Breaking News: Another eBay Outage Hits the Site

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is experiencing another outage, according to EcommerceBytes readers and reports from around the web. "I am writing to let you know that Ebay appears to be down again this evening," said a reader.

"I have been unable to access MyEbay or my selling page for about an hour," he continued. "I can log on to the main site page. These problems began at 3:40 PM EDT according to downdetector.com and hit me approximately two hours later."

Other readers reported the problem on Ecommerce EKG. Said one eBay seller from UK, "Another glitch on ebay.co.uk tonight and it's a cracker. Cannot place bids on auctions!! I have tried 5 different items (and 5 individual sellers) on my watch list that end tomorrow and not one will accept a custom bid or one of ebay's suggested bids. I thought my auctions had been quiet tonight, now I know why!!"

Another responded, "Not just U.K. The U.S. site has totally fallen apart. Feedback fell to 0, cant't list items can't find my store etc. Worst crash I have seen in years."

DownDetector.com is also getting many reports of problems, both in the U.S. and UK.

eBay has been experiencing many technical issues and outages, seeming to strike the site on the weekend. With this being a holiday weekend in the U.S. and with Canada's Thanksgiving next week, one can't help begin to wonder if external forces (hackers) may be involved - they're known for keeping track of holidays as good times to play mischief.

With the holiday shopping season gearing up, and with eBay driving traffic to the site with a new campaign that kicks off on Monday, site instability is a major concern to sellers.

@DingDong My account vanished for over an hour last night as well. Kept receiving same message as you. This happened around 4:10 PM PST. Don't know how long it had been down before that. So I logged in with my second account, one I use strictly for buying, ran a ''find member'' search and couldn't even find my seller ID. Said ''no such seller.'' I got worried then, because I keep that account open, even though I'm not selling on eBay any longer, as a feedback reference for potential buyers at my other venues. I called CS and was put on hold. The recording said I'd be on hold for at least 51 minutes, so their call center must have overloaded. Came here to Ecommercebytes EKG, but at that point, I didn't find anything posted.

I tried logging in again after about a half-hour and, strange thing, I was able to log in, my seller ID was back online and everything looked fine. I didn't think I was hacked because I use a two-part security key log-in. But I WAS concerned that eBay had mistakenly deleted the wrong account, since I'm in the process of closing my second account. I figured eBay had just bungled and closed the wrong account, even though theoretically the two accounts aren't supposed to be connected.

So now I'm thinking about just closing both of them. Seems to be too many glitches and hacks all across the Internet lately.

Is eBay intentionally breaking the site?  And intentionally hurting small sellers?  I have good reason (3 times) to strongly believe eBay has "buyers/employees" who purposely buy to leave inappropriate feedback on small sellers.

I think there has to be much more than all these periodic breaks to eBay's system.  Sure they likely have bad programmers, but maybe by design.  Possibly they want eBay to fall with the split up with Paypal so it gets bought up.  Copycat Amazon to become a big retailer site for the most part to look more attractive to a buyer of eBay.

Google destroyed many small businesses and eBay is doing the same and I believe all on purpose as a takeover of internet selling for the "big boys".

Course breaking the site seems like a bad way to sell off a site like eBay but maybe in their haste they are very careless?

WELCOME TO THE NEW EBAY!
Just another "cost of doing business" folks!
Maybe they're testing out a new feature. Permanent shutdown.

eBay should double its IT support and hire a second part-time tech student - preferably one with a complete set of star screw drivers?

TOS. You agreed to the condition that your item would not be visible all the time.

You are getting what you agreed to and paid for.

Showing other people's stuff... Well that kick below the belt is on the eHouse.

@Ed Gadfly ''You are getting what you agreed to and paid for'' is not good legal advice and is contrary to established American jurisprudence. Look up ''failure of consideration'' in your contracts Hornbook. More so, where eBay CS reads ''bought new 2 months ago now for parts only'' as saying ''new'' so too can eBay Members expect to see their listings on the web. eBay can't have it both ways by putting contradictory terms in its adhesive contracts that are unilaterally altered with obscure terms in unlikely places to find them.

sorry a little ot, but I have a return policy, NOT managed returns, and it does not indicate that on my listings, however, today, I got "return request"  buyer states loves the item but it's a little big.  My only options are 1) buyer return item for refund or 2) buyer keep item and I refund.
Excuse me, but it was free ship, and my terms state that upon return, original shipping will be deducted, I'm not paying for them to try it on.

Is this new?
I'm going to no returns soon, but I didn't think managed returns took effect yet

Same here, Fashionista! I take returns, but am not supposed to be in the automatic return program either - but I got the same request you did.

I also got a return request for something purchased over a month ago.
The buyer states it's not working and I offer a 30 day warranty.

I will not take this item back and if ebay wants to force it I will make
some noise about it.

I also had one open a case after two months of the purchase stating
the item does not work. The answer when I called ebay was that it was
buyer right to open a case.  Long story short he kept the item and got
the money back from me.

I do not have managed returns and all these years have worked issues
out with my buyers whenever there is one.
I don't need them telling me how to manage my returns.

By the way these are all tested working items they want to return.

i haven't called cs yet, but what I don't understand it's there's no other option. You can't offer a partial, and also I thought managed returns they had to abide by your terms( restocking fee etc.)  maybe someone in managed returns can enlighten us.
I will post after I talk to cs.

This is just wrong

Thanks fashionista, I guess we'll all find out together.

I chose the ''return item, buyer pay shipping'' choice. (fit was the reason for return)

I wonder what it looks like on the buyer end. I'm waiting for another return for fit reasons, but the buyer contacted me through my email address, not ebay.

We get different screen views for almost everything lately. Nothing is ever the same. I have not returned anything for a while, so I'm not sure what it looks like to request a return at this point.

Reminds me - Someone posted here  a while back that we could not refer to restocking fees - Pace? maybe.

Not sure where they were getting their info - but if it was Pace, it was probably solid info.

on subject - eBay working ok on all accounts here today. Knock on wood, but no ''off'' time.

My listings on eBay were eBay Managed Hassle Free Returns with a Restocking Fee for other than ISNAD. In September 2014 when a Buyer returned an item for personal reasons [changed mind] then ''managed returns'' did not charge my account for return postage, and I was shown an option for refunding the full amount, or deducting the re-stocking fee and refunding the balance. Apparently it's when the Buyer claims that the item is defective - true or not - that the return postage is charged to my eBay account. If the Buyer is gaming the system and is reported to eBay, then theoretically the ''defect return'' can be removed from the Seller's defect rating which is only viewable by the Seller.

Basset......just got off the phone, now please remember, this is the answer of one cs rep, it will differ with 10 reps!
He said this was NOT managed returns, this is to make it easier and more streamlined for the buyer...(I'm not a frequent returner either, but a few months ago we did, and I didn't find it complicated.)
He said I should just contact her directly, and refund her through PP, then request fvf as usual. Buyer needs to close "request" or it will drop off after 30 days.
He assured me several times this has nothing to do with defects.
I did ask about restocking fee, he said if I used managed returns I could put anything I wanted there. LOL of course buyer will always chose "not as described" so we get the full bang....a defect, and we pay shipping both ways.
If this was a lightweight item, I wouldn't mind, but it's a coat, I had it on sale, with free ship, and it was a large flat rate. I don't want to be out $15

Fashionista - Don't blame ya on a heavy coat! That is a lot of shipping cost to eat.

Keep us updated on how it all goes!

It looks like others are getting the same requests. Don't know if they are testing or this is the new ''look'' of returns process.

I was added to the new return process even though I don't participate in managed returns.  I've been on selling on eBay for 15 years and I don't need their help.  The buyer (on eBay for one week) did a BIN on a book.  The book was listed in the book category, the description described the condition and contents of the book, and the pictures showed the front and back covers of the book.  The buyer opened a not as described saying they thought they would be receiving the book and everything PICTURED ON THE FRONT OF THE BOOK COVER!

Long story short:
1) Initial reps told me to do nothing until the week for a return ran out - that nothing would happen, I wouldn't be penalized.  Try to message the buyer to work it out (never received anything from the buyer)
2) Bam! got hit with a defect because they opened it as not as described before the time period was even over.
3) Even though 7 customer service reps (both US and oversees) agreed with me, they all said the defect was not removable in cases of a "not as described return"
4) One US rep went on his lunch break to speak with a supervisor and the final advice was to return the money immediately so as not to get a 2nd defect - that they couldn't do anything about the first.
5) Due to a buyer on eBay for 1 week who did not look at anything other than the picture and lied, I now am out the book, the payment (with free shipping), have a "non-removable" defect, and am praying they don't use the $8 UPS return label eBay issued them for an item mailed USPS first class for $2.

This is what we have to look forward to.

JA
