Breaking News: Another eBay Outage Hits the Site

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is experiencing another outage, according to EcommerceBytes readers and reports from around the web. "I am writing to let you know that Ebay appears to be down again this evening," said a reader.

"I have been unable to access MyEbay or my selling page for about an hour," he continued. "I can log on to the main site page. These problems began at 3:40 PM EDT according to downdetector.com and hit me approximately two hours later."

Other readers reported the problem on Ecommerce EKG. Said one eBay seller from UK, "Another glitch on ebay.co.uk tonight and it's a cracker. Cannot place bids on auctions!! I have tried 5 different items (and 5 individual sellers) on my watch list that end tomorrow and not one will accept a custom bid or one of ebay's suggested bids. I thought my auctions had been quiet tonight, now I know why!!"

Another responded, "Not just U.K. The U.S. site has totally fallen apart. Feedback fell to 0, cant't list items can't find my store etc. Worst crash I have seen in years."

DownDetector.com is also getting many reports of problems, both in the U.S. and UK.

eBay has been experiencing many technical issues and outages, seeming to strike the site on the weekend. With this being a holiday weekend in the U.S. and with Canada's Thanksgiving next week, one can't help begin to wonder if external forces (hackers) may be involved - they're known for keeping track of holidays as good times to play mischief.

With the holiday shopping season gearing up, and with eBay driving traffic to the site with a new campaign that kicks off on Monday, site instability is a major concern to sellers.

@JA - that's not my experience. A Buyer used "Return for Defective Item" and was issued a label capped at my initial USPS First Class mailing cost of $2.09. The item was not defective, so I reported the Buyer. Theoretically eBay would remove the defect, I would be happier, and the Buyer would be none the wiser. Of course I truthfully listed the shipping weight at 4 ounces and paid the initial postage myself. You might get a different result if you charged your Buyer $8 S&H, guessed at the weight as "under one pound", or didn't complete the shipping data when setting up your listing? The blanks can come back to haunt you.

@Philip

Andreesen article seems to have mysteriously disappeared. I get a 404 error message and find no reference to the article on the home page.

Can you give us a synopsis?

Shop Ship - the item was actually free shipping with the label being printed right through eBay's labels.  It was free shipping - first class parcel 7ounces.  The return label was definitely UPS issued by eBay at the 1 pound rate at $7.87 I think.  Ebay provided a UPS tracking number.  Maybe because I had the listing as free shipping instead of calculated?  Ebay should have still been able to pull up their own label.

I did report the buyer immediately, but unless they do this a couple more times, I don't see my undeserved defect going anywhere.

Everyone, check out some of the threads on the eBay community boards about the new return process (not the managed returns).  Lots of surprise situations for people being rammed into the program and lots of defects being handed out.

Can I please just have the old eBay back?
I handle my own transactions.
I ship timely and pack responsibly.
I deal with my own customers.
I represent everything I sell as accurate as is possible.
I provide excellent customer service and do not need anyone to tell me how to handle MY OWN business.
Is that too much to ask for?

Icahn: Andreesen Screwed More People Than Casanova – Transcript

“If you really want to get me going. He is the quintessential guy that is wrong with corporate America…It is hard to hear him, because he talks about it with a squeaky voice that only a dog can understand exactly what he says…At the risk of sounding corny, one of the things that really upsets and outrages me is guys like this. They get on their high horse and they are arrogant.”

“I do not care [that he called me evil]. I will not go dignify a bunch of ranting he did on a TV show…He’s the kind of guy I get outraged at because he preaches a duty. He is given a duty and he reaches to the sky…”

“I think he is really mad at me because I was a force to help get the company [eBay/PayPal] split. You know what? I do not believe he wanted it split. I think he was planning to buy PayPal cheaply as he did Skype. I feel good about that because he probably knows a couple of guys want to buy PayPal. He screwed more people than Casanova. I will say more if you want to ask about it.”

“I absolutely [think he should be kicked off the eBay board]. He should not be on it. You know, He should not be on that board. It is a sin he is on that board, in my opinion. We agreed not to disparage. I signed it and I lived by it. He violated it. And not I am free. I really feel good about that. I am sure he will hear from you again and I’m sure I will hear from him. He will say more hateful stuff. But, you know I am not the kind of guy who keeps quite.”

“I am not really frustrated with Silicon Valley. You have got other really good guys there. but there are real bad guys. There are a bunch of bad guys all over corporate America. I am sure a lot of them, I have gone after a lot of them here and I am sure they unanimously hate me.”

“He has reported he recused himself… He influenced and went and bought that stock, and he knew Microsoft wanted it, and yet he bought it on the cheap. He literally stole it. So you know, as far as I am concerned, that is absolutely no excuse. I think it should really be looked into…”

SmallSellersAreToast said:

"Google destroyed many small businesses and eBay is doing the same and I believe all on purpose as a takeover of internet selling for the "big boys"."

I agree with this ! Hack aside, NOTHING has KILLED my remaining business like the Google Demotion/Punishment of eBay

That has struck the DEATH BLOW to me and all small sellers, this close to Christmas, my sales are HORRENDOUS for this close to Christmas, UNPRECEDENTED !!!! I thank Google for that

The more I think about Wenig and the phrase The "NEW" eBay I am worried

I think this is Wenig's small seller extermination phrase, like Donahoes Disruptive innovation was death and pain to us small sellers !

Surely Wenig's "NEW" eBay will not include ANY benefits, or ways for small sellers to succeed !

@lds
I agree with you, sales are worse than ever, I started to see an abnormal slide after last holiday season, they kept saying, if after the holidays, it's summer, whatever the excuse. Well I'm down over 60% over last sept, and listing much more.
I've been selling 15 years, I don't sell "trends" I sell more or less classics/basics, I know my items are in line price wise, I'm trs, offer free ship, etc.
I think google has hurt ebay, but what has hurt the most is ebay hiding our items, better said, not showing them at all. I told cs last week, if my item has to be 999 out of 1000 so be it, but at least there's a chance someone will find it.
I urge you guys to run a search with different id's on different browsers, you will see how off the results are. It's not "best match" either.
I've had relatives in other states do a search, where my item should come up, and it's not there.
That will kill any business.

@fashionista  I agree with you, eBay hides or whatever our products.

This is horrible ! I had an item sell for $5 yesterday on a Sunday, offered to the WORLD !

This close to Christmas ! - Then if it picks up a few days like it should, it dies right back down, with views and bids, something is SERIOUSLY F*cked up with the search !

And yes, your correct I have had Best Match look like my item is right up their, but no bids or views, call my friend/family 10 states away, they can't find it !

I think Devin Wenig has a lot of work to undo from that @sshle Donahoe !

eBay is dying for sure ! Donahoe can blame us all he likes, he hastened it with his nonsense !

So Devin, your known as the CEO who is going to be over the NEW eBay !

Wel Sir, unless you do something spectacular to bring back the magic, you may as well be known as the Undertaker, who is taking over as the CEO of the DECEASED eBay !

Fellow sellers, even IF we don't quit or have buyers falsely exterminate us with opinions, our futures on eBay are is SERIOUS PERIL !

I am not sure this site can even exist much longer literally after the destruction Donahoe has levied !

Basset says "Perhaps that new eBay commercial was successful beyond their wildest dreams."

That must explain our two (yes, count them, two) sales over the weekend.  LOL  And that is between two eBay sites.

Oh, I long for the old days where auctions worked and ended well, there were no site crashes, no defects for situations beyond a seller's control and before an idiotic man came along who thought he had a vision for eBay and then ruined it with his "disruptive innovation".  (Oh, and I miss time ending soonest and a level playing field.)   That goose that laid the golden egg has been beaten to smithereens.

Ina, I would love for you or someone on your staff to as David Wenig (or another one of eBay's esteemed c-level management) why eBay take sellers' money but hide their items.  We all know that it is happening. There is no denying it.

Rexford speaking of eBay hiding our items, reminds of where I saw reference to that very thing (no guarantee of visibility) recently:

Was reading something with the subject matter of robots, spiders, scrapers, viruses, pyramid schemes, spam and other scary sounding things -

No, not a sci-fi novel, but the new eBay UA. Those things are ALL there!

Maybe why this is why my selling has gone down to a trickle the past few days? Had been picking up steam as I always do this time of the year, selling a lot. Sunday nights historically are my best, did not sell one thing last night.  Have not sold one thing since Saturday, and then only two items. In fact the last week has been really strange, hardly any sales or any questions.   My selling average is down for the past 7 days about 75%.  What gives eBay? You expect us to give our customers a great experience, Why do you not hold yourself to the same high standards to the sellers who are actually YOUR customers?

Hey Devin ! Us small sellers are the salt of the eBay earth !

The backbone of this company, we built it u p to what it was, and Donahoe destroyed it !

Now it may truly be to late for you to save it Wenig !

Just know this, when eBay helps the MASSES of small sellers succeed, then eBay GROWS and succeeds !

I can't honestly believe how good of a seller I am and others, and when Donahoe took over to exterminate the BAD SELLERS, he literally let folks like me be or almost be exterminated on the lying ass opinions of buyers with NO RECOURSE or APPEALS !

That abusive terror Donahoe inflicted on us good, honest hardworking sellers must NEVER be forgotten !

Wenig, we will treat everything you do, even if a step in the right direction with caution and skepticism because of your predecessor ! And rightfully so

You Sir, have MUCH work to do, to rebuild the trust of small sellers, and make it so honest sellers, do NOT get exterminated from opinions, with no recourse !

Donahoe you truly are a POS ! Enjoy the spoils you have reaped destroying innocent sellers and their families !

Donahoes reign was unbearable ! I salute all you sellers who survived it ! That man is unfair, and illogical to have a one size fits all lying opinion extermination policy with no recourse as long as he did !

I could NEVER sleep at night if I did to people what Donahoe did, and get made insane amounts of money !

It was so evident that jerkoff NEVER sold on eBay, and had he of, he would of failed immediately under the BULLSH*T rules he put in place !

Seriously, Ming was spot on, eBay is close to not even existing, I am in the best of the best TRS and can't produce sh*t for an income on items I should be making a KILLING on, especially at this time of year, and I supposedly get good placement with best match !

As I said fellow sellers, our future on eBay is in SERIOUS PERIL !

Wenig has 2 choices, resurrect this site, or it will implode from Donahoes destruction of the community and market place !

I used to like buyers before Donahoe, now I treat then all as the BAD GUY secretly, I fear them, I am paranoid about them, they are out to destroy me, I beg them, I give them Royal service, and still I cannot please them all, and just a couple can get a seller eradicated from selling !

What a damn joke Donahoe has made this site ! He should be forced to pay all his pay back to the Company and have it invested towards undoing his destruction !

Nuff said for now !

@WhatsUp2656 wrote . '''' They are so messed up. I have restrictions on buyers without a paypal account''''

Check your ebay settings you might have ''Must have a Paypal account'' turned ON

Just another one of probably 500 screwed up, things at the ebay company, that they feel are perfectly fine,

And just today I noticed they added or are testing? yet another feature, ''most viewed price range''

In a category we sell in there is a consistent 6000 items, when you click on this button the items drop to about 1000, showing only items within the price range ebay has determined,

Another Senseless, totally useless, stupid, sales killing, feature, decided by idiots

The people running ebay into the ground, sure are doing a great job at it,

The coders at ebay must have a lot of freedom to do whatever they want, because it's a mess, and what they are doing is destroying ebay sellers one line of code at a time,

And I am sure there MUST be corruption going on, without a doubt, wink wink.

Some ecrater sellers had trouble with PP last week to the point the ecrater team had to try to handle the issue and it was supposedly fixed, but I got an order supposedly through PP but no actual payment. I emailed the customer and am still waiting to see if they respond as to if they decided not to finish the order or PP actually glitched on them.

If ebay had been having all these troubles in the beginning, it never would have become a household word.
