days to get refunded on it.

I can still print shipping labels if it do it directly from an Ebay transaction detail.

Requesting money is a bit different too.  The email I got in after I created an invoice said I sent a GROUP money request.  Which I didn't.  And it lost all my recent details for invoices, which it use to display easily so if you wanted to copy one it was a breeze.

Not so much a breeze on the site anymore.  So many things just create more work for the user.  I will never understand why they think hiding information is a good thing.  PP has certainly been infected by the Ebay management style.

If they would just get an accountant with real world experience heading the team that is making changes, I'm confident they would have much better results.

Since it's our money we need to see fees/charges clearly & exactly how much is available for transfer. Why make things more obscure? Most are going the other way! Why fix the non-broken pieces? Other countries are not doing this because they have stricter laws. Paypal is not a bank either here but perhaps in other countries "if it looks like a duck..." Bottom line if you have others' money do not obscure data.

I do not like the video either. I think everybody knows about Paypal even folksy guitar players. I guess they are trying to appeal to artisans but I do not think they are in the dark about PP. Most people do not use it as a personal choice, i.e. because they do not like to give out email & get more stuff in inbox also they don't like the idea of Paypal storing credit cards and bank account info. They tell me with cards they get updates on how close they are to max by phone email text or even fax, their choice. I get that we are emailed to death with ads once we provide it & it's sold to "partners' Everybody should have choices & some have great protection with their cards, it varies by card type. You may have an AMEX but not all AMEX protection plans are the same. Plus if you use BML or Smart Connect there is less detail on the statement same with paypal as a buyer, you just see ebay joesmith on there. In a few months it is meaningless. For taxes, you have to print them out & write on them BML ebay purchase is not very detailed.I use Paypal because I have funds in account (at times)!

I don't care about the design. I care about functionality
And that's not happening anymore.
Can't FIND anything!!
Design your invoice: NOTHING works! The same page comes up - there is no way to customize my invoice.
2) WHERE the heck can I open my 'saved buttons' (Add to Cart).
By chance I found it once - not anymore, even after I put the page on my desktop.
It's not opening again.

The new design totally lacks 'working logic'.
Grrrrrrrr Can anyone tell me how to go back to the old design?

Click "Track Shipment" and you are taken to the USPS track shipment page, but without the tracking number, so no information is there.
Completely useless.

What you guys complaining about?
It looks soooo pretty!

Actually make sure you scroll to the bottom of the screen and on the left click on "CLASSIC VIEW!" This should send a signal, though neither eBay or PayPal (one in the same) really cares about anything you "Unimportant" Sellers complain about!

You got to remember, when the screen layout with created it was geared towards people that used that information, namely the SELLERS! But now that focus has been changed toward the Buyer!

So pretty is better! So I can see all the kids

Has any one else been trying to print and access any INTERNATIONAL LABELS using PP?  And been told that they are NO LONGER ALLOWING THE USE OF FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL?

And had the CSR tell you that the USPS no longer ALLOWS them to use this service and has DENIED them access?

When the CSR was ASKED point blank if this was BECAUSE of The Ho At The Helm---she LAUGHED.

Pretty funny eh????

Takes a small package from a few bucks to $33---sure our customers are gonna be reeeeaaaallll happy to hear THAT.

Hate the new design; it doesn't show all the information it did before, and it is a very unprofessional looking site now.  shame on you, PayPal.

As anyone who reads my occasional comments to stories on here, I'm not one of the clapping seals who blasts eBay/Paypal for anything they do.  Rather, I take a more balanced approach toward things.  That being said, I dislike these changes.  I go to Paypal and print out the sheets for orders, and write down my sales numbers and fees.  So if you spend $10 and my fees are 55 cents, I write those down.  In the old days, the next time I logged in, I look for the $10 sale and then know it was the last one printed and go up the list from there (yes, I'm one of the few people making multiple sales in a day).  Now, I have to do math every time I log in, which though not difficult, is a pain in the keister.  I wish they would simply bring it back to the old style as that suited my needs better.

To avoid the useless splash page on the main page when you want to log in, log in with the wrong password. Then bookmark the page that comes up telling you you've entered the wrong information and use that to log in.

When you do this, you'll get a simple text page that says you've asked for a page that is no longer available after logging in. Just click on overview and you're in.
