eBay Nabs Another Retail Chain - OfficeMax Opens eBay Store

Looking for office supplies? Now you have a new way of shopping for binders, bubble wrap, shredders and office chairs: OfficeMax's new store on eBay. The office-supply retail chain set up the eBay Store last week and has accumulated six feedback ratings so far.

OfficeMax is taking advantage of eBay Shipping Discounts, a feature that lets any seller offer discounts to encourage higher-value orders - eBay automatically calculates the shipping discounts and deducts them from the total shipping costs of eligible orders for sellers who use the feature.

OfficeMax offers free delivery on orders over $24.95; orders less than $24.95 incur a $4.95 delivery fee. On the top of OfficeMax listing pages there's a callout to the free shipping offer that links to all eligible items. There's also a widget on the product listing page that shows how much more a customer has to spend in order to get free shipping.

OfficeMax accepts only PayPal and Bill Me Later on eBay and offers a 30-day return policy on office supplies and ink and toner, and a 14-day return policy on furniture, technology and software products.

Do Diamond PowerSellers Get Free Ride on Feedback?
As we've mentioned in EcommerceBytes, eBay has been working to attract large brands and retail chains and has been giving them perks since 2008 when John Donahoe took over from Meg Whitman as CEO. However, eBay's "March of the Diamond PowerSellers" has irked small sellers who resent eBay giving the Diamond-level PowerSellers greater exposure and reduced fees, and many believe the big brands are only interested in using eBay as a way to drive traffic to their own websites.

Some sellers also harbor suspicions that eBay also gives diamond sellers special treatment when it comes to customer feedback ratings, which eBay has denied in the past. Just yesterday a reader wrote about the ToysRUs store on eBay and its low feedback:

"One of the qualifications for Top Rated Seller status is that a seller must ''Have a positive Feedback rating of at least 98%". ToysRUs has now dropped to 97.9%, visible for all to see,... The only possible conclusion is that the term "Permanent Override" of DSRs, that some sellers have claimed eBay reps have occasionally mentioned, is true."

Large retailers on eBay do get their share of negative feedback ratings, and eBay continues to send emails to shoppers exclusively advertising offers from diamond sellers such as the one it sent recently on behalf of GNC.

eBay introduced the Diamond level to its PowerSeller structure in 2008 for sellers doing sales of $6 million in annual sales. Interestingly eBay no longer advertises the Diamond level on its page describing the PowerSeller program.

In addition to added marketing exposure it gives large retailers and brands, eBay also opens diamond seller inventory to its eBay Now same-day delivery service that it's testing in certain regions in the U.S.

Thoughts on the pros and cons of ordering items from a large retailer on eBay versus their other channels are welcome!

Tell a regular small ebay office supply seller that "ebay does not COMPETE with them" or steal their buyers because they DO.
MH
JD "unlike Amazon, we do not compete with our sellers".

Charging more for an item on ebay that you sell elsewhere for less is, of course, against policy.

Report these items and watch ebafia do nothing.

Current ebay management doesn't care at all about the long term.

It's ALL about making announcements and issuing dummied up numbers to drive stock prices up so they can further enrich themselves with the free stock ebay buys back and gives them.

By the time it becomes obvious to all that Donahoe turned around ebay into e-commerce irrelevance he'll be long gone to his San Francisco Bay hideaway luxury home or in tax haven for million/billinaires, Abu Dhabi.

We feel better now, although our sales are less than 1/5th to 1/6th what they once were after ebay's latest Best Match algorithm change be it full blown Casinni or not, our sell through rate is still 4 times greater than that of OfficeMax at this time.

Welcome to ebay OfficeMax

OfficeMax actually opened an ebay account on 4-28-11 as officemax_at_your_door changing to officeMax on 5-4.

One has to wonder why they've waited 2 plus years to actually begin listing items.

I have thoughts as to why this may be, far too technically involved to relate.

Feedback is at 17 now with a neg and a neut, that was fast.
