Breaking News: Another eBay Outage Hits the Site

eBay is experiencing another outage, according to EcommerceBytes readers and reports from around the web. "I am writing to let you know that Ebay appears to be down again this evening," said a reader.

"I have been unable to access MyEbay or my selling page for about an hour," he continued. "I can log on to the main site page. These problems began at 3:40 PM EDT according to downdetector.com and hit me approximately two hours later."

Other readers reported the problem on Ecommerce EKG. Said one eBay seller from UK, "Another glitch on ebay.co.uk tonight and it's a cracker. Cannot place bids on auctions!! I have tried 5 different items (and 5 individual sellers) on my watch list that end tomorrow and not one will accept a custom bid or one of ebay's suggested bids. I thought my auctions had been quiet tonight, now I know why!!"

Another responded, "Not just U.K. The U.S. site has totally fallen apart. Feedback fell to 0, cant't list items can't find my store etc. Worst crash I have seen in years."

DownDetector.com is also getting many reports of problems, both in the U.S. and UK.

eBay has been experiencing many technical issues and outages, seeming to strike the site on the weekend. With this being a holiday weekend in the U.S. and with Canada's Thanksgiving next week, one can't help begin to wonder if external forces (hackers) may be involved - they're known for keeping track of holidays as good times to play mischief.

With the holiday shopping season gearing up, and with eBay driving traffic to the site with a new campaign that kicks off on Monday, site instability is a major concern to sellers.

Basset, and what a shameful UA it is.

It might as well say "We aren't going to show your items, but we are more than happy to take your money".

I know I am old school, but how is this legal, user agreement or not?

Redford, it IS shameful.

What are you going to do? Take them to court? I'm sure they have binding arbitration and if they don't, eBay flaunts the law and demands that you have to fight them in California.

It's a vile, nauseating company that continuously spits in the face of Trust and Decency. After that, they demand that you bend over backwards to satisfy your customers.

People who sell on eBay should be ashamed for supporting them with their business. Your participation encourages other insects to fly toward the big, lit, purple box on the porch.

I don't think it's hackers, I think it's incompetent eBay programmers.  All the tests they're running.

Ed, I do my best not to judge who and why sellers sell on eBay. You never know what their financial situation is or what monumental problems that they may be facing in life.  Yes, it is bad, but an extra $50.00 per month in their pocket might be the difference between someone getting their medication or not or someone paying for their child's school lunch.

@Rexford,

It probably would not be “legal” under any “consumer” protection legislation (ie for those making purchases for personal, non-business use); but when you are dealing with eBay as a “business”—as a seller or buyer—you are not covered by the normal consumers protection laws; you are a business and you are presumed to be able to look after yourself: if you don’t like the 270 page micro-print contract that eBay offers then you should not enter into it. In that respect eBay has its sellers over the barrel …

Regardless, eBay Inc. would undoubtedly be the most unscrupulous commercial organisation on the planet, demonstrably involved in massive criminal fraud activity. The only good bit is that it appears that eBay’s grossly unethical business practices are, finally, catching up with it …

The eBay executive suite—where the incompetent mingle with the disingenuous, the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid ... http://bit.ly/11F2eas

Philip, I honestly think that the only thing that can save this company is for them to reverse all policies and practices that have hurt small sellers. That would pretty much require them to trash their current user agreement.  Will it happen?  I sincerely doubt it.  Arrogance is a hard thing to chip away.

I am seriously thinking that EBay is imploding. Their already poor customer service has gotten worse, which seems like an impossibility, and the glitches and outages have increased dramatically. Logically any successful business that receives the high number of complaints about their customer service that EBay does, usually takes immediate steps to correct the problem, but EBay appears to be not only ignoring the complaints about their customer service, they seem to be purposely becoming worse. To me that shows ignorance and failure, and that spells disaster for any business.  Ebay is getting worse by the day in every way, and to me that clearly indicates implosion.

Tornad0sRul, Donahoe's legacy.  I always knew he'd leave his mess for someone else to clean up.  If that is even possible at this point.

The folks at Amazon must have a good laugh over the eBay keystone cops management every day.

I agree with SmallSellersAreToast - eBay must be planting fake buyers who screw up Seller ratings with BS complaints. My newest is a buyer who had a PO Box return address on file. I don't ship to PO boxes, so she switched to a street mailing address. Buyer informs me of this in a long-winded email. I mail to the new address Buyer posted with payment. Buyer sends another long-winded email saying the new mailing address does not accept mail, blah blah and s/he told me asap. This is not true of course because she emailed two days after I shipped the item. I can feel it in my blood. Buyer will claim she never received item & it's all my fault because I was supposed to magically know the address she provided didn't accept mail, and then resend it to another address never provided by Buyer. I will likely lose my item, the buyer's payment and eat my shipping costs.

I'm disgusted by the crap being pulled by these so-called buyers. I look at eBay's 100-a-day free listings and just keep moving. I'm transferring my stuff to Etsy, where sales are not out of this world but at least I don't have to deal with the scumbags at eBay.

1/3/15 - aaaaaannnnnddd it's down again! Since it's a new year, I suppose this would have to be the first outage of the year? Wonder what eBay will blame tonight's crash on?
