An End to Postal Deliveries at Your Customer's Front Door?

By: Ina Steiner

Just when you thought it couldn't get worse for small online sellers when it comes to shipping orders to their customers, along comes a congressman from California.

Many small businesses who sell online in lower volumes than their bigger counterparts find services from the U.S. Postal Service cheaper than other carriers. Sellers are continually worried about the impact of higher shipping costs on their ecommerce businesses. And they are already facing the possibility of an end to Saturday delivery.

Now Representative Darrell Issa would like to see the end of delivery at the door, a measure included in a new draft proposal he issued before formally introducing legislation. According to a synopsis, "The legislation will begin to standardize how mail is received around the nation by phasing out the expensive "to the door" delivery of mail, which only a quarter of addresses receive today, in favor of curbside and secure clusterbox delivery - the delivery modes more than 70 percent of the nation already receive."

Issa said the measure would save $4 billion or more annually.

While ecommerce giants such as Amazon, eBay and Google are considering ways to get packages into the hands of customers faster and with more convenience, Issa is looking at ways to scale back. His innovation? Allow the USPS to sell new services - such as fishing licenses.

Tuesday's Newsflash has the full story, let us know what you think of an end to "to the door" delivery.

''how is it that FedEx and UPS can deliver larger weight packages cheaper that the USPS''

Simple. There is a financial reason. The ''last mile'' of delivery is the most expensive. UPS and FedEx frequently dump this segment to the USPS, which serves every address in the country. It's cheaper for UPS/FedEx to pay the USPS than deliver the packages themselves. UPS/FedEx can cherry-pick the most profitable routes. By law, the USPS can not.

  Thanks for the insight.

@Ina
Should this law be clarified?  I think FEDEX/UPS are competitors and not US HOUSEHOLD.  Maybe USPS is bottom feeding and never have spirit to fight back competitions?

The Postal union isn't responsible for USPS's financial problems.

The Bush era Republican Congress is.

Maybe the right wing talk radio noise machine never mentioned this inconvenient fact.

Republicans required USPS to fund pension plans more than three generations into future -- completely unreasonable especially by the corporate standards.

The purpose of this provision was to deliberately put USPS out of business so that corporate vultures could swoop in and privatize its remains.

If this happens, then watch the Greed Masters drive prices up and service down.

Sound familiar?

Do away with pre-funding retirement! At this rate, that money will all be gone, anyway!

Do away with ALL Saturday delivery.

No cluster boxes. Don't change how mail is delivered.

I agree with others: Our Congress critters are a bunch of idiots!

Advertising on USPS vehicles?

Our carrier has been driving a vehicle leased from Enterprise rental for the past year or so.

Is that really less expensive than USPS owning their trucks?

As to selling non postal related products...

Why not have the Postal Service sell things that will contribute to postal volume such as greeting cards?

Surely having greeting cards for sale in post offices will contribute more to the bottom line than hunting and fishing licenses. Partner with Hallmark and place vending machines in post offices.

Even though stamp collecting is not that popular, the postal service should consider trying to resurrect the hobby by offering stamp collection supplies and partner with the manufacturers to offer supplies for sale.

Another possibility would be to allow companies to underwrite the cost of producing stamps by allowing them to place advertising on stamps.

While they are at it, the federal government could start a national lottery and only sell tickets at post offices. With tickets only available at the post offices, traffic would surely increase. Lottery profits could be dedicated to reducing the national debt and the postal service could receive commissions from ticket sales volume just as lottery agents do with state lotteries.

All of these items could be retailed from vending machines so as not to increase non postal related counter traffic.

@ Ming

Your speculation of "their provision was to deliberately put USPS out of business so that corporate vultures could swoop in and privatize its remains".

Is probably correct.

But Probably goes back further than GWB.
The world had a big transition before & after the 1st gulf war & The "pretend" fall of the USSR (1991).

My Hero President Reagan did a superb job out maneuvering & out spending the Russians on defense and Globalization of Our World Allies.

However the Russians played possum. When they pulled back defense spending & support of 3rd world countries they left a huge vacuum in the Middle East & Africa. I think they knew we would over spend trillions globalizing the world and would spend lives & Trillions more dealing with certain Religious Sects. The Russian have pulled a brilliant reversal powering down and waiting for the west to over inflate and then They power back up and dominate.

Global Socialist like Clinton then started the exportation of US jobs to fill the void left by the Soviets. After 20 years of this the world is fairly globalized. And most of the Communist nations are doing better at making money than the west are presently doing. Problem is keeping it all working together with out WW3,4 & 5.

Maybe they will like my idea to give USPS to Fedex cause they already planed it long ago.

I think both Parties need to be thrown out. The greed of man is no good. But for Socialism, if this is what we are going to be living under then what we have is a new NATION and no longer The United States of America. We will all end up subjects of something we hate and it will probably be "The One World Govt".

I only get 95% junk mail and 5% REAL mail. Can I pay USPS to shred my junkmail. Now there's a business proposition.

I have experienced  ALL the delivery alternatives mentioned.

For door to door, in some snowy areas if the snow is high or icy, you won't get your mail. The only time I have ever seen mail NOT get delivered is when we had door to door delivery. Once the Mail MAN did not come for 3 days!!! (yes we had cleared a path).  I could get to the post office but they could not deliver mail. So much for the ''Through Rain, through snow……'' old saying.

Otherwise, I've seen them drive the little trucksters through some pretty big snow for curbside delivery!

BIG  shout out to the USPS Mail-WOMEN! Several of our regular delivery people (in different states) have been women - & they are TROOPERS! Get the mail delivered correctly, reliable, deliver in the WORST snowstorms & ICE storms, friendly and act as if they give a carp about their job. Maybe I've been lucky but they really have ALL stood out!

Cluster boxes are only a pain if your package does not fit in the box & you have to go pick it up at the post office. Minor inconvenience when you consider some of the things life tosses at you.

Blaming only one letter of the political alphabet is to miss out on the other half of those that bear responsibility for the mess our country finds itself in. IMO an ''R'' is only a ''D'' with appendages. I just don't see much difference anymore when it comes to maintaining status quo in DC.

@ Ming for Merciless,

George Bush's fault, typical excuses.

2006 H.R. 6407 (109th): Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act

Votes: Dec 8, 2006: This bill passed in the House of Representatives by voice vote. A record of each representative’s position was not kept.

Dec 9, 2006: This bill passed in the Senate by Unanimous Consent. A record of each senator’s position was not kept.

Everyone was in and even the Postal Unions and Postal Chairman was on board.   And you say blame George Bush.  The bill was sponsored by a R and co-sponsored by 2-D (including Henry Waxman-CA) and 1 R.  Yes, President George Bush signed it but it was a completely bi-partisan vote and no one opposed it.

You talk of privitization, well it was Peter Orszag, he was President Obama's director of the Office of Management and Budget 2007-2008.  Orszag was previously the director of the Congressional Budget Office, from 2007 to 2008. He served in two different jobs in the Clinton administration, as a senior economist at the Council of Economic Advisors from 1995 to 1996 and, in 1997, as top adviser to the director of the National Economic Council.  He was calling for Congress to privatize the U.S. Postal Service in July 2012.

Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy were all on board.  And you blame Bush, how original. :)

@ Ebay's Slow Death

Thanks for the compliment. As for ebays slow death who knows what those squirrels are really doing.

I have several theories & speculations. It is really sad that one doing business with eBay has to rely on such guessing, rather than being able to rely on Trust & Accurate information & training for building & growing a business on ebay.

Ebay is instead a vampire grazing upon the sellers. I get fleas every time i think of ebafia.

I give my dog a pill so I know it's coming from eBay

I think it is somewhat likely that when full enforcement of the picture requirement halts the relisting of items below standard that millions of listings will end and many sellers will not bother to come back anytime soon.

EBays plan may be to clear the deck of millions of cluttered listings which will improve search results if that is their plan with a mid July relaunch of cassini then listing for remaining sellers may glow red hot in page views but the exposure will probably only go to their corporate seller accounts that have new products for sale.

Who knows, I am just wasting time till the end of July.

My real question though is why is Ming the Merciless so Merciless? Did ebay do something to you?

ebay pinks.  Please clear the air.  Do not distract.  Stop politics already.  Stick to actionable items.

Wickies are wrote by contributors  and cannot be fully trusted... unless it is scientific and could be proven by science.

USPS needs to stop shipping foreign parcel for FREE.  US sellers mail only account for 5% in last 6 months.  How could USPS charge too much to poor small American sellers to support million parcels a day from Asian countries. Likely, Billions parcels every month.

USPS, please give AMERICAN the statistics and LET THE AMERICAN PEOPLE decide who get FREE SHIPPING paid by AMERICAN TAXES!!!!

Why are US Senate and Congress ignoring this fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

USPS Unions, WAKE UP!  You want get paid well?  Go for the BIG BUCKS!  Don't sit and whine. Stop listening to P.Donahue. Don't fight US sellers.   Take action.  Boycott foreign parcels!

@map.
To my understanding, whenever a seller edited his item.  That item goes behind the list.  So it would take days or weeks before small American sellers problem recover.
My source was CSR from years ago.  So it is very unreliable source.
The CSR must have wished I hang up the phone so we won't be waiting on the phone for my item to appear for a week.
The Cassini problem was 6-months old.  We posted on Cassini/Houdini problems initially as early as December 2012... last year.
I think JD is wining and dining with Mega sellers in Asia.

He must be bragging on his accomplishment on crippling small American sellers businesses.

MAP, Clinton was a socialist?

We need another good socialist like Clinton in office.  He left our country with a HUGE surplus.  If that is socialism bring it on.

I do think my breakfast is gaining altitude after that "my hero Reagan" comment though.

Oh yes.

There was recently an interview in the last few years of Hillary where she comes straight forward and said she is a Socialist. I have to give her some respect because she said what she is. The new guy is so slippery like Donahoe. It's the words that they say, like "Create A level playing field", does that ring a bell?

My sales bell quit working after ebay adopted this policy in their literature.

@PowerSeller2007

I am bewildered at the idea that ebay is making big money with Asian sellers. 4-6 week delivery is terrible shipping and not the business model that ebay is expecting for US sellers to give to US customers.
Also the Chinese are search & browse manipulating item specifics by entering spam keywords in the 3 manufacture part number fields. This gives them mega page views in ebay search engine.

'D' or 'R', they're all just 'P's - Politicians - who care more about their own bank accounts and power base than anything else. As long as they profit, gain power, and stick it to the other guys, nothing else matters. That's why I refuse to be either one of them. I stand by my opinion on the unions, though. Unions are just another shade of Politician, looking to add to their power base and bank accounts.

Bloggo, you are correct. People in this country throw the word "socialist" around and don't seem to have a clue as to what it really means.

Their intent is to label a politician in a negative way because they don't like him/her.  It's the FOX news way.
