eBay Makes Major Change to Seller Feedback

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is making a major change to seller feedback as part of its Spring Seller Update 2014. eBay will eliminate two Detailed Seller Rating criteria in what will be a welcome part of the changes.

eBay will replace the four individual Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs) as the main way eBay evaluates seller performance with a new single measure called the "transaction defect rate." Item as Described and Shipping Time will remain. The factors that make up a seller's defect rate include the following:

- Detailed seller rating of 1, 2 or 3 for Item as Described;

- Detailed seller rating of 1 for Shipping Time;

- Negative or neutral feedback;

- Return initiated for a reason that indicates the item was not as described;

- eBay Money Back Guarantee (previously known as eBay Buyer Protection) or PayPal Purchase Protection case opened for an item not received or an item not as described;

- Seller-cancelled transactions.

Starting in August, sellers can have a maximum 5% of transactions with one or more transaction defects over the most recent evaluation period. Only transactions with U.S. buyers will count.

eBay will implement the new defect rate as a seller performance measure in August.

eBay will be holding online workshops to help sellers understand the new standards on March 13 at 1 pm Pacific and on March 26 at 11 am Pacific.

eBay's seller checklist:

Other changes are on the way in the U.S., including changes to Managed Returns and a new extended holiday return policy. And in an effort to optimize for Google, eBay is making category and item specific changes.

Another change likely to be unpopular is changes to tracking: Top Rated Sellers, who must have tracking uploaded to eBay on 90% of their transactions within their stated handling time, must now have validated tracking numbers - meaning ones that eBay can validate - eBay must receive at least one carrier scan.

See more details about the eBay Spring Seller Update here - And details about eBay UK changes here - which will include fee changes.

If ebay dares to write us and told us we are too much defective to be TRS, it should have the ethics to publish the complete statistics.

How did ebay game the system?  Why is 3 stars gamed?  Why is transaction cancellation gamed?  ebay has to publish JD's 2014 incentive performance target.  What is the maximum reward?  $500M?  or another under the table deal like the Skype deal?  These are all part of the variables JD is using in his game.   ebay sellers has the right to know the full story behind all these STUPID criteria in Spring Seller Release.

Icahn need to be move in fast to STOP JDs  self-destruction count down and destroying evidence.

eBay needs to make major changes in other areas and leave us good sellers alone! Is the TRS discount really worth the bullsh** one has to endure from eBay when your sales drop or buyers don't leave feedback??  You can't force people to buy and you can't force them to leave feedback either. And this 90 day return crap over the holidays??  I don't offer returns to begin with, but I sure as hell wouldn't give people 90 days to return something.  You know it would be damaged, ripped, etc. and ready for the garbage can!!!   Ebay needs to get their heads out of their "crack"!!  Who comes up with these ridiculous changes!!!!  Maybe they should try selling and see what abuse we take from buyers!!!!  Bet they'd think twice about all these changes!!!

I've got to make a comment here that I am betting will sound all too familiar to many of us who are posting here and are angry.

eBay and it's unexcusable CEO fail to realise that their true customer is the seller. We are the one in the trenches, we are the people who make it all happen - and without us, there would be no eBay.  Donahoe may be the golden child of Wall Street, but those who speculate, advise and forecast do so from a different prospective. They see the past trends of growth. They see what Donahoe has done to push eBay into a positive light for the stock investors... not us "time and effort" investors. Carl Icahn seems to be seeing something that others are overlooking or just can't see from their angle on this mess of what eBay has become and is becoming.

I feel that the sweep of thinning out sellers last fall was a mixed blessing. Many of the sellers who were closed really did hurt all of us by pulling down eBay's reputation as a good venue to purchase items. Others were innocent bystanders who simply did not deserve to be closed... often the victim of back luck with bad buyers and other factors beyond their control. However what I see is eBay trying to do the same thing again. This time nearly all of the victims will be good sellers. Yet too many high volume poor performing sellers will remain. A couple very poor experiences of mine as a buyer were through sellers who are eBay's stellar performers.

My deep concern personally is that I will be one of the next to go. 100% feedback, TRS, flawless DRSs and I absolutely bust my butt to give 110% customer service. When I was in the regular job market, I earned that reputation - now that I am semi-retired and have turned to eBay as my sole source of income (and for what I sell, which is mainly restored vintage audio equipment, eBay is by far my best venue) - I can't afford to have a combination of a neg from a soccer mom having a bad day, problems with scammers who will count against me, and people who abuse the returns system because they changed their mind. As sellers we are forced to cave in to feedback extortion, to cheerfully accept "defective" items back in the name of 110% customer satisfaction, even though the customer simply changed their mind, borrowed it,  can't figure out how to use it or broke it. Then add shipping damage even when packed to the extreme.

After this bomb was dropped on all of us this week, I've been too depressed to even list anything. Sigh.

Let me ask you all one question.
At least is been a thought of mine for a very long time.

Why we haven't by now any type of universal representation. I mean every other corporation has a union representing their workers.

I'm not completely fond of them but I can also see why they are need it.

Will it help, or will it be a waste of time.

Let me know cause by sticking together we might get somewhere.

@ebayroadkill,

You, and many other here, overlook the most material point of all: ultimately, eBay does not want YOU as a seller: it has been clearly stated that Johnny Ho’s dream is to turn eBay into world’s online “Westfield Mall” for the “leading retailers, brands and manufacturers of the world”. With respect, that is unlikely to include anyone reading this website. Further, you are wrong in thinking that, just bacuse you pay fees, you are eBay’s “true customer”; eBay now is principally and desperately interested only in retaining buyers because it is the number of buyers that will enable the Ho to attract and retain his “preferred” merchants …

Whether you like it or not, that is the Ho’s stated plan; whether he can succeed in his dream, with the reputations that eBay and “PreyPal” are developing, is doubtful; will he destroy the eBay marketplace as we know it along the way? Probably. But, in such destruction there is no problem for the Ho and this gaggle of feathered friends: they have well provisioned their lifeboats for the possibility of a foundering. The real question is, are you making plans for the post foundering time and are you now wearing your lifejacket 24/7?

I doubt even Carl Icahn can save eBay now and he would probably not change much anyway, but, regardless, it’s fun watching Johnny Ho squirm in the meantime …

For sellers to have an ebay union- a general union of internet sellers- something like 60% would have to sign a formal intent to join.
I delved into this about 2 years ago (about 2 years ago right Ina?), there is a proxy system that needs to be developed and something like 60% of ALL sellers on ebay would have to sign an intent to join- this is difficult and they know it. An easier choice that I examined was an affiliation with an existing union- the proxy rules are much looser when affiliated with an existing union.
These are difficult obstacles to work through and that is why it has not happened.
I toyed with the idea that we could arrange it on Ina's site but really less that 10% of all ebay sellers even visit here so it would take some real and organized work.
I would still work on it if there is support and I actually live in DC- shhhhhhh.

Clear your cookies WHENEVER you visit ANY site (ANY ebay stock pages or stories, here, Rateebay; etc) that criticizes ebay- they TRACK YOU and they DO clip what little exposure you still may have. If you doubt me and have other income- go to rateebay and then list and you will instantly see a 90%-95% drop in your sales- FACT.
Ming for President and public presentations, Phil in charge of ethics, Annie for PR. I guess I could be the secretary or head of resolutions or something- LOL!

I have to agree, I have been selling at ok rate many times and whenever I have visited any place that users are angry about eBay but voicing truthful opinions, my sales drop off the radar for weeks it seems, I have always suspected this, but cannot prove it, but I see HOWLER you have also, and I agree there is something in my opinion that is spot on about this !

Estimated delivery time is the thing that is killing me right now, fedexsmartpost times are crazy wrong.  Griff said on the ebay radio show yesterday that eBay has no control over estimated delivery times, that the shipping companies mandate the estimates. What a joke!

Attention Gypsy Witch, I am not sure if they actually are or how if they do, but when Howler brought that point up, I am telling the honest truth that there has indeed been times in the past when my sales were steady, then literally fell of the planet after I visited any site or place on the web that had sellers legitimate issues with the way eBay handles us.

I had this happen to me a few times, so I started clearing cache and cookies as howler suggested.

It just seems odd I noticed that, and howler brought it up also

"Griff said on the ebay radio show yesterday that eBay has no control over estimated delivery times, that the shipping companies mandate the estimates."

And sellers have no control of packages shipped once they leave their hands. But yet...ebay makes sellers responsible.

I swear every time Griff opens his mouth....what an arrogant, condescending...I just want to scream!!

Hey Gypsy,
I believe it is more stealh than that, when we signed up years ago it was clear in the UA that we were agreeing to having tracking cookies attached to our accounts and they use those cookies to see where we visit. They were great then but we all have talked many times about the cookies since then.
this did not seem to be a problem until- you guessed 6-7 years ago.
Turbo-lister is klunky and always causes problems so I dump the whole file- saved ads and all about every 6 months and start fresh- usually this fixes a lot of slowness, TL mid ad shutdowns; etc.
It also makes all your new ads new again- know its a lot of work but you will get more sales with fresh ads and photos- we know this. Always clear your cookies and dump your tl and re-install it as this has worked wonders for me- it's all the half-baked updates- things stop jiving together.
keep your ftc going against that perv as most folks quit and it does no good (I know your gonna do this). Dump tl and come back and tell us if it helped.
Thanks for the confirmation and support LDSbrother.
:-)MH Rsepect to all.

LOOK at the shares repurchased this 1/4 by ebay for the stock buyback/executive stock incentive plan- 14,720,000 shares! Look at all the March 1 insider transactions- no wonder the stock has been buoyed!
yahoo search- ebay stock price- insider transactions- this is why this stock is still where it is.
Huge insider buying to give to the execs- they recently got permission to buy 4 BILLION in shares.
It looks like JD and execs plan to siphon a lot of cash out of this company this year.
Take a look folks.
Stock that they have purchased this quarter so far equals what ebays total sale are in 1 good trading day- this is a lesson from ebay on how to BUOY your stock during tough downtrends- buy your own stock when it is low to increase the stock price- and gift it to your execs in stock.
yahoo search- enter ebay stock price- hit the link for the summary yahoo ebay page- hit insider transactions. look at all the march 1 transactions by the execs- they always stop all their transactions a month or so away from reporting times.

When you are on the Internet, your computer has an IP address that the server can see. If you check your speed on a site such as speedtest.net, you'll see your IP address.

The IP is assigned to your home/office/hotspot and depending on the Internet provider, may change every few weeks, or may stay fixed.

Workaround is to use a public computer such as the library, to do research.

LDS: that all makes too much sense then!!!!   There's been times when I'd search for my own items on eBay and ya know, sometimes they never show up in the search results!!!!   And that has happened to a friend of mine who also searched for her items.

And IP number (thanx roadkill!!) was what I meant by computer number.

The only thing I can say is, whatever I post is the truth, and a lot of people have a problem with truth nowadays.  So if eBay wants to pout and "punish" me by dropping my sales via their search box, go for it!!!   I've got quite a few "followers" who buy from me regularly.

But thanx for the advice - I will clear my cookies, etc.

HOWLER:  I don't use Turbo-Lister or any other program like Auctiva - just ebay's listing tool.

But like I just replied to LDS, if they want to punish me for telling the truth, go for it!!! But I will be clearing my cookies, etc. more often for "just because".   My pc obviously runs better when I do that.

Strange that when I run my Super Anti-Spyware program, it sure picks up a lot of tracking cookies!!    So whoever is tracking me:   GET OUT OF MY PC!!!!  LOL!!!!!

One gets to the point where you just get tired of all the crap in life!!   I reached that point a couple years ago.

I don't go around starting arguments or making comments to people in my area (bunch of drunken, in-bred heathens!!), but I won't back down either!!!  If people have the b***s to say something to me -  a woman who dresses like a gypsy and/or witch and/or snobby rich b**ch (I'm far from that!!)and has a snobby attitude by NOT talking to these people around here - they're getting it right back!!!   And, the stickers on my car definitely match my attitude!!  I'm nice...until it's time NOT to be nice!!!  LOL!!!!!

My motto is the song by Tom Petty:  "Won't Back Down"!!

Howler, you're awesome!!!  Keep up the great postings!!!
