eBay Sets Seller Sales Goals in Motivational Promotion

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is taking an unusual approach to boost sales on its eBay.com marketplace. In what might be a first-of-its-kind promotion, it gave some sellers personalized sales goals along with an offer to coach them, and tied their success to a sweepstakes.

eBay sent an invitation to some sellers presenting them with a sales target to reach by the middle of December and the middle of January. If they succeed in boosting their sales by 25%, their names will be entered into a sweepstakes for a chance to win some commission fee-free listings next year.

eBay is offering to help invited sellers meet the sales goals it set for them, promising to send them personalized progress reports and "pro seller tips."

Here's what one recipient had to say of eBay's offer:

With sales down 95%, eBay suddenly thinks I can attain a sales goal of (close to $1500) in a little over 2 months. I've barely made more than $300 a month (down from $3000/mo back in 2012). So does this mean they are going to SHOW my listings? Are other "small" sellers receiving this? While I'll take the boost here at the year end, I'm not holding my breath.

Hopefully the eBay managers who thought up the promotion have taken into account the selling limits eBay imposes on sellers' accounts. As we described last December, sellers who try to boost their sales on eBay can be stymied by seller limits eBay places on their accounts.

We've got the details in tomorrow's Newsflash, in the meantime, let us know if you've received the invitation and your impressions of this motivational sales promotion.

Update: Here's a link to the Newsflash article with more information.

Having been with Ebay for many years, I found myself in a situation where I could not re-list items and could not list new items, in fact, couldn't do ANYTHING.
The problem is, this is now DAY FIVE !!!!
I have called Customer Service EVERY DAY, only to be told, a report has been sent to the TECH DEPT to which NO ONE can actually pick up a phone and TALK TO !!
The FRUSTRATION on my part has been growing, this evening I called Customer Service, only to have someone tell me they would put me through to the LIMITS Dept, at this, I blew a Gasket !! DID they even read the NOTES !
What with the hold times, getting personal who do NOT know what they are talking about, the present ad campaign ''When you ready come and get it'' seems laughable !!
On-line I try to re-list and get sent to the Announcement Board, which of course says nothing, then when I try to do a NEW listing, it takes me straight away to the Announcement Board and it's in GERMAN !!!
I've now missed a very important week on Ebay , no Black Friday deals from me :(
My listings are dwindling and I can do NOTHING :(
The Tech Dept must have a PHONE !!! Someone Call them and tell them to FIX my problem !!! PLEASE

''You can sell more than you think'' - yes I can anywhere but on ebay.

We'll help you at every step'' - no thanks ebay. You have ''helped'' me enough by NOT showing my listings until I loss powerseller status, TRS+ and all discounts.

Offering a sweepstakes as an incentive to jump and leap over too high hoops? A percent off final value fees? Sheesh ebay can you spare a dime? Complete a-holes! Nothing from nothing isn't something. The lottery is looking better and with better odds AND a greater chance of a real payoff.

Which was exactly the plan from the beginning. They want you back so they can charge you higher FVFs and listing fees.

The invitation is for sellers who sell 2000 dollars or less a year or for sellers who sell 2 million or more a month.

By the way, the way that eBay will "help you" sell more is only if you accept their suggested prices ( you need to lower your prices 50% ), offer Free Shipping, Next Day Delivery, Free Gifts and a Trip Vegas.

What a Joke!

Don't laugh.  Knowing THEM they'll start to penalize sellers who don't reach their "projected goals" each month.

Well, I have to give them some credit, an idiot idea, is better then no idea, but  their going to have to really be much more creative to pull their company from the sink hole,

We are selling at other multiple venues now,  we will NEVER put  more of our inventory back in the ebay basket ever, again

They can promote whatever they want, it won't change our minds ever, we learned our lesson, the hard way with ebay, and the scars have not healed.

Well my projected goal (and by the way current goal) is to get as far away from ebay as possible! Putting ebay as far out of mind and not even as an afterthought. Amnesia would be great. This would make a great topic and survey for ecommercebytes in the new year. Sellers what is your projected goal for 2015 and will ebay be a part of that goal?

eBay CSRs don't even know their own company polcies. eBay employees shop Amazon more than eBay. HTH are either of those groups qualified enough to coach an experienced seller?

I did not get the offer. I think the basic idea of trying to encourage sellers to try to raise their sales is a good idea, but I don't think customer service reps would be much help since most sellers know their product much better than any customer service rep would know. Being entered in a sweepstakes would not encourage me to greatly increase my ebay work. I've never won a sweepstakes

What a bunch of morons! A sweepstake? Oh, how exciting!

Maybe I could reach an Ebay suggested quoted, but it wouldn't be on Ebay.

I have about 300 of an item running on one of my Ebay accounts, and it is even TRS (which it shouldn't be anymore from lack of sales). I am lucky to sell one item every two weeks lately.

I started listing the same kind of stuff on Etsy about a month ago. I'm getting 1 to 3 orders a day, and I only have about 60 items listed there.

My Ebay sales on three accounts are dead in the water. I am still selling postcards on one account, but that has even slowed down to a dribble. I get orders where the listing has the description missing, or it is all clumped up, like the HTML is missing. There is something definitely wrong with their servers.

I do like the idea of Ebay giving us Amazon gift cards as an incentive, since I refuse to buy anything on Ebay anymore.

For me personally I think this is just plain silly.  I say that for a couple of reason.

Ebay has offered help to sellers for years.  They have special so called consultants you can access and they will review your listings with you to see where they feel you can improve on them to increase sales.  I don't see this as much different from that other than the sweepstake.

I typically will participate in this every year or so just to see if anything is different I wasn't aware of.  Never have I had this help my sales.

More importantly I think my listings were just fine.  Then suddenly something happened OUTSIDE my control late February or early March.  Sales started significantly declining.  And by September they were down by about 60%.

I didn't change anything.  I didn't suddenly start getting a bunch of defects or anything.  My account was still in good standing.

But things certainly changed with EBay.  At about the same time Cassini went site wide, they were hacked and they got in trouble with Google.

Personally I think time would be better spent to clean up the mess they have made with the searches both on Ebay and with Google.  That would benefit more sellers and would provide Ebay with more income.  Far more than helping a few select sellers will.

I think "sales down 95%" says it all. There can be no recovery until Ebay moves back into all sellers are equal market.

That reminds me, very recently I again started receiving a bunch of "followed search" emails that I had not been getting for some months; so at least they have fixed something that they had previously broken; then the question is how did they manage to stuff it up in the first place?

The eBay executive suite—where the incompetent mingle with the disingenuous, the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid ... http://bit.ly/11F2eas

I do believe ebay is getting desperate, this holiday season...

The site is absolutely overrun by Chinese sellers,  and No Buyer in their right mind is buying ANY Christmas gifts now from ebay / china, the cut-off point was last week, it's way too late, they will never arrive for Christmas.

I believe ebay now knows, their holiday sales will be looking very disappointing, and their doing anything, they can to take more from the seller, while putting more in their pocket,

Extended holiday returns, and now trying to woo, sellers to list and sell more,. this might have worked 5 years ago, but it won't fly today, ebay can Go directly to hell,,,
